Hausa, Fulani and Kanuri form 67% of the current Niger. These three groups also form around the same percentage of Northern Nigeria. They are both Muslims as well. The sense of kinship between the Muslim Northerners and Nigeriens is very strong. I could bet that a Nigerian Fulani/Hausa would choose a Nigerien over a Yoruba/Igbo. You could see how passionate the Northerners have been in fighting against military intervention in Niger. Recall also, that Buhari as a military head of State supported a Nigerien over a Southern Nigerian for an international position.

It is interesting how the Northerners have stronger attachment to Niger than South Westerners to Benin Republic.
