I used a lawyer actually sir. I am trying to assess my options and be more knowledgeable before reaching out to him.
Legalaffairs:
This is a gross oversight. I am certain you did not consult a Lawyer to do a due diligence before you make this purchase. Hope you have checked the Land Use Charge too.

I made a terrible oversight of not checking electricity bills before purchasing a house. It just completely escaped my mind till after purchase.

I just found out there's electricity debts of 500k unpaid to IBEDC.

How do I handle this?

Does the house have a prepaid meter installed ?

If yes ... U have to take the meter and card number to their zonal.office and find out what u have to be paying monthly ....

It is possible they have not recharged and it could pile up..

If there is no prepaid meter get one installed and spread the payments for 4 years ..

Note: don't see any marketer or branch manager ..them go chop ur money Sara..

They transfer them same way soldiers get transferred so if they execute illegal stuffs for u most likely they won't be found again .

I know it will be difficult getting such a negligent
previous owner to pay such bills. sad

When people fail to do due diligence, this is the result.

I am sure if you had hired a proper consultant, they'd have spotted this and you'd not have faced this.

But as you want to cut corners na., see where it landed you.

Just go to nepa office in your area, inform them. They will reduce the bull.

Your previous debt is not your problem. Sue IBEDC before they shortchange you!

You try to cut corners these are things your lawyer should have ironed out.

Since e don happen go disconnect anything electricity from the house

Register for change of ownership and ask for a new number you go still spend for lawyer las las.

Carry all the doc go nepa office for new meter if them no agree then go green.

Solar is cheaper in the long haul but you've to manage it effectively.

Simple...

The debt is attached to the prepaid meter, it's not your fault that a house you just bought has so much electricity debt, meaning, the IBEDC weren't properly doing their job. So here's what You're going to do.

Request that You want to buy an entirely new meter box. It shouldn't be more than 100k for the purchase and installation.

Don't pay any 500k debt that isn't Your fault in any way.
Thanks boss.

You tried, I'm also planing on getting solar panels, your landord na guy man grin

He's a real guy man. I laughed at his boldness. He said "At least let me ask in case". That difficult period was needed sha. Cos I spent a lot of money to setup the inverter and all. But Omo, the savings it is giving me cannot be measured. With this petrol deregulation, and previous scarcities, I have not felt them at all! I get round the clock electricity (obviously with reduced consumption when on inverter). But just the thought I don't have to worry about petrol for generator again, well worth it. I encourage anyone who can afford it to go ahead to get it. The improvement on one's quality of life is immediately noticeable. My madam being a very picky person, pressed my neck to get one inverter exclusively dedicated to her fridge and freezer. I was very furious at that demand then but went ahead to do it. Now, I dey tell am "thank you" everyday for insisting on that. My fridge and freezer have not gone off in 24 months

I also made a similar oversight but had my way around it.
I did total renovation of the building which took several months and IBEDC had already disconnected before i purchased the old building.
When the renovation was at the finishing stage, i went to the nearest office to apply for a new meter and discarded the old meter (had 151k Naira debt ).
As far as they are concerned the building is a new house and luckily the marketer covering that area was transferred, so i had no issues atall.
Re: N500K Electricity Bill Debt On Newly Purchased House. by Rapture123(m): 4:13pm On Aug 23, 2023
The problem was that you told them the house already has an existing Nepa account and it was through the registered accounr name and address they were able to know the bill. You could have told them the house is a new one (since old things have passed away when you purchased the house and became new house owner) and that you have not created an account in the house before (Since it you have no idea when the former owner did that). So you need a new account, which you will open with your name and passport. If possible, repaint the house.

I had similar experience in the past but scaled through.

How much was the total cost to get yours?

Oga, your own is even a bit fair because you own the house, the house I rented had over 400k bill which If I get a prepaid meter they will be deducting from my monthly recharge till I clear the entire bill and bad part is I won't even take the prepaid meter when going after paying like 50k to get it, that's why I'm still on estimated billing paying only current charges, at least till I pack out of the house.

Go to their office and apply for prepaid meter then beg them to reduce the previous bill to like half that you don't want to settle it with court case with them or if they would prefer court case, you will spend the money there.....

I won't pay for what I didn't use and I wont buy meter for another person

Why can't you take the prepaid meter with you when packing out?
Re: N500K Electricity Bill Debt On Newly Purchased House. by gratefulheart(m): 4:23pm On Aug 23, 2023
1. Have a conversation with the owner first about your finding and them him he need to sort it out and see how it comes out.
2. Of it doesn't work and meeting the manager you should probably meet in the middle.

Just above ₦900k in November 2021. This included the 6 panels, Solar Charge controller and 100m of UV cable to connect to the panels to the solar charge controller and a new 1.5kva inverter for the fridge and freezer (I previously had a 2kva inverter for the house). The real major expense is the battery. I had batteries from before, but had had to change them one year after the solar panels. Spent around one milli to buy 6 top quality new batteries in December 2022. Expensive? Yes. But I'm not going to be worrying about batteries for at least 5 years so definitely worth it

It is registered to the address and owner of the house, even the bill I pay is in his name, NEPA refused to change it

Hmmmmm, just talk to the owner of the house regarding the debts, light and water are the two things one must not ignore when renting a flat.

You didn't do your due diligence before making payment.... you have already bought the assets and liabilities of the property, so carry your cross!!!
