I saw this list from someone who posted and it dated back to 39 years ago.

Since then, I have been reminiscing on the standard of living then and wondering if we can ever go back to such time again or will things keep getting harder?

I remember then we weren't called the best nation in Africa in terms of economy but the standard of living then compared to now was far sweeter even though Nigerians still complained back then.

What do you think about this?

You all often rush to comment just to be the first commenter, without even reading before commenting. This is not good.

There was never a time when things were easy. Back then how much was the salary of the average worker.
You see even in America they most time reference what the amount of some cash years ago is worth today even though it is same dollar. How major problem is not producing enough food, not producing manufacturing equipment and over dependent on importation.

So because the prices appear in coins, that automatically translated to good economy?
Did you ask yourself or tried finding out what the minimum wage was at that time?

Fela released “Suffering and Smiling” in the late 70s (c 1978), more than 5years before this list was written and you still feel Nigeria was good in 1984.

Isn’t 1984 the same year Buhari/Idiagbon were the military dictators when everyone was agonising about the state of the nation and the economy?

If I hear! Now the poverty index is clear for all to see again. The Nigerian state after 63 years of miserable and directionless steering of the ship of state have repeatedly proven the Igbos to be the right people. Nigeria is one uniquely cursed man-made hellhole of suffering and a cesspool of unending corruption.

Same everywhere in the world. Value of money also changes with time. $1,000 39 years ago in 1984 has more value than $1,000 this year (2023).

Only difference is that inflation is slower in developed countries. They try to peg it around 2-3% per year.

Babangida destroyed the value of naira with his structural adjustment programme.

This is the only reply which looks reasonable to me and which I seek.

Facts stated with explanation added and the "Why" of the facts.

I know the riches now was more better and circulating now than then. But i am also talking about the part of job vacancies, corruption, hardship and few others.

The corruption then cannot be compared to now even though the leaders then was also corrupt.
There were job available more then than now even in normal handiwork and hustling.

I remember then we could easily see daily jobs everyday to do and keep body and soul together.
Sometimes me and my friends even do 2 different jobs on 2 different sites in one day, i also helped myself in school with that then but what about now?

What do you think about this?

This thing has been overflogged, year in,year out in this same nairaland but some of you have simply refused to use your commonsense.
What was the minimum wage 39 years ago and what is it now.Was minimum wage 39 years ago,₦21k?Of course no!!
The way to apply common, cheap, free,God given sense to every living human being is this:find out what the minimum wage in Nigeria that year was and calculate the percentage of that used to buy those items,to buy cement,to buy a car,to rent a house etc.
You will find the difference is not much.
Things were also tough then, maybe not as tough as now,but it wasn't as easy as this your kindergarten post is trying to make it look.
For God's sake, don't look at the prices per se,look at the purchasing power against the average wage during the periods to have an objective assessment.
Or are u expecting bread that was ₦1 thirty nine years ago to still be ₦1 today!!!?

I think most Nigerians don’t understand economics

You brought 1984 price and you started saying can Nigeria be like that. Do you think price stays static in all countries for that long?

Do you know how much cars are being sold then? How much do people earn to be called rich? If it’s that easy, don’t you think everyone in that era should have been a millionaire since everything is cheap?

No one is saying there is no inflation currently. But even during those times, people still scream inflation at that price you had there.

It was still expensive at that time but what I know for sure that my parents always bought a bag of rice when rice is finished. We were just an average family. Compare it to now and check how many people can afford a bag of rice

How much was minimum wage then?

When cars sold for NGN100,000 or less only 3 teachers had vehicles in the whole my secondary school - the principal, vp admin and one teacher. The VP and teacher rode volkswagen beetle. I have forgotten the principal's car but it was a regular one maybe a 504.

What was the take home pay for this person at the time? Definitely not today’s salary rate.

The person who wrote that list did so for economic reasons. That was a time when a senior civil servant earned no more than N800 a month . I was very much alive in that year
