A nairalander recently sent in an email about his fears of HPV oral cancer after oral-genital contact with multiple partners.

Hello Dr.
I've recently been reading online and nairaland about sucking women down there leading to cancer of the mouth. I've done this multiple times with at least 30 women over the last 5 years.

Recently I have been feeling strange in the mouth sir ....should I be worried ?

What can I do Sir
?

My reply:

Please go through these FAQs about oral cancers

CH: It is primarily spread through sexual contact, especially through MouthAction from a man to a woman.

Q: Is an HPV-Related Cancer Treatable?

CH: Yes, it is highly treatable, with a 90 to 95% overall survival rate if detected. Treatment involves surgery, radiation, or a combination of both.

Q: Will the HPV Vaccine Help Prevent These Cancers?

CH :While we're optimistic about the vaccine's potential, its impact will likely take decades to manifest fully.

In summary dear Nairalander,

It is much too early to expect oral cancer from an HPV infected vulva you had contact with a few months ago.

Most healthy young men who come in contact with the virus ,get rid of the virus via their immune system.
The unlucky ones who can't clear the virus, may develop cancer but only after several decades.
So if you see a 70 year old with oral cancer it could be as a result of a contact he had in his 30s or 40s.

So, please take your mind off HPV and cancer.
You're only having a guilty conscience.
