One faithful night I was on a long traffic 4 lane road. Any time i'm in traffic I always put the gear on pack and hand brake.

A long truck was on my left side and that line or lane seems to be moving slowly more than the one I'm in, as the truck was heading forward the car if front of me also moves. It look like My car was rolling backward, oh boy if you see panic I begin to pass break hard and even with hand brake car was still rolling I quickly put the gear on drive with my leg on break for where next I off the car. All this within seconds.

One thing that still baffle me was that I didn't hit the car behind me. I can't really explain that phenomena.

I went online to Google it and couldn't stop laughing. It was an illusion.

I think everyone has experienced this illusion at some time.

I know I have been idly day dreaming and waiting for the lights to change, and suddenly stabbed on the brakes because I though I was rolling backwards.

Our eyes see motion based on comparing it to another object. If you are inside a flying aircraft for example, you have no idea you are moving unless you look out the window at the ground.

When you thought your car was moving backwards, it is likely that you were not concentrating fully, your peripheral vision was not focused on anything, so all you saw was the adjacent car. So your brain has no way of knowing if it is your car or the adjacent car that is moving.

If it ever happens again, just move your focus to a background object and you will immediately see that it is the adjacent car that is moving. The illusion is broken.

One way to cope with this is to look sideways through your side window.
