Many Nigerians do not realise that that scene in Scarface, where Al Pacino, starring as Tony Montana, welcomed his would be assassins with a salvo from his sub-machine gun, is likely stolen, without accreditation, from the true story of how Samuel Ladoke Akintola met his death.

Akintola was the bravest politician of the First Republic. While other politicians killed on the night of January 15, 1966 by Majors Ifeajuna, Nzeogwu, Anuforo, Onwuatuegwu, and Okafor begged for their lives, with some even crying, not so Akintola.

He had been warned by a telephone call from Mrs. Adunni Fani-Kayode, that Captain Nwobosi had arrested her husband, the father of
@RealFFK
. But rather than flee, he waited for what he must have known was coming. And he was prepared.

When Captain Emmanuel Nwobosi ordered him to come out, he waited for him and his men to approach his door and opened fire on them with his SMG. It was actually Captain Emmanuel Nwobosi and his men who ran for cover.

This continued until Akintola ran out of ammunition, whereupon, seizing the opportunity. Nwobosi and his men came out of hiding and wasted him. But for the fact that he ran out of ammunition, he may not have died.

Captain Nwobosi would have been able to deny his part in the killing, as Major Ifeajuna did, but for the fact Chief Akintola's neighbour, Justice Kayode Eso, was home and witnessed the events.

Additionally, before he and his fellow putschist could kill Chief Remilekun Fani-Kayode, they were counter attacked by forces led by Lt. Colonel Gowon, who rescued him, and he lived to tell what he witnessed.

Ironically, Chief Akintola was the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba, and his defiance of the military was later re-enacted by Chief MKO Abiola, his successor as Aare Ona Kakanfo.

WHAT HAPPENED TO NWOBOSI?

Dear
@eleyiofx,

Thank you for your feedback. Well, after the July 29, 1966 counter-coup, this same Captain Emmanuel Nwobosi, who killed Samuel Akintola after initially running away when Akintola resisted with his sub machine gun, ran to Enugu, where Lt. Colonel Ojukwu made him his Chief of Staff. If Akintola's ammunition had not finished, Nwobosi could not have killed him, because from the report of both Justice Kayode Eso, and Remi Fani-Kayode, he ran to hide when Akintola started shooting to defend himself. Can you imagine a military man hiding from a civilian?

After Lt. Colonel Ojukwu declared the Republic of Biafra on May 30, 1967, he promoted himself to General and made Emmanuel Nwobosi a full Biafran Colonel.

Captain Emmanuel Nwobosi was the last of the January 15, 1966 conspirators to die. He did an interview shortly before he died in 2020, blaming the whole coup on the British for not conducting free and fair elections in Northern Nigeria, which allowed Ahmadu Bello to emerge as regional premier. He sounded exactly like Nnamdi Kanu in that interview, which is still on YouTube. He showed no remorse nor took any responsibility for his actions.

If not that he was overpowered by then Lt Colonel Gowon, he would also have killed Chief Remi Fani Kayode, FFK's father. Lt. Colonel Gowon, as a dedicated Christian, did not kill Nwobosi the way Nwobosi killed others.

But going back to his 2020 interview, first and foremost, what was Nwobosi's business with the Northern Region? Secondly, none of the parties won the 1959 federal elections. The only reason that the Northern Peoples Congress came into power and Sir Tafawa-Balewa became Prime Minister was because Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe of the NCNC went into a coalition with the NPC rather than with Chief Awolowo's Action Group, which had made overtures to him. Yet, the putschists did not kill any NCNC politician. The issue is that Nwobosi felt that Nigerians do not study history, and to a large extent, he was right.

For example, Ifeajuna, the coup leader, who passed the home of the obnoxiously corrupt Ozumba Mbadiwe (who had been exposed by the Daily Times's Babatunde Jose as having received kickbacks from the sale of government property), only to proceed to the home of the famously honest and frugal Prime Minister, Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa, whom he abducted and later killed, in a coup that was ostensibly about corruption.

In my opinion, Nwobosi got off lightly. But such is life.

Thanks again, and may God bless you.

Capt Nwobosi had a Problem

He left Gen Ironsi in Lagos
He left Col Hiliary Njoku in Lagos
He left Mbadiwe in Lagos
He left Dr Orizu the Senate President and Acting President in Lagos

He now travelled from Lagos all the way to Ibadan in the middle of the night just to kill Akintola in Ibadan

He had more than enough people he needed to get rid of with him in Lagos

This is a desperate Case of Acute Tribalism

Igbo will never be forgiven in Nigeria especially northerners imagine someone you abducted for good turn around and later killed you just to please his kinsmen.

Our cowardly blodas descendants of cowardly soldiers would be saying yorubas are cowards. Akintola stood his ground and fought till death. Abiola stood his ground and died fighting. Tunde Idiagbon the same. Igboho challenged the government to their face. Ojukwu ran away in the face of fire. Their savour Nnamdi Kanu was bundled like a goat.

They, after making themselves endangered species in Nigeria are telling us wrong history.

Pigdiots.
