Bamboo don't rot except there is a vacuum and if you look closely, those are selected bamboo, not the fat ones but thing, those are the type we use to pluck fruit with the help of harvester. They are usually stunted bamboo that is old but not fat so they have more stensil strength but of course not as iron. I'll carry out a mini project using this style, I see no structural defect and I repeat, it takes a structural engineer to understand the science behind this |

Great thread. I have learnt a lot. What I can say from my own use of locally available bamboo as a stake for horticulture is...it degrades over time once it is placed in a moist medium like soil. It simply rots away, although the bamboo I used did not have any kind of chemical treatment to prevent this. But the bigger question of whether bamboo can support heavy concrete loads at upper levels still remains -some posters are very clear that this is a no no. My question is this: having gone through a thread like this, how can we accept lawyers (or any other non-engineers) with no civil engineering experience as ministers of works & housing in this country? Questions like those raised on this thread WILL come up in the course of the minister's duties. So he becomes a mere spectator or a pawn in the hands of ministry staff when the technical issues come up? Which then leads to the next question...has an engineer ever been appointed minister of justice in this country? If not, why? |

Jewessgratitud3: If it's an all wood bungalow, with no concrete, then there would've been nothing to worry about. Concrete would definitely weigh heavy on the woods, causing the building to collapse eventually. |

SLIDEwaxie: So you depend on google for all these trash you and your mates are vomiting here?? You are all confused. What do you understand by ‘tensile strength’? Do you know what that means or you just crammed something but have no clue what you crammed. Go and google the meaning of reinforcement bar(building rods) What sizes of reinforcement bars are used for columns and beam of a building? Have you ever built a house before? What sort of house? Have you ever been to a construction site? Compare the tensile strength of bamboo and 8mm or 10mm reinforcement bar. Do that and come back…. By the way…bamboo tensile strength varies depending on location and area it grows. Bamboo in some swamp in Lagos will have different tensile strength to one found in some forest in Ondo. Do you agree? Tensile strength…maximum load a material like bamboo or rods will carry before they give way and break. Compare the tensile strengths and come back. Btw bamboos have tensile strengths of 50-150MPa |

Bamboo's greatest weakness is its poor durability in its natural state. The material attracts insects and fungus, which cause decay, and untreated bamboo structures don't last more than a few years. |
Re: Danger! Anambra Man Builds Two-storey Building With Bamboo, Says Iron Expensive by Jewessgratitud3: 6:57pm On Oct 20, 2023 |
mariahAngel: He must have done his calculations well before employing this method. So he probably knows how to balance out everything at the end for durability. Person wey start journey don know where him dey go. Research The average compressive strength of bamboo is about 14,000 pounds per square inch (psi). Compare that to the compressive strength of concrete, which is about 2,500 psi, and you can see that bamboo is indeed a very strong material. |

For all of you bamboo engineers here. Here are photos of reinforcement bars otherwise called building rods in Nigeria markets. Apart from other great qualities which they possess due to how they have been treated and produced, they have ribs…do you all understand the function of those spiral ribs? 1 Like

StJasper: Na my idea? By the way, see what research says and this goes to show you that the man has carried out his research before experimenting with it. Jewessgratitud3: Ogbeni be calming down, this kind of careless statement is what makes unapproved processes looks valid. Have you carried out test on bamboo to get the limits it can be used and the required mixture of concrete that goes with it? Where's the data to support such claim's? |

Jewessgratitud3: Another ignorant take been peddled as fact, the hubris on this thread is outstanding. You've stated this crap like 3 times and its nonsense. Why are u comparing the strength of bamboo to concrete?Do u even know what concrete is? Is the bamboo replacing concrete? Isn't the bamboo part of reinforced concrete just as the steel rebar is? Why not compare both rebars instead of comparing one of the rebars to concrete without rebar or is the bamboo something else? The irony of "Do Your Research", go educate urself man and thrash this opinion. |

KosiGee:During the olden days, they built one storey with bamboo, palm tree plank, palm kernel shell and and clay soil. We had one we use as tourist site cos the children of the owner relocated and built cement House. That house was still standing strong until they razed it down. I think the grandchildren don't wanna be associated with it as people use that to describe them. |
Re: Danger! Anambra Man Builds Two-storey Building With Bamboo, Says Iron Expensive by Yusufisraelj(m): 7:22pm On Oct 20, 2023 |
Jewessgratitud3: This where you're mixing things up, concrete is not the problem here but iron. The reason iron rods is used in buildings is to aid support for concrete, it acts as the skeleton in your body that's what ensures buildings don't come crashing down. My challenge is that he's replacing those iron rods without proper verifications on the ratio of concrete to bamboo that will give the required strength for the building to last. |
