Why did northern parts of western Cameroun opt to remain in Nigeria but the Southern Cameroun provinces opt to leave Nigeria?

71% in southern Cameroun voted to leave Nigeria while a similar ratio voted in the north to remain in Nigeria.

The reasons for wanting to stay or leave was as a result of the predicaments and treatments both provincial regions faced in their respective regions to either the northern Nigeria region or eastern Nigeria region.

Cameroun was once a German colony but following the end of WW1 and the treaty of Versailles, Germany was forced to pay war reparations to Britain and France.

German Cameroun was then split into two halves and shared between the British and French.

Britain took the western half and included it into their colonial estate , Nigeria while France took the eastern flank. This arrangement began from 1916 to 1959. The Southern Territories of western Cameroun were lumped with the eastern region of Nigeria while the northern provinces got lumped with northern Nigeria.

In the 50's, a movement sprung up by peoples of western Cameroun lumped into the old Ibo dominated eastern region, demanding they either be allowed to become a region of their own or returned back to Cameroun were they had been carved out from. There was no such movement in the mostly Muslim northern parts of western Cameroun.

Following series of petitions to the British and UN , a referendum was organised in 1959 and later postponed till 1961 on western Cameroun exit from Nigeria.

To the north , the Plebescite returned a result to remain in Nigeria under the northern administrative region. To the south, the result was an overwhelming "No" with over 70% wanting out of Nigeria.

Why were there such diverging opinions between the people of north and south Western Cameroun ?

Many an Ibo will lie boldly to your face and tell you that there exist imaginary cultural ties between them and people of western Cameroun.

This is of course all a big lie.

When you ask them where all that brotherly love was in the Plebescite of 1961, they will either lie again and tell you the UN conducted Plebescite was rigged or that western Cameroun parts in the then old eastern region were a victim of propaganda by both the British and northern Nigeria to leave the old eastern Nigeria.

The truth is that western Cameroun people trapped in the old eastern Nigeria were victims of oppressive and marginalising policies of neglect and disenfranchisement carried out by the majority Ibo populace on ethnic minorities trapped in the British drawn colonial borders of eastern Nigeria.

This was not only the plight of just the people of western Cameroun but that of every non Ibo tribes trapped in the British administrative region of the then old eastern Nigeria.

Under southern Nigeria protectorate, there was no clamour for a return to Cameroun as the British administered the whole protectorate through direct rule in a fair and equity manner.

The clamour to leave Nigeria began only when the southern region was split into two and semi autonomous direct rule was introduced by the British.

The minute the majority Ibo got power in 1953, agitations by not only western Cameroun but also other ethnic minorities in the eastern region to be free from the Ibo dominated east began.

So what we have here is evidence of Ibo arrogating and no apologies oppression and marginalisation of ethnic minorities trapped with them in the British created eastern region.

The then Eastern region was the only region that was so restive in terms of ethnic nationalities wanting to be free from it.

An obviously heavily sugar coated and blanket explanation is given by Wikipedia on why Western Cameroun people in the then Eastern Nigeria wanted out:

"In 1953, however, the Southern Cameroons representatives, unhappy with the domineering attitude of Nigerian politicians and lack of unity among the ethnic groups in the Eastern Region, declared a "benevolent neutrality" and withdrew from the assembly."

At the bolded, we can easily infer that "Nigerian Politicians" to mean Ibo Politicians.

We can also see how the situation of "ethnic squabbles and disunity" was a hallmark of the then Ibo dominated eastern region.

It wasn't only western Cameroun that were disatisfied with the state of affairs in the old Ibo dominated eastern Nigeria but also virtually every other non Ibo minority groups who had become totally disgusted with the Ibo domineering and oppressive attitude.

The Ibo will tell you that Enugu was the fastest growing city in the world back then but will convinently omit the fact that this came at a great cost to other provinces owing to diversion of all resources to build and construct a brand new capital city deep in the heartland of Ibo land.

In 1960, Azikiwe made the brazen decision to move the capital of eastern Nigeria from Calabar to a coal mining town of Enugu.

Port-Harcourt would have been a better choice as a capital city if Calabar was no longer viable but Azikiwe and his fellow cretins in Enugu arbitrarily moved the capital to a then small remote town deep in Ibo land .

Before there was any talk of northern domination of all spheres of Nigerian governance , it was all being practiced in the old eastern Nigeria with no apologies by the Ibos.

Before there was an Abuja that diverted resources from the south to the north, Ibos had already built their Enugu with the resources of other minorities.

Before there ever existed a nepotic and bigoted Buhari northern government, the Ibos were brazenly running a government exclusively beneficial to only their own people at the detriment of other nationalities trapped in the old eastern region.

The current Ibo position to revisit the old eastern Nigeria under the guise of a revamped Biafra movement is because, just like Ojukwu's Biafra that was formed because of Gowon creating states for the minorities out of the Ibo domineering old eastern region, the Ibo still sees the British handed down old eastern region as the pinnacle of their history where they ruled over their betters with impunity by abusing the democratic process.

Today, same Ibo are crying of marginalisation in Nigeria and complaining about northern hegemony despite them not contributing a damn thing to the national purse while still being the most active supporters of the parasitic leaching centrist system that depends on oil revenue from the SS regions.

The Ibo position today is that only them are supposed to leach on Niger Delta resources and that is why these descendants of slaves are still hell bent on restoring the old eastern Nigeria template be it either in the form of Biafra or return to the Ibo dominated eastern region hence why you will see Ibos being the only ones who reject and mock the SS geopolitical region.

The northern Cameroon region compromises of today's Adamawa, Taraba and parts of southern Borno states. My grandfather voted in the 1961 referendum to join Nigeria instead of Cameroon. This could be in part because of the historical ties our people's shared with the rest of Nigeria. I do not know however why the south chose to join the republic of Cameroon

For those who kerp saying that Zik removed referendum from the Nigerian constitution, I laugh

Nigeria had teo referendums, one in 1961 that allowed Northern British Cameroon to join present day Adamawa, and another that allowed Southern British Cameroon to join Republic of Cameroun. There was also referendum in 1963 to create the Midwest Region

But if you mention referendum to allow Igbos decide if they want to be part of Nigeria or not, some people will be ready to go to war

Sharap.

The Plebescite in Western Cameroun was conducted by the UN after western Cameroun petitioned both the British that their continued stay in Nigeria expired on independence day.

The underlying issue here is that western Cameroun provinces in the south wanted nothing to do with the old eastern Nigeria following their marginalisation.

A representative from western Cameroun bemoaned how he had to take a ferry boat ride to PH and connect by train to Enugu.

There were zero prescence of governance.

In places like Calabar, a lowly clerk position in the eastern adminstrative govt was reserved for Ibos .

The people of Calabar wondered why the Ibos had come to allocate every position in the civil service and local adminstration to themselves.

Even Ojukwu secured a job in a local govt in Calabar owing to high level nepotism practiced by Enugu .

Why did the regional Parliament in Enugu refuse to grant the so-called minorities a referendum to leave the Ibo dominated yeast?

Can you answer this ?

The Yoruba dominated house in Ibadan did not object to a referendum by the Midwest people to leave the old western region.

A Yoruba MP in Ibadan even raised the motion .

Another Yoruba man will later raise the motion at the federal house to ratify the final Plebescite results for the creation of Midwestern region .

Was that the case in Enugu under the Ibo dominated house ?

The reason advanced by Adaka Boro in his declaration to leave Nigeria was based on the Ibo coupists disrupting the upcoming federal house from convening after a Christmas break to decide on granting a referendum for the creation of COR region out of the old yeast that would have seen it shrunk to its current SE states.

Azikiwe warned Ibo parliamentarians in Enugu to do all they could to frustrate the minority agitation on the floor of the house.

When the minorities took their plight to the federal house in Lagos and secured the support of the north, western and Midwestern MPs, Azikiwe then activated his Zikists in the army to truncate our democracy and regional arrangement for an Igbotic centrist military dictatorship.

Zik warned the Ibo parliamentarians in Enugu that if the minority provinces left the east, the eastern province will become the poorest. The discovery of oil in commercial quantities in the lower Niger was what buoyed your foolish grandparents to commit the greatest abomination.

The greed and covetous nature of the Ibos coupled with their highly tribalistic and nepotic disposition to other non Ibos lumped with them in the old eastern region is what has been the problem and cause of Nigeria's problems .

Why did your useless grandparents object to the so-called minority demands for a Plebescite ?

Ojukwu who welcomed Ironsi's Unification decree 34 (the ogbengbe unity begging decree), was the same idiot that was crying to Gowon to reverse the creation of old Rivers and old Cross River states out if the old yeast.

When Gowon refused, Ojukwu then dragged the same Ibo weary minorities into his useless attaché by force Biafra.

What of Midwest invasion ? Why did Ojukwu decide to invade and occupy the then neutral Midwest territory ?

Why did Ojukwu refuse to agree to Gowon's Decree 8 that was meant to not only reverse Ironsi's useless central govt but also to strengthen regions by including for regional armies?

You people should stop fooling yourselves before the world with this your phantom victimhood and stupid attempt at recreating your useless parasitic Biafra Republic.

You probably dont know this but st the time, the creation of two more Regions were in the pipeline, the middle belt Region and the so called COR Region. However, anyone who knows Nigerian history also knows that 1964vand 1965 were tumultuous years in Nigeria. The election crisis of 1964, the census disaster of 1965, the locking up of Awolowo for treason, opration wetie and others. There was already fire on mountain before the military struck in early 1966. May be the COR and middle belt Regions would have been eventually created, but back then was not peace times

But what happened after? Gowon came in and balkanised the Eastern Region into three zones. Today, despite all the oil they claim to have, they are still not more developed than Igbos. The oil did them no good same as it did nobody in Nigeria any good, we are poverty capital of the world

You are writing all this because your grasp of Nigerian history is very poor. Decree 34 was nothing but a civil service matter, it did not abolish the 4 Regions Nigeria had nor deny the Regions resource control. Why would Ojukwu object to a decree that was just a civil service matter?

Gowon on the other hand signed an agreement with Ojukwu in Aburi Ghana. Part of the agreement was that Gowon would not balkanise anywhere in Nigeria during the period of military rule. But Gowon came back Nigeria, issued Decree 14 that abolished all 4 Regions and created 12 states, then immediately followed this up with Decree 15 that abolished resource control. That left Ojukwu no choice but to declare Biafra since a signed agreement had been violated

Those who think they got a bad deal in the Eastern Region were to get much worse in Gowons unitary Nigeria. They were given states, but their resources are still controlled in Abuja to this day

Those who talk about Ironsi's decree 34, a civil service matter, were the same oeople who clapped and cheered as Gowon abolished all 4 Regions, created 12 states, allocated half of them to his Northern Nigeria, abolished resource control and siezed all resources

Op is a clown. The western Cameroonians were already being called Cameroonians even when in colonial nigeria. That alone gave them a sense Cameroonian identity more than Nigerian. Hence, when referendum opportunity came Cameroon promised them autonomy, they quickly found excuses to join.

Secondly, The various regions adopted different attitudes towards the minority. In the East, the government invested heavily in infrastructure, industrialization and agriculture but leaving the people to fund their education basically. Families and communities mobilized funds to send people abroad for studies and taking up jobs upon return. With that, competition was encouraged among the people which ensured sustainable development with the rapidly rising gdp.
As a result, every one was given the opportunity to excel irrespective of ethnic status. This is why SE/SS has the most evenly spread development in the country today, with cities everywhere. The question is did they(minorities) take advantage of that opportunity? Even the government had to assist by granting scholarships. Yea. Adaka boro studied in UNN with Eastern region scholarship and even became the SUG president. No one had any plausible reason of leaving Eastern region except for freedom which we Igbos also believe in.

In the North, the attitude was entirely different. The minorities were almost being spoonfed. The bad news was that there wasn't any altruism behind this. It was purely strategic. The core Muslim north was incredibly backwards in education, development, employment etc Under the Northernization policy the more advanced northern minorities had more opportunities than those from other regions because of immediate lack of competition. But this was basically used by the Muslim north to lure them towards "one north" most northern professionals, judges, policemen and senior military officers were minorities. But this was for the time being. the Ultimate goal was to replace them with core Muslim Northernerners when they become qualified to hold such positions as has been proven today.

The northern style was not sustainable and genuine but Eastern minorities (including Cameroonians) who saw it obviously felt the deserved more. None actually had any plausible grouse against Eastern region government. The question is how are the Cameroonians faring now? In a war of real freedom. How are the Northerners decieving them faring now? The poorest people on earth! You can't cheat nature. Stop revising history.

Yoruba man wakes up in the morning and quickly starts to rant repeatedly about events that are causing it migraines and hallucinations. IGBOs are truly Formidable and that is the reason why useless Yoruba Agbado miscreants are fixated on their issues.

Yoruba man...go and look for food..being a poverty stricken leech shouldn't be anybody's problem. Spits

What is your ETHNICITY?
