Recently, A Nigerian street hop sensation mohbad was reported dead after controversial investigation which revealed he was injected with at least one medication before slumping

However, this case came into the limelight because of the social status and exposure the victim had. But many unreported cases do happen around the country.

These incidents usually occur during medical emergencies at a clinic or A&E at a medical facility. And sometimes when a health worker is invited home to attend to a medical emergency.

I'm writing this so this to sensitize the public on proper procedure your healthcare providers should take when administering certain intravenous or intramuscular injections in an emergency.

Hydralazine for hypertensive crisis

Years ago we met a woman at the A&E a known hypertensive with a BP of 155/110.
And the inexperienced medical personnel panicked. She was placed on immediate bedrest and family members were given a prescription of hydralazine injection to buy.

Few minutes later, they returned with the medication and the drug was drawn into syringe.
The personnel administering the hydralazine gave all the drug in the blink of an eye...rapid bolus !

Now everyone was panicking as we kept taking her blood pressure which was going down rapidly...too rapidly !

Finally after 30 minutes her bp settled at 125/87.
And then , I had to warn the new inexperienced personnel that even though we were trying to prevent a (haemorrhagic) stroke with the hydralazine, A rapid injection Could crash her BP causing her to have another (Ischaemic) stroke.


So many medications can Inadvertently cause death when given rapidly without proper knowledge of the medication or inadequate skill or even inexperience)panic on the part of the health worker.
