A few days ago, I and a client embarked on this journey.
Although it was not the first time am helping a client get through it. I decided to document some of the challenges.

Read and learn

Here are some common challenges that you may face when registering a business in Nigeria:

Multiple registration agencies:

In Nigeria, different registration agencies are responsible for various aspects of business registration, such as the
Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) for company registration,
the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for tax registration, and other sector-specific regulatory bodies.

Coordinating and navigating through multiple agencies can be time-consuming and confusing. But nowadays, most of these things can be assessed online.

Bureaucracy and red tape:

Nigeria's bureaucratic system is slow and cumbersome, leading to delays in the registration process.

Corruption:

Corruption remains a challenge in Nigeria, and entrepreneurs encounter demands for bribes or face undue influence during the registration process.
There are often people claiming to be agents. With promises to help you get your business registered without stress.

This hinders the efficiency and transparency of the process and adds to the overall cost of doing business.

Inadequate infrastructure:

Nigeria faces infrastructure challenges, such as unreliable power supply, limited internet connectivity, and poor transportation networks. Take for instance the bad roads:

if you want to go to Abuja, it will take you days unless you are buoyant enough to fly.
These infrastructure gaps can affect the efficiency of business operations, including the registration process.

Lack of clarity in regulations:

The interpretation and application of business regulations in Nigeria sometimes lack consistency, leading to confusion and ambiguity.

This is why it is often recommended that you use the services of a lawyer.

Otherwise, you may struggle to understand and comply with the complex regulatory framework, which can further delay the registration process.

High cost of compliance:

Registering a business in Nigeria often involves various costs, including
registration fees,
legal fees, and
other compliance-related expenses.

These costs can be significant, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and may pose a financial burden for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Limited access to information:

Access to accurate and up-to-date information on business registration procedures, requirements, and legal frameworks can be challenging in Nigeria.

A way out of this is to always visit the CAC website before embarking on your business registration. Do this even if you are going to use the services of an expert.

Entrepreneurs may struggle to find reliable sources of information, leading to confusion and a lack of clarity during the registration process.

All of the above are what I and my client went through, to get his business registered. You too can do it yourself if you have the following three things:

1. if you have enough time to learn
2. If you have the desire to implement what you learn
3. If you know how to do your research.
