A Strange Way I Landed A Job by Nobody: 5:09am On Aug 16, 2023
It was in 2005 and I was working working for this company in the Audit & Tax department in Lagos. I like the company no be small and me and my guy who i shall call Peter for the sake of this story, were colleagues in the same department.
In 2005, I had been with company for about four years.

My friend Peter was already anxious and looking for better opportunities outside and he started submitting his resume like Deeperlife crusade handbills upandan.

He had applied for this position in this oil and gas company in Lagos and was never called for an interview.
Luckily, he was offered a job as a manager in the Finance department at Lafarge in Oregun.

Me, I was not looking for any job as I was already pissed off with Nigeria and looking for ways to Japa. I had applications at the UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, and Denmark embassies.
Long story short, l was never looking for a job at the time.

One cool afternoon, I was sitting at my office and minding my own damn business na so the phone started ringing, I picked up the phone and asked who it was, the guy on the other end identified himself as a foreign recruiter and called to invite Peter for an interview in that oil and gas company he had applied.

I told the recruiter "Too late, Peter is now working at Lafarge and would not be interested in your job anymore"

I was about to drop the phone and go about my business when the recruiter said,

" What about you?, you are a Chartered Accountant yourself and work in the same office with Peter and we always like to hire people from your company"

Can you come for an interview the recruiter asked?

For what position, I shot back?

Oil and gas accountant, he replied, and can you come with your cv next week Tuesday.

I was taken aback since looking for a job did not cross my mind at the time and my focus was to get out of Nigeria which i eventually did in 2012 under the mismanagement of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Na so yours truly went for the interview, was offered the job, and resumed within one month.

That was one funny way I landed a good job in 2006 without even looking for a job. I worked there for more than five years before the japa spirit took over again and I later resigned and left the country in 2012.

Later on, I will write about how I missed an opportunity to get a job at the Central Bank.

Can you tell us your story of strange circumstances you landed a good job?

Leadership really matters.
How do the govt expect people and businesses to pay tax when there isn't economy activities now?!

Nigeria is in a more sorry state than you left her. Naira is 950 to a Dollar. Petrol is 615/litre. Cooking gas is 850/kg. Diesel is 850/litre. Bag of rice is 42 thousand naira per 50kg bag...Business are shuting down. Citizens are becoming poorer.

tongue OP, Goodluck Jonathan mismanagement was a better joke, compared to his successors, past and present that has almost grounded the economy and decended the country more into the abyss.

OP tell us about your japa trip and how you were able to cope then and now?!

Ps: did you ever inform Peter your friend & colleaque?

Was the pay for the new job more better than the one you were working for? And was it less stressful?

More than double.

But my previous job was way more interesting with lots of opportunities to make extra money. As an auditor, I had to travel all over Nigeria with allowances for flights, hotels, and other bonuses on a regular basis. I toured every single state in Nigeria with that job and it was fun.

Learn to dilute your lies. We're not kids here.

How did Goodluck Ebele Jonathan mismanaged the country in 2005?
Was he the president in 2005?

Government cannot eat their cake and still have it. The more hardship they create the worse for them to generate tax but of course Tinubu can do another buhari by start borrowing up and down. National house of assembly is in his pocket

negativity that comes with social media, you might not believe this, but in this present age and time, some people still avoid social media, some claimed social media is a waste of time while others say it is a threat to their security.

For Shanee Moret, her mobile phone, social media influence and her ability to think outside the box helped her secure her first job without the years of experience needed for the role.

She shared her story in a LinkedIn post. I hope her story will inspire you.

Her story below;

"I just graduated. I need a job. But I needed 2-3 years of work experience to get an entry-level job. It was so frustrating!

I didn't complain, I focused on what I had. Writing skills. A degree. A cellphone. And I knew who was hiring.

Here's what I did next...

I picked the company I wanted to work for. I did research. I called them. I told them I wanted to feature them in an article for the college.

They were open to it. We scheduled a time where I could interview the manager.

I dressed in a suit. I brought my resume and a notepad. I had a list of questions prepared.

I walked in 15 minutes early, shook her hand firmly, smiled and began the interview.

Throughout the interview, I asked questions about the company. The culture. Her vision.

I asked about student opportunity. Once the interview was over she asked if I had graduated and what my plans for work were.

"I'm currently looking."

I thought she wanted my resume so I reached in the folder and grabbed it to give to her.

But she stopped me.

"No need. You showed all the skills we are looking for. Can you start on Monday?"

That's how I got my first job.

You don't need permission to gain experience and you don't need a job to start building skills.

Think outside the box.

Can you tell us your story of a strange circumstances you landed a good job.

Some years ago, someone sent a CV to my email and copied a particular email address belonging to someone within a Multinational. Obviously, someone codedly asked him to send his CV to that email address but I don't know how he sent it to my email address.

So, I saw that my Ex was qualified and I simply forwarded her CV to that email address. Then, I picked the sender's phone from his CV and called the guy to tell him he sent his CV to the wrong email.

Later on, a reply was sent to that email that she should apply again on the HR portal, which she did.

My Ex got the job. Junior management role with madt benefits.

I pray never to have a friend like you. You are fully aware that your friend is ready to jump ship for a better offer, yet an opportunity came and you became the devil. This is why I advise people never to use friends and family, or former co-workers as references. They don't have your best interest at heart.

I did and we laughed over it. His new company already sent him to South Africa and Malaysia for training. Getting a job at Lafarge is a sure banker to making it in life and my friend has been a serious big boy for a long time now.

One year after, I was interviewed at Lafarge for a Financial Reporting position responsible for implementing the new Sarbanes-Oxley as the company is a multinational connected to Lafarge in France. I believe I passed that interview but was never called for the job. My mind keeps telling me my friend must have worked against me not getting the job but life goes on and I was not desperate at the time.

The job he got at Lafarge was bigger than the one I got at the Oil and Gas at the time.

Your emotion is getting the better of you. Calm down for a bit ok. Both of us were doing good with our current jobs at the time.

Wow!

But i don't think your friend did anything in stopping you from getting the job. Like i said earlier whatever that is destined to be yours will find it's way into your hands. And besides you moved higher too regardless

My mind told me he did. I knew about the interview content more than the interviewer and i was so sure i would be called for the job but then i may be wrong about him. He was at my wedding in 2007.

Yes, you're wrong since you don't kmow the actual stuff that happened. Over the years, i learnt not to conclude or judge anybody till i have good evidence to prove.

Anyway it's all in the past, and he's still your guy or has he ever shown any negativity towards you?

He is existing and doing very well. I am sincerely happy for him as we shared a lot in common. His kids are grown now he is very rich and a senior manager with the same company. I remember when he was invited for the Lafarge interview, he told me he was sure that would be his breakthrough job. He has more than 5 big houses now and doing very well with the same company.

Story for the gods. You should have at least informed your friend before stealing the offer. It was his decision to make, not yours. For the fact that you didn't consult your friend shows how evil you are. What goes around, comes around. Enjoy.
