The problem is, we are stuck with English, because choosing an indigenous language is fraught with the same issues as English.

Let's assume we choose Hausa as our national lingo. It's spoken by millions of Nigerians, and not just Hausas. There would be complaints from other tribes, INCLUDING IN AREAS..where hausa is widely used, that the idea would be dropped.

So for now we are stuck with English, at least until we get something like an instantaneous translator technology, then each and every tribe would be able to learn and write in their own lingo, and use the instantaneous translator to understand others. Google translate is a small step towards that direction.
