Femmy, I may not know the shippers as at this moment, cos the whole thing hasn't been initiated yet. The best I think you can do for me is if possible give a list of Shippers that could be reasonably cheap and wouldn't put me in any dire state. People being asked to pay millions clearing a container which content is their personal belongings like furnitures that they have being using abroad, but are shipping it to nigeria because they are relocating back to nigeria should b very careful of those they re talking to, because such containers re duty free. U will need to pay other charges, but no duty. Seek information from d nigerian custom service, instead of online faceless people. |

Buc: [b] You are right about the duty waiver that exist on shipped personal effects but i need to add that an importer or returnee need to show prove of how long he/she has spent outside the shore of Nigeria to justify the volume of personal effects brought in.The process of duly asserting this could span weeks and this doesn't affect demurage/rent payments which would have piled up(Don't forget that our terminals has been concession to private companies with a sole aim of making BIG money) Secondly,the no definite meaning of what personal effects is means customs could easily and have very easily classified a box of sanitary pads as been in commercial quantity and as such dutiable.Meaning an importer definition of waiver eligible shipment is a dutiable shipment to a custom valuation officer. I am presently working on a container clearance for a client(That i met online)that shipped in 3 cars and personal effects and we already have Terminal and agency charge to the tune of N245k already aside duties payable. femmy2010: I personally recommend against shipping your car or container via Grimaldi. While it is true that they are cheaper and easier to clear in Lagos, it is sometimes difficult to get on their vessels here in the US. As you may know, they are always solidly booked. If you do not want your car to be parked at the Port for a month or more waiting in line, try another shipping company. The extra money you spend on clearing will be worth the timely arrival of your car. P.S: The difficulty in getting on Grimaldi has been a well known issue. If they have made any recent improvements that somebody is aware of, please let us know. 1 Like |

BizBooks: I would rather have my vehicle delayed for 2weeks in the USA and have it delivered as shipped than shipped early abode another shipping line and delivered without a brain box or shipped personal effects stolen(Not to say other shipping line are not good). I cleared a 2011 Camry from PTML(grimaldi) about a month ago for less than N1.2m and recently had to use about N1.5m to clear same Camry from 5star logistics managed terminal(Not Grimaldi) .That additional N300k is enough to do some other important doings by an importer(My view though) Frankly,the wait is very much worth it on Grimaldi line,except of-course if there exist no other choice but to accept the available shipping line. I do not work for Grimaldi nor am i related to the Grimaldi group but my clients need to be pointed in the right direction and this i would never cease to do. If the delay is just 2 weeks, I would not mind. But I have heard it can run into months. To get the facts, we need to hear from people that shipped with Grimaldi recently. They can tell us exactly how long it took them. femmy2010: How much will you take to clear a 2003 4Runner? It will be in Lagos in about a month but will not be on Grimaldi. I need a reliable quote. I have experienced a delay with Grimaldi before, it was a month and was not funny at all . , promised never to used them again, but i gave them another trial with my recently arrived Ford Edge, that was only delayed for 2 weeks. What i have noticed was that, your agent must have your interest at heart and you have to be on their case for them to know that you are not another african dude that they could just make your machine wait for everyone else. their efficiency in Nigeria though is great and i will surely try them again . . . . I just got a price quote from my clearing agent for a 2010 4Runner, the difference in price to clear such ride is 500K Naira between Grimaldi and the other . . . Now that is whole lot, but i always give the options to my clients, so they are aware. |

BizBooks: I have bought 3 vehicles at different times in Ny in the past 4 months and never took more than 3 weeks after it was taken to my shipper (9http://www.2findlocal.com/best-4-shipping-inc-queens-ny-384780.html) for it to be loaded aboard a grimaldi vessel and an even more recent one (https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=782862.msg9369028#msg9369028) which i was told would be loaded next week(making about 3 weeks after i paid for it,USA customs clearance period included). Maybe i was just lucky though and sure do hope my lucky streak continues. So from the point of view of an importer and a clearing agent i do stick with Grimladi any-day.
