The more States and Local governments created the more political looters that sent Nigeria from the richest Black country to abject poverty.

Nigeria is a good case to show that making more reckless money without discipline is a race to the bottom.

Yet, everyone wants more money!

It started when Gowon abolished the 4 Regions and created 12 states to replace the 4 Regions

He expanded on unitary federalism created by the previous Head of State

All depends how you see it. Nigeria had 4 Regions that were controlling their resources when Gowon came in early August 1966. Within months, Gowon had enacted Decree 14 that abolished the 4 Regions and created 12 new states. He immediately followed this up with decree 15 that abolished resource control and placed that responsibility in the hands of the federal government

Subsequent heads of state kept dividing the 12 States created by Gowon until we got the 36 states we currently have

But had Gowon left the 4 Regions to continue with their resource control, we may not have been where we are today

Divide and rule...

In fact some of those states have childish names that don't represent the history of the so called indigenes:

RIVERS... what the p.huck does that mean
DELTA...?
Plateu..... LOL
Cross River......

Unlike

Kano, Borno, Oyo, Katsina, et.c.

The areas that resisted well the British today have no identity except rivers and hills.

What about decree 34 that started the end of regionalism.

People talk about decree 34 because they have never read it. Decree 34 was a civil service matter

I copied below from Guardian newspaper;

In a speech to the nation on January 28 1966, he denounced the evils of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa regime and outlined necessary reforms. ”All Nigerians”, he declared,” want an end to regionalism. Tribal loyalties and activities which promote tribal consciousness and sectional interests must give way to the urgent task of national reconstruction. The Federal Military Government will preserve Nigeria as one strong nation.” He then went on to promise “administrative reforms” and referred specifically to several matters in which regional as well as personal interests were known to have had decisive influence. These were official appointments, public investments, and the universities. He promised that in the public services, efficiency and merit will be the criteria for advancement”. That industrial development would be “coordinated to avoid wasteful duplication of industrial projects”, and that the universities would be “re-orientated to serve the genuine interest of our people.”

Immediately after the speech two Governors kicked against the proposal. They were, Major General David Akpode Ejoor (83) from Ovu in the present Delta State, then serving as the Military Governor of the Mid-Western region and Major General Hassan Usman Katsina(1933-1995), who was then serving as Governor of the Northern region.

Lt. Col. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu (1933-2011), Military Governor of Eastern Region welcomed the decree while Lt. Col. Francis Adekunle Fajuyi (1926-1966), Military Governor of Western Region never commented on the promulgation of the decree.

Lt-Col Ejoor was reported as saying that the ’National Government’ set up by the army was the prelude to ‘the reintroduction of a unitary form of government’ and insisted that it would create future problems.

All that Nigerian govt did to undermine lgbos are the things destroying the country.

The first legislative passed the law, Nigeria became a Republic in 1963, even Tafawa Balewa & Co visited Yankee, hosted by JFK in 1963 to understand the system more, but unfortunately couldn’t implement it, due to tribalism, nepotism & what have you, the military came in, & did it by decree.

It was a necessary evil, because the major tribes of the regions, Hausa, Igbo & Yoruba were oppressing the minority tribes too much, ie, revenue from their resources, where going to Kaduna, Enugu & Ibadan.

You need the reading than I do. I think it's better if we avoid talking about the decrees before some animals see it as tonic for tribal bashing

First, what is your ethnicity?

Second, can u substantiate how Ironsi ,previous head of state created unitary federalism before Gowon expanded it. I want u to present specifics — not regurgitate talking points.

Thanks!

Western Region was the richest in the country. They spent Cocoa money prudently.

All Africans in the Western Region including the Mid-westerners benefited.

Igbo should not start what they cannot finish in their favor. From the first Coup, Ironsi Unitary Government to the foolish war; they end up denying everything.

They never learn.

Educate us what Ironsi did specifically to turn Nigerian into unitary system. All the regions, not just WR, spent their “cocoa” wisely and prudently.
