Why do students keep failing exams conducted by exam bodies such as WAEC,NECO & JAMB? The performance has been

poor lately and what do you think is the cause of this mass failure? Is it the fault of the students, teachers or

parents? Pls kindly share your experiences.

Students keep failing, especially English Language. It's really a serious problem for the education sector in Nigeria. I think students should read more and stop wasting away their time on frivolities such as video games, films and so on.
Re: Causes Of Mass-Failure In Public Examinations In Nigeria -By Tayo Demola by TayoDemola(m): 2:36am On Oct 27, 2011
Students are no longer dedicated to their studies. Some teachers are also not dedicated to teaching. But students should be more dedicated and take it more serious because it's their future. If you fail, you're the one to bear the brunt, not your teacher.
Re: Causes Of Mass-Failure In Public Examinations In Nigeria -By Tayo Demola by TayoDemola(m): 12:03am On Aug 18, 2012
Every year when WAEC or NECO results are released, it's always poor performance. It's always one case of mass failure or the other.

Could it be that all these people who fail actually failed these subjects or is there anything funny going on in these examination bodies? Can we say the exam scripts are properly marked or is there any form of compromise going on?

Some students have complained of poor grading by exam bodies such as WAEC and NECO and even JAMB. The issue of mass failure in public examinations is worrisome to everyone but this can be tackled if we know the cause of the problem. We all know that these students are the leaders of tomorrow and if their future is jeopardized, this will ultimately affect the future generation.

Could it be that the syllabuses are too voluminous for students to cover or is it that they don't know how to answer exam questions?

bestads: Dear Nigerians, the reasons for mass failure of our teenagers in public exams are not far fetched.
1 FACEBOOK,YAHOO,TWITTER,MYSPACE and generally browsing on
the internet instead of reading their books
2 ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE and EUROPEAN FOOTBALL LEAGUES,
it is easy for an average nigerian teenager to know the tha names of all
chelsea players but same youths cannot tell you the square root 25 in mathematic. Worse still is that these days instead of seeing inscriptions
like UNIVERISTY or SCHOLARS on the exercise books, what you see are
pictures of paloma,Drogba,Beyonce,Omotola etc
3 DSTV,Home video and african movie magic, watching television and
films endlessly.European champions league,English
premiership,Barca,Blues,Chelsea,MANU etc 4 GSM and BLACKBERRY, the average nigerian teenager uses the latest
and expensive gsm phones just to show off that they belong, when they are
actually nothing.
5 GSM TEXT LANGUAGE, I will not be suprised to see students write
words like ur(for YOUR), 2moro( For tomorrow) in their EXAM sheets
6 QUEST FOR CHEAP FAME AND WEALTH, The goverment, electronic media(tv and radio) and companies have not been helpful at all.The
average nigerian youth especially the girls want to BE silver Birds most
beautiful Girl and get cheap money and fame(Nobody has remembered all
the previous miss world, but we still remember MOTHER THERESA),they
want to win IDOLS WEST AFRICA, they want to be in NOLLYWOOD, they
want to be TWO-FACE,they want to win maltina street dance ,they want to win starquest and GULDER ULTIMATE SEARCH

8 EVER BUSY PARENTS, Parents are always in search for money, business and jobs, they live home 5am and come back 10pm

There are only two things I can allude to this dilema.LAZINESS AND UNSERIOUSNESS.In my days in secondary school,we do massive midnight/weekend reading while preparing for exams. But what do you see today?Students and parents alike looking for expo.Facebook, internet dating, movies, music, careless living are the order of the day.Private schools are not helping matters also. They are the ones buying expo from waec officials to give to their students to boost their image as great schools. That is why we have many graduates who pass through the universities but they can't defend their certificates. Our leaders also have made things worse. Many youth now believe hardwork is a curse. You don't need to study hard to become relevant in the society.Just press some buttons and get connected that is all.Our leaders are the worst models to inpire youth educationally.God save Nigeria.

The mass failure may not be unrelated to the diminishing value of education and hard work given that our societal values are more focused on money, irrespective of how you get it. There is not much room for meritocracy in the workplace, most people are more focused on connections.
Moreover, it is easier to get a fake, bogus certificate and become a politician to RECEIVE the big bucks while your fellow citizens look on and seek the face of God to come to their rescue - fix their schools, health centres, roads, electricity, tap water, police security services etc.

The truth of the matter is that students no longer read. It is very surprising how a student can mention the names of players in Europe and their coaches as well as how much these people earn but do not know the name of Nigeria's Senate President.

Just visit any newspaper stand in the morning and you will discover that 90% of the people around there are either discussing football or reading sports papers. Again, instead of tapping the benefits of technological advancement through e-learning, Students are busy chating on facebook, 2go, netlog etc. Many students have access to internet but hardly google any academic work other than chating.

It is also very rare to see a student using his/her personal money to buy textbooks except the ones bought by his/her parents. But students bet over N5000 during football matches.
Teachers on the other hand need to change their pattern of teaching as technology changes every day. Many teachers still use old methods of teaching, which are not at par with current realities. So things are changing everyday and teachers must as a matter of fact change their teaching techniques.

For instance, after giving a test to Physics class at Preston University by Prof. Eistern, a graduate assistant who was supervising the exam asked Prof. Eistern "Prof. was this not the same exam you gave to this class last year?" Prof. nodded and said "yes it was the same exam". The graduate assistant summoned up courage and asked Prof. Eistern "How can you give the same questions to the students in a row" He replied " Their answers have changed"

Therefore, answers are really changing everyday and Nigerian teachers should not rely on their old method of teaching so as to achieve meaningful result.

In conclusion, students don't read again. Not only students, but Africans don't read except when they are writing exams.

Quite the main factors responsible for the cause of the aforementioned problem, especially the issue of distractions-social networking, sports on TV, etc.

Can you give us a concrete statistics of the period before now so that we can compare favourably? It is necessary to know what obtains before the period under review.

8 EVER BUSY PARENTS, Parents are always in search for money, business and jobs, they live home 5am and come back 10pm
leaving their children to the care of house helps and teachers in private
schools. THEY have forgotten that out of the 24 hours in a day their
children will only spend 8am-2pm(6 hrs) in school and in hands of the
teachers the remaining 18hrs is spent in the home(wether sleep or not)
.these same ever busy parents can not look into the books of their teenagers, they don't monitor waht the teenagers watch nor who they

ogbeche77: I think bestads did justice to this topic earlier this year... Here is the detailed post
bestads: Dear Nigerians, the reasons for mass failure of our teenagers in public exams are not far fetched.
Warning is that wealth gotten by vanity shall DIMINISH.
7 The new craze of TALENT SHOWS: Suddenly The only talents our
youths now have are music, dancing, acting and stand up comedies, they
no longer have talents for maths, physics and entrepreneurism.
Check out the list:MTN PROJECT FAME,BIG BROTHER,STARQUEST,MALTINA DANCE
HALL,AMBO,GUILDER,IDOLS WEST AFRICA,PEAK TALENT HUNT
ETC…What a bad distraction
It is only COWBELL that sponsors national mathematics competition and

mesmerizing , spellbinding ...u've said it all . Academics /education is not duly rewarded again thats why everybody wants to sing, dance, even without the talents.. The mainstay of economic growth which is education is in a state of comatose ..why would they strive 4 excellence when we celebrate mediocrity?

One of the major reason is the english premier league matches are on from august to may the following year. What time is left to study for students. May God help us in nigeria.
