Mmmh, SMH at this thread. Respect is an individual thing & it goes beyond what culture expects from pple. Culturally Yorubas are expected to prostrate & all what not to their elders & some do so even when they are not inclined to do so naturally. Respect flows from deep within irrespective of whether ur culture demands you to prostrate or not to elders.

Like someone said, I have come to realise that most outward gesture of respect from Yorubas doesn't go skin deep cos they have very strong tendencies of being double edged or 2faced, smile with u this meeting only to turn back & give multiple stabs.

That being said, I cant really credit any tribe for being most respectful. It is an indIvidual thing which comes from the heart & not just for doing sake.

@ Supereagles, that ur junior calls you by your name doesn't mean there won't be respect from him/her. Some tribe/people can't be bothered by whether you call them sister or brother provided u know the bounds. It has to do with family upbringing cos I have seen Igbo families who are into sister/brother name calling just like Yoruba Egbon. Respect goes deeper than paying lip service, you know,

The most respectful tribes are those who greet their elders with a Jackie-Chan kick in the morning and salute their mates in the night with a republican slap. Vote us. Vote us. Vote us. Vote us.

It is clearly Igbos. A Yoruba boy that greets you will stop doing so the moment you stop giving him small egunje grin grin

I stayed free off any payment with a family in their a house in Benin-city with benefits of free breakfast or dinner in 1998 because the patron of the house impression of Yorubas as being respectful not based only on greeting but attitudinally and the patrons observations on the way I naturally treat his children and reinforce and at the same time instil some values of respect for their seniors into them not imposing my culture anyway. So Ipso facto loquito.
Though some will be quick to rubbish that saying what the Yorubas does is eye service, well I will it gpes beyond the greeting if theyt don't understand and aside from genuflecting or kneeling down, the attitude that goes with it is the KOKO. so you may genuflect, a discerning Yoruba will decipher if you are really showing threal respect regard or faking it. Thus the saying, idobale kii se iwa ( genuflecting does not connote a proper attitude.) we got a whole lot more beyond the dobale thing,
In real Yoruba , u must regard and respect even when the person is some seconds older than you ( taiye is always elderly to kehinde) and you don't tell some older than you he is lying even if he is you'll say it like that's not the way it is rther say you are a lier or you are lying . Will give yo more. in Yoruba, you don't sit on a the sam esit a woman or girl just left unless you are the Husband or tone of the brothers, doing so means you are disrespecting the father / husband as the case may be. Yo don't give or collect anything from any one older than you with the left hand.
A wife in the family does not call any child in the family by name but by an alias .

I didn’t want to tell this story but don’t have choice. During my NYSC camp that was first time I experienced the ways of yourbas far away in northern part of nigeria. We elected platoon leader. He from yourba and assistant is ibo. This guy always speak yourba to all, we have other tribe. We have benin, hausa, ibo, etc. we didnt participate in dancing competition because he wanted yourbas dance. he made wrong decision because he didnt carry everybody along (other tribe). second week in camp we had to dethrone him and plant another guy from another tribe. shekina
i quite understand that but you cant judge all with just 1 person's foolishness. you will quite agree with me that all tribe got their black sheeps. but if we are to do a research and generate statistics, u'll discover that a larger percentage of yoruba are quite very respecting and hospitable to those that are deserving cuz they dont take shit from anyone

No elder in Nigeria deserve respect. They're all failure, and the reason why nigeria is sure a failed state.
