yes you may be right that religion has caused Africa damage but not Christianity. Jesus Christ criticized the pharisees and saducees in his days that practiced religion. Christianity isnt religion but a relationship with God through Jesus Christ and a way of life. Christianity was formed from the word Christian which means Christ like. If majority of Africans were Christ like, you'll agree with me that Africa would be a better place. If people adhered to Christ's instructions and pattern their lives after him, the world would be a sweet and safe place.
As for prayers not working, that's your own experience and i cannot argue the reality of your experience with you but for others that have gotten results through prayers, you cannot tell them otherwise because it's the reality of their experience aswell.
Where in the bible did you find God throwing monies from heaven to people? But in the bible, you can find principles to be wealthy.

Before Jesus commissioned the movement in the first century people throughout the world believe in GOD but their opinion differs so the young man from Nazareth admonished his own disciples to go and visit people in their homes to introduce oneness in thought regarding GOD, if the householder agrees with Jesus' disciples that means both the disciples and such householder has become worshipers of the same God but if not then each person will have to call on the God that soothes their liken.
So Christianity wasn't established the way most people think today, you don't just wake up and think you must join a religion rather Christ's disciples will first preach to you, you have to decide if their message makes sense for them to continue teaching you what their founder commanded before you can dedicate your life to their God.
It's idol worshipers that used to wake up and decide which god they will worship without someone preaching to them or teaching them the standards of the god in question!
