Adidas opens its first West African flagship in Lagos

Nigerian vernacular architecture meets Adidas’s long design history at the brand’s new Lagos flagship, designed by Oshinowo Studio.

Located in the city’s Victoria Island, the store is wrapped in the kinds of aluminium sheets often used in Makoko – a floating settlement on the coast of Lagos. A mix of solid and perforated, these panels are lit by strips of neon lights.

The facade brings new life to the existing concrete building that lies beneath, with Oshinowo Studio focusing on retrofitting rather than starting anew. According to the practice, it reflects Lago’s rich culture of ‘upcycling, reuse and regeneration’.

In addition to its new look, the studio extended the building and installed a solar power system and wastewater treatment plant. Rounding out the retail space is a basketball half-court painted by Nigerian artist Osa Okunkpolor.

‘Our design is inspired by the city’s resilient, adaptable, and go-getter resolve, building a place of convergence for sports and culture,’ says founder Tosin Oshinowo.

Lol, Tinubu urchins are busy celebrating rubbish. Go and ask about previous brands that opened shop in Nigeria and why they left soon after.

I can tell you that it's a matter of time before this one closes too and relocate to more serious countries.

Opening a shop is nothing to be proud about.

The highest they can employ is 5 attendants and 1 store manager.

We praise mediocrity in this country

That's because Lagos is the most popular state in Nigeria, and it is the state with the biggest market and richest Nigerians. Original Addisas wears aren't cheap. If it wasn't in Lagos, it would only be in Abuja or Port Harcourt; those are the places the richest Nigerians live.

Hungry man indomie noodles #850.

Give people 5 cedis and they'll thank you like they've won a jackpot.
Prostitution is a big business, pimps everywhere scouting for patronage.
Ghana is bleeped, same in Togo and Republic du Benin.
Whoever wants to relocate to Ghana should make it snappy.
I love Nigeria, God bless Nigeria.

You actually think they need all Nigerian masses to patronise them, when the few upper-class of the over 20m Lagos population is enough?

Or you think their specific location in Lagos is not strategic? Or the other partner stores for Adidas and Nike in Ikeja City Mall and The Palms Lekki have shut down all these years?

How many of the struggling immigrants in UK can afford to spend £70 on a shoe?
