Many churches in the body of Christ today are cold and formal having no entropy in the things of the spirit. They evade the very idea and down play the supernatural. They boast and glory in their doctrine and speak less of Biblical truths and teachings. It is no wonder that Paul in his letter to the church at Colosse, warned: “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ” (Colossians 2:.
I remember attending a church, it was on Pentecost Sunday, and the presider took three texts from the Bible. The first was from the Old Testament, the Second was from the book of Acts chapter 2, the third was from the gospel. Now these three texts from the Old through the New testaments were pointing to what the apostles experienced on the day of Pentecost, the mighty move of the Spirit; and the effects and power of the Spirit in the church.
That preacher explored on the subject of his text in the Old Testament and the gospel. But did not explore on the text from Acts chapter 2, which speaks largely on the pragmatic inauguration of the move of the Spirit upon the church. Sitting in my seat, I wondered why that preacher did not say a word about the Holy Spirit descending upon the disciples of Christ, and they spoke in tongues and preached the word of God with great boldness.
You see, this was a Pentecost Sunday, which everyone expects the preacher to preach or teach about the Holy Ghost, but that day, there was no much emphasis about the Holy Ghost. This made me wonder and I asked myself, doesn’t that preacher believe in the things of the Spirit? Why didn’t he speak on the gifts of Spirit, particularly tongues and its interpretation thereof? As I began to ask myself these questions, I saw that that church has little or no manifestations of the Spirit. In that church, I saw the sick, the lame, the deaf, the dumb, some sick of the palsy, confused, religious, and unlearned in the things of the spirit. I felt pity for the members of that congregation that my spirit man wept.
Friend, God wants the church to desire and covet spiritual gifts: the vocal gifts, which include the gift of prophecy, the gift of divers kinds of tongues and interpretation of tongues. The revelation gifts, which include the gift of the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, and discerning of spirits. The power gifts, which include the gifts of healings, working of miracles, the gift of special faith.
1 Corinthians 12:31
31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
1 Corinthians 14:1;12;39
1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
12 Even so ye (the church), forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye (the church) may excel to the edifying of the church.
39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
The above scriptural references imply that the church must covet and desire spiritual gifts for the edification of the body. In the book of Acts, the Bible teaches how the disciples covet and desire the manifestations of the Spirit.
Acts 4:23-33
23. And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.
24. And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
25. Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
26. The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
27. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
28. For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.
29. And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
30. By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
31. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
Ephesians 1:17-23
17. That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him
18. The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints
19. And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power
20. which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places
21. Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come
22. And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church
23. Which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.
First, in the book of Acts, the disciples prayed for boldness to speak the word. This we’ll categorize as praying for vocal gifts, which include prophecy, divers kinds of tongues, interpretation of tongues. Second, the disciples prayed for healing, signs and wonders. This we’ll categorize as praying power gifts, which include working of miracles, gifts of healing, special faith. Third, in Paul’s epistles to the church at Ephesus, he prayed that God would grant unto them the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him; the eyes of their understanding being enlightened. This we’ll categorize as praying for revelation gifts, which include word of wisdom, word of knowledge, discerning of spirits.
The corporate anointing in the church will become increasingly manifest when the church, in unity and in faith, covet and desire by praying these prayers in the books of Acts chapter four and Ephesians chapter one:
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, would grant unto the church, that with all boldness they may speak the word. And that healing, miracles, signs and wonders may be wrought in the name of Jesus Christ. And that He would grant unto the church the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, that the eyes of our understanding being enlightened to know the exceeding greatness of His power in us.
By praying those prayers, the church would be praying for the manifestations of the nine gifts of the Spirit. The Bible teaches that when the disciples prayed those prayers the place where they were assembled shook.
We rejoice when we see people in the church fall under the anointing, but wait 'till you see the church building shake. The stones and rocks will lift up their heads and rejoice under the power of God. At one time the Pharisees asked the Lord Jesus to tell his disciples, while they were praising God, to be quiet. But Jesus said unto them, "... I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out."
The corporate anointing in the body of Christ, the church, is able to make stones cry out!
