Some Japa because of peace of mind, is not about money money for everybody. I knew someone who abandoned his business and relocated abroad after he was kidnapped and paid heavily before he was released.

You are so on point. As long as you are earning very well here in Nigeria, there is no need relocating abroad. At best, you could go for vacations and come back.

Yesooo, but if you are managing, Japa is the answer

This japa syndrome is evident of poor management of the economy.

It portends doom for Nigeria.

Yes,
Abandon NIgeria, and just run to any country with white people.

I noticed a thread on"10 sets of People Who Shouldn't Travel To The UK". I found it interesting and decided to create my own version. I am an immigration lawyer who just came back from an IBA (International Bar Association) Conference. As a member of the immigration committee, we discuss immigration issues. Immigration is as old as time and inevitable. I don't have issues with Nigerians emigrating for "greener pastures" after all, I did the same thing as a teenager thanks to my folks and encourage many others to do so. What I do have a problem with are the categories of people emigrating abroad to start all over. The list is as follows:

1. Big earners/those who are at the top of their career: It doesn't make sense for someone who earns millions a month to abandon that in the name of JAPA. The chances that you will earn the equivalent to what you are earning in Nigeria is slim. You have to start all over again as no country is going to hire you over their own nationals.

2. People approaching 50 and above. I was insulted some time ago whenI stated that if you must Japa abroad, you should do it when you are young. While there are quite a few over 40s who have been able to re-establish themselves, there many more who have struggled to get back on their feet. The job market is a young person's market.

3. Politicians. These category of people make too much money to desire to move to another country. The system in Nigeria was designed to cater to their very whelms.

4. Small scale/large scale business men. If you have a thriving business, it doesn't make sense abandoning your business just to start over in another country. Don't get me wrong, there are many countries are looking for business men to invest in their economy. In the UK, they fall under the category of investor visas.

If you are a Senior Lawyer, Bank Manager, Senior Surgeon, Senior Chartered Accountant, you are most likely at the peak of your profession in Nigeria and very likely earning a decent amount of money that places you in the elite. It makes no sense for these category of people to emigrate and start all over again.

There you have it. Everybody else has the right to leave the country as it's not working but it doesn't make sense for the above-mentioned class of people to JAPA abroad (at least, outside Africa) as they have a lot to lose.

So in summary, all the successful Nigerians should stay in Nigeria and losers/never-do-wells should japa? This actually sounds like a good idea to me, as this way, we can get rid of the surplus of idi0ts that this shithole has.

It's not today that Nigerians started japa-ing.
Since 70's 80's they've been doing it.
There used to be an advert on NTA in the 80's about a character called "Andrew".
And here are the words as I remember them,
Men, I'm checking out. We don't have light, water or .... something..
You can't even get good bottle of coca cola

... Then some other dude comes along, holds his shoulder and begs him not to leave Nigeria... be patriotic etc..
Andrew was played by Late Sir Enebeli Elebuwa.
Here is another recent version of that "type" of advert.

I think if one is close to 50 or above can still japa for the future of the children if the children are below 18 years of age and has a good plan but not earning fat salary in Nigeria as per say millions of Naira a month.

If such japa and is able to give the children opportunity to settle in the 🇬🇧. It's good.

Assuming at 50 one japa with 4 children below 18 years of age. By the time he is 55 those children have ILR ( indefinite leave to remain) by 57 those children are British Citizens.
The generation and next generation are settled and Have access at any part of the
world.
By then those children will be just about 24 years of age and below and making cool money with opportunities all over the world.
Same age thier mates in Nigeria are still struggling with the system and unemployment and other things that comes with it.
Even at 60 or 65 years of age the person retires and decides to go back to Nigeria, you will retire as a British Citizen. Your pension will be in £ while you are in Nigeria. You still have access to NHS even if you get sick you may decide to fly back to UK for treatment. Thier pension system is good you don't need be going to Abuja like Nigeria to get your legal entitlement.
In addition in the 🇬🇧 there's what they call E.D & E (Equality , Diversity & inclusion) in thier labour law which is well respected. An 18 yr old will be invited for and interview as well as a 59 yr old who meets the job specifications. Unlike Nigeria were a job will be advertised and will indicate 18 to 30 yr age limit hmmm that's discrimination. In 🇬🇧 go to TESCO one will see 59, 55 yr old doing cashier as well as 18yr old. Go to NHS and social care sectors same 18yr and 59 yr old care and support workers. I have met a Zimbabwian 65yr old care worker. So the writer of this article talking about 50yr old should not japa is discrimination talking out of Nigeria experience.

In a nutshell japa is worth it all way round for the future of you and the children. Even if you japa at 55 years of age.

With all said and done none of the Children of the Nigerian political class can oppress your children or you whether senators, Governors , Ministers or even the President. This is the reason they don't want people to japa. They know.

I am talking out of experience.

P.S., as previously stated, I am not against JAPA. In fact, the middle class and the working class have every right to JAPA. Nigeria is not working for them. What I am against, are those who are doing extremely well in Nigeria and decided to leave their jobs, sell their assets, properties and close their business in the name of emigrating abroad for "greener pastures". It is better for these people to secure a second passport via citizenship by investment. With a second passport, they can travel out of the country whenever they want. Always consult an immigration lawyer before making hasty decisions.

A lot of you just don't understand. Someone doing well is not relocating for a greener pasture but for his family. A chance at a better life in a structured economy and reasonable leaders.

Do you think it is easy to let go of a known place for an unknown nation?

Doctors shouldn't Jappa unless, in addition to swearing the Hippocratic oath, Nigeria Medical ecosystem demands an additional divine promise called the Hypocritic oath. Poor conditions, poor equipment, poor pay may be good reasons for other professionals to jappa but aren't good enough reasons for Doctors.

Doctors fleeing atrocious conditions is a little like labourers removing thire construction site, hubcap boots, because too many tacks are strewn about the ground.

Am not so sure

Some of these people you say are doing well maybe earn + or - N1m a month.

If you earn N1million a month in Nigeria, some might say you are earning a decent salary but that's just a paltry 1,000 Dollars and way too small for a professional at the peak of his career

Remove senior chartered account. KPMG, PWC, EY,BDO, and the other audit firms are filled with Nigerian accountants who were hired directly from Nigeria. People wey dey collect 400 to 600k monthly in Nigerian audit firms enter Uk to collect 46k to 65k pounds per year. Which starting all over be that

I worked in an audit firm in Nigeria, continued in Canada in same audit firm. Over 100 of my colleagues went to audit firms in uk. After tax they are still better off then when in Nigeria. 46k a year is about 3k monthly after tax. After bills he go save 1k to 1.5k pounds a month. In Nigeria savings will be like 200k naira a month
