I just learnt now that a dowry is a token paid by the bride to the grooms family (in India) meanwhile I had always thought dowry is paid by the groom to the brides family.

Now what is paid by a groom to the brides family is not dowry but bride price.
Abeg, how many of you knew this? And All along we've been made to believe dowry is paid on a bride.

Here in Nigeria, things are always the opposite.

Dictionary meaning was not existing when our forefathers started collecting bride price/dowry for thier daughters.

I remember being taught the difference in primary school and also that in the olden days England, the bride's family paid dowry to the groom.

Lol... ours really didn't have a name.... Each culture has what it's been called...
Normally, according to almost all Nigerian tradition, it's just a small "Token" given to the girl's parents to say thank you for all your efforts in her upbringing to this stage..
But some bride's family takes this "Token issue" so far that it's no more a "Small token" again...

At least they taught you but why are our fathers and the society at large always referring to dowry as money paid to the bride and people like you who were taught never spoke up until now? 🤔. Borrow means to take in something.

its not a lie but using the wrong, though the main meaning is focused on money/gifts paid during/toward marriage

For example, nigerians you say Hiss when you refering to that sound one makes when "pissed of" lips are pressed against, the actual term is "Kissing Your Teeth"
