Why is it that a currency ($) that Nigeria doesn't own nor print keeps having such an insane influence on our local economy??

Because for the sixty-something years of independence, we have not been able to transform our economy into a production-based system. Even in sectors where we produce, production equipment is sourced from abroad. Also, we employ expatriates to guide in the operations of such equipment. We have not built capacity in our people, and we have not built a sustainable system that ensures that the daily needs of our countrymen do not require importation.

Even the toothpick you use is imported from China. An Average Nigerian stands up with expensive clothing (be it native or corporate), the shoe is imported, the shirts or atiku material, or Ankara imported, the belt is imported, the wrist watch imported, the glasses are imported, the perfume is imported, the only thing local maybe who sowed the clothing.

So it's a long chain of dependence on imports. To move away, it has to be a conscious and deliberate effort from the government and the people. It will take more than 15 years to structurally reverse this order with biting sacrifices on the part of the people. Some of the structural reversal initiatives include the revamp of technical education in Nigeria, the revival of Ajaokuta Steel, the review of the engineering curriculum to make it a more practical and deliberate investment in critical engineering and technical manufacturing (particularly the manufacturing of machines, chips, batteries, electric equipment, etc). These are the foundations of manufacturing. So that any manufacturing enterprise can go to a university to design the engineering side of things, and take it to machinery factories to produce the machines required for manufacturing. It is a long way to go... I am not sure we have those visionary leaders, who will not look at only immediate gains but long-term structural reversal of import dependency.

Because you have dumbass unpatriotic leaders who don't fight for the best interests of Nigeria. They prefer subsidizing foreign refineries at the expense of our local jobs. They loot the Forex earnings from awa oyel money, take their kids to the west, and give jobs to their cronies. That's why Asians will be mocking us.

Because world trade is done in that currency. And of course, we can't forget the fact that our government is printing ours with reckless abandon and creating an even greater surge for dollar demand without increased dollar inflow. Before you complain, the only reason we don't have enough is we spend more of it than we earn. We import too much and export too little. China has literal trillions in dollars because of it's exports.

You didn't miss your economics class. I was watching one documentary and saw how China was adding value to some of the things we overlook.

Bamboo was coverted to a beautiful product. You see how they work seriously in industries and you know that this country will go far.

Their children even build toys that you buy for your own children. Creativity runs in their DNA but here colos is being celebrated.

Did I even mention we spend more time watching BBN, season films and Tiktok.

Do you think planes carry full passengers?

Have you heard of hijackers taking up seats for themselves to resell?

Say what you know please, do you think 400+passengers fly to lagos on a daily in a one way trip?

Even international flights will not take up full passengers, they go to their country to join passengers and still not get filled up

If you are a flier or frequent traveler, you go understand...

Let's stop this I too know

If you are a business person, you will understand the economy is not smiling

That was how one was saying shits about business people increasing prices, what they don't know, they want to talk about it instead of asking questions... dollar no dey stable, rmb no dey stable, leave people in that position or with knowledge of it to Express themselves

If you are into importation, you will know what they faced, if you are into road transportation, you will have an idea of their plight, if you are a salary earner, you will know what employees face(a self employed man won't know what employees go through) everyone with his or her own...

That was how the above commenter they bash people in business and he or she has no single idea about Business... ask me about airlines and I will tell you some secrets which the airlines are battling because I have some knowledge of it,if e pass me,I give you the one I know, you go meet the next person to add up

Thank you

On good days when politicians are having functions in Abuja.. those airlines carry full load and make cool money. On other days, their aircraft get filled up more than half of total seats..

If you want me to write a 10 page document on business and the challenges in all the sectors in Nigeria, I would do it, with ease sef.

If and when you interact with foreign CEOs and MDs of businesses operating in Nigeria.. then you'd realize that Nigerians operating businesses in Nigeria are part of the problem affecting the system.

The aviation industry is somehow protected to favour Nigerians running airlines unlike some other like oil and gas.. most of the complains you hear are FX exposure, double-digit loans and whatnot but I tell you that Nigeria is still far better for business owners today judging from global economic trends. There is the free movement of persons and goods within Africa called AfCFTA they are pushing for to connect businesses and investors across Africa. How will they justify their unreasonable air fares then?

Watch the banking sector closely and you'll see the big progress they are making.. banks like GTB, UBA and some others have entered the International scene and are fast expanding to many countries but the ones in aviation are giving reasons to choke Nigerians and think we should all keep quiet and accept it.

APC put us in this mess.

Worst was they insulted PDP but they have zero solution to Nigeria problems.
Even security they can't solve it.

I could travel to anywhere in Nigeria during Jonathan era. Buhari brought his useless self and cursed Jonathan for being a slowpoke. I had a thriving business during Jonathan era.

Once Buhari entered, the raw materials shot up and even fuel price has increased by more than 4 times. Yet they expect us to be understanding.

Fu ck APC!

It's greed of the black man... The airline operators won't disclose the exact amount of money they make with just one trip carrying hundreds of passangers.. not to talk of the multiple trips per day and amount they make on weekly and monthly basis.
They have formed cabals in the aviation industry to be milking Nigerians just like other sectors.

One bus will carry 18 - 22 people max at 35k for 10 - 14 hours journey but plane will lift as much as 400+ passangers at once for airbus for a 1hr 15mins trip.
They are telling us rubbish just to jistify their own 419 activities.

Comments like this are just about enough to make anyone understand that most APC supporters are largely ignorant fellows.

Leadership is tough! What sustains a country is how enterprising their leaders are. Today, every serious country is looking for means to diversify their economy and make more money for their people.

For decades now, Nigérian government has been depending only on oil and gas to feed a population of over 200 million. You cannot have that number of people in one geographic location and depend on one revenue stream to sustain them. You can never be rich. That's why Buhari was singing diversification before he was elected but later found out that he lacked the capacity to do it because he lacks ideas.

You see, rich countries with massive population like America and China always have multiple streams of income. American and Chinese companies are practically everywhere generating money for their governments, not just oil and gas. As a result, their GDP runs in trillions of dollars. Nigeria is just over $300 billion or so.

You don't have to agree with me. Facts are facts. If you want to know a rich country, check their budgets. What the federal government budgets is same as that of one state in America. In fact, the budget of Maryland ($60 billion) is bigger than Nigeria's federal budget of less than $50 billion. Guess what, Nigérian leaders only steal from available money which is earmarked for funding a budget that is not up to $50 billion. That's why Peter Obi is crying that we don't meet our OPEC quota for crude oil sales.

In summary, a man who has multiple streams of income is often richer than a man who depends on one. Again, we need smart leaders to start harnessing Nigeria's untapped potential. If you like, keep arguing. If you like, learn. It's entirely up to you.

I understand your points... when I said abundant resources... I'm not just talking about crude oil...

We have Golds, lithium in high deposits...we also have
Coal
Iron ore.
Gemstone
Diamond.... this are naturally resources we should be exporting for production or rather setup an idustrial companies to refine them... but it's unfortunate people fly into the country to mine them illegally with the support of this same leaders...

If all this are all monitored and the cash income are deposited back into our economy... I can tell you... Nigeria will be a 1st world country...

UAE resources ain't up to Nigeria atall... but they managed the little they have to create a perfect country

This is one area of Buhari's disastrous rule people are not even talking about.
I remember very well that, inspite of the BH threat then, one could comfortably travel, even to the North for business.
I always mention that during gej's time,I remember entering a northern state by 11:45pm and still found a car taxi at the park that took one to final destination a good one hour away,on a long stretch of lonely, tarred highway.
Had no fear of the driver doing one harm or of anything bad happening on the road.
You have to cut my arm and 2 legs for one to try that same trip during Buhari's time.
Will always say it,apart from the unparalled harm he did to this country over his 8 years and the unparalled disaster he was, Buhari's mismanagement of Nigeria in all sectors should still not be forgiven, even in the afterlife!

Simple: Nigeria is import dependent and $ is the currency for international trade. It is more so in Asia where every part on a plane, including routine service, is sourced abroad and paid in $.

Solution? local production

That man is right o. Everything about products and services is operated and maintained in dollars and with the exchange rate. So they really not having any good time.

On what the government can do, is to either adopt dollars as the official national currency such that incomes revenues, expenditures both micro and macro is in dollars, to keep up such that the disparity is reduced to the barest minimum, that way, Yankee don get extended family be that and Nigeria will no longer be a sovereign nation even tho independent. Another option is rule out transactions in dollars completely such that even crude which is the major revenue vehicle for the country is sold in naira and not dollars. Also make naira the defactor means of exchange for any goods, products or services. So what ever is been purchase or manufactured is sold or bought with the local currency. For example, that uranium that the west need for their nuclear plant is mined and sold in naira just as crude as well..

Frankly, airline is relatively cheap. No justification for charging less than 60k for a 1 hour trip while God is Good Motors charge around 30k for a journey of over 10 hours with high risk (robbery, kidnapping). In fact, airline only increased their fees recently. It's always been a 10-15k difference between airline and road trips (totally not worth it). Airline operators have been fair.

Did you read what you just typed?

Just an Hour Flight is 60k with no guarantee of risk free or survival assurance in case of disaste and you said it's very fair.
Meanwhile God is God will run for a whole 10 to 12 hours for less than half that amount

The flight might has over 100 passengers on board wile GOD IS GOOD just 14

One hour flight shouldn't worth more than 40/50k

As at when I used to pay Flight tickets from Lagos to Uyo for 15k
God is God was about 5k same destination

That's 10k difference

What's happening now

So why exactly is flight far more expensive in Nigeria

I honestly can't get it honestly

Scale and operating costs my dear citizen.
20 dollar budget flights with an airline that probably has well over a hundred aircraft fully booked.

Who doesn't know that in a large economy margins can be safely reduced.

Secondly, when it is time to wash and put lipstick on the aircraft the bathroom is just down the hall while my dear brothers will be heading to Zone 4 to look for dollar to do medical tourism on the aircraft.

As in every thing business in Nigeria, scale due to a poor economy and cost due to poor administration is the root cause of inflation.
