Anxiety prickled her skin as she quickened her steps, casting furtive glances behind. The stalker closed in, ominous and silent. Panic set in, and Jennifer veered off the path, seeking refuge in the darkness.

Heart pounding, she hid behind a cluster of bushes, breath caught in her throat. The stalker's footsteps grew nearer, and terror seized her. A guttural scream tore through the air, abruptly silenced by the gruesome splatter of blood that painted the night.

Meanwhile, Detective Tony Abere awoke, gasping, his bed sheets clinging to his sweat-soaked body. He stumbled to the bathroom, splashing cold water on his face in a futile attempt to shake off the lingering nightmare. The shrill ring of his phone shattered the uneasy calm. Dread knotted his stomach as he answered. Another murder. The city's darkness held no surprises for Tony, but each crime carried a weight that burrowed deeper into his conscience.
