I am currently working as an accountant in an oil company based in Nigeria. I have been with this company for three years but initially started as a contract worker for two years before being promoted to the position of assistant supervisor last year.

In my department, we were three accountants sharing the same office, but we had no manager. Instead, we had an assistant manager, an account officer, and myself. With hard work and dedication, I managed to become the best among us. However, earlier this year, the management decided to restructure the department. As a result, they removed my superiors and employed someone at my level and a manager.

Now, my boss is learning the job from me, and the newly employed lady is also at the same level as I am. However, my boss claims that I cannot be promoted because I am not superior to the newly employed lady. The issue is that both my boss and the new lady are learning the job from me, and I believe that I deserve to be promoted since I am already good at the job.

I have talked to my boss several times about this issue, and he still refuses to promote me, stating that there is no superior among us(myself and the new lady). Please, what can I do in this situation?

What qualifications do you have above her?

Are you already a certified accountant?

Lol.

If you like, listen to random advice from unemployed nairalanders telling you to resign. That is when the economic reality of this country is going to hit you like a tornado.

You're working in a company where you're being remunerated appropriately and your biggest concern is promotion in a job you've had for less than 5years?

Your ambition is bordering on the precipice of greed.

Your boss sees you as a threat since you are the one training them. He is afraid you may soon want his position. So he is more comfortable with the lady since she doesn't know so much yet.
I think you need to find a way to manage your boss and make him relaxed instead of feeling threatened.
It appears you feel you should be the manager instead of your boss and that is the signal you are sending to the guy.

its either you look for another job or you live with the situation as is. If you are as good as you say, your ability should speak for you in due time. Also promotion is often political in organisations and not just based on ability. these things happen and you will not be the first. you got 1 promotion in 3 years and thats not too shabby. knuckle down and keep doing your work, otherwise look for another job.

leave the company for another which values your effort.

if you continue with the hope of getting promoted it may never come or you may be replaced once your boss gets what he wants with the two new employee( the man and the lady learning from you)

Is like u have not realised u are working for someone, hence u are replaceable anytime.

Start thinking of your own as early as possible. A time will come when they won't be able to afford u.

Start thinking of establishing something for yourself.

Start it as soon as possible.

Start now when u are still in their good books.

What if those two are the ones to replace u.

What if,what if and what if.

My dear just calm down and let God take control of situation. If your boss prefer the other 2 people over you there's absolutely nothing you can do about it than to resign. But never approach your boss again for promotion so as not to show that you are desperate. Mind you, you started as a contract staff so tread softly.

Start looking for another job.

unless you get a new boss, you are unlikely to advance in that company

Be satisfied with what you have and strive harder to get better. I'm sure you won't be thinking this way if the status quo didn't change. You were just promoted last year and you are already feeling pained because you think you are better than your colleagues.

You are not indispensable! If you don't want to work as a team, you may find yourself in the labor market.

Thank God for where He's taken you so far

Op,

1. You only told us about the lady's qualification which I'm even tempted to say that you've only guessed because you may not be privy to see her CV. What is your own qualification?

2. Do you know if the lady has other professional qualification like ICAN? And, do you also has?

3. Regarding comparing your 3 years working experience to hers, do you know how many years of working experience the lady has before joining your company?

4. You're only taking her through your accounting processes and not that you're teaching her the job. You need to get this fact right. It is normal for Accountant to struggle with their functions on their new job so stop thinking over-the-board.

5. My advise to you is that you should set your ego aside and learn to have a good working relationship with the lady in question. With time, things will work out for you naturally in the company.

Cheers!

PS: I am a Chartered Accountant with 16 years working experience in various sector of the economy.

sorry about your current plight. but for the sake of security of your job, do your work diligently, whatever the new collleagues want to learn from you be open to teach them, and also, your discussion with them should be work related and not related to anything personal or outside of the job. and also don't talk down on the lapses of the company or your boss to them. don't involve in gossip with them. and most importantly be looking for job else where from now hence fort and should be private to you only. so you can get the job that your current qualiification and experience carries.
