The bodies of 1,500 Hamas militants have been found on Israeli territory, a spokesperson for the IDF has said - as a source tells Sky News the Israeli offensive into Gaza "won't be clean".

Some thoughts now from our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall on what further Israeli attacks on Gaza could mean for the civilian population.

"When Israel wants and does take military action in Gaza, it will go after Hamas or Islamic Jihad, but such is the fabric density of Gaza that it is absolutely inevitable that civilians will be caught up in it," he said.

"An IDF source told me this morning - and these were his exact words - 'it is not going to be clean'."

"When you factor in as well, a complete shutdown of any fuel, water, electricity, food going in [to Gaza], it could get very, very nasty indeed," he said.

He then said that some major Hamas leaders were not even in Gaza, pointing to Ismail Haniyeh, who is currently in Qatar, as one of many challenges facing any Israeli offensive.

"Any military, whether it's as powerful as the Israelis, the Americans, the British, or whoever, trying to wipe out an ideology in a group [like Hamas] is virtually impossible."

Hamas attack was a perfect opportunity but history has shown that no one can forever suppress others for personal / selfish interests.
