Floating is the best decision made so. You can't do any tangible thing with a controlled currency.

The problem is that the same govt creates mechanisms to enable none state actors racketeering with the currency.

Subsidy is still part of our problems. The fact is, we can't afford it because we do not run the type of economy China and co and USA run, an economy that is dependent on manufactured goods and services, and also has a high tax to gdp ratio...which can (Listen here), yield the kind of income that can pay enough subsidies.
(US does not pay subsides like we do. They pay subsides to the producer, not force down prices, and pay subsides that do not adequately cover the losses.).
Can we copy the US model of subsidising producers? I doubt it because of our padipadi mentality. However, we can subsidise production inputs generally.
Corruption is also part of our problem. Infact , subsides are one of the fuel for corruption.
An honest/serious government will find a way to limit corruption by for example fixing our refineries, etc. Shouldn't be that difficult.

It's because you misunderstand me, and think that I blame all the problems on subsidy that you came to the above conclusion.(That's why I don't like talking much on nairaland these days. Most of you guys are here to campaign for your side, not to have serious discussions).
Come on bro, we're discussing policies here and not personalities. And even though I don't like Tinubu, I don't have confidence in Atiku or Obi either. However, if these guys were the only available options, Tinubu would not be my first choice because I lived through his so-called glory days as governor of Lagos and I didn't really see the glory. Fashola is my man.

It sounds good enough in theory, but in practice...we can't afford to do that because

1.Our tax to gdp is too low

2.We don't want to do the initial sacrifice and hardship that all industrial countries go through before they end up becoming industrial. We instead share the money. That is what governments past, and present have done, and when we run out , we take loans

3.We don't want to fight corruption

4. producing things is expensive. We don't want to pay the expense.

All in all, we don't have a serious government that is ready to do all that. Because, money has to be shared.
1. Our tax to GDP arguement is a bit of a chicken and egg situation. Do you increase the tax burden on a barely thriving business or so as to create a business friendly environment or do you create a business friendly environment so that you can increases taxes to maintain it? I think if they put all the money they have been borrowing into good use, we'll be able to do the latter.

2. Our leaders' lavish lifestyle is not encouraging bro. You can't tell people who are barely surviving to sacrifice while you spend our meagre resources on SUVs and house renovations.

3. I agree 100%.

4. You can't give what you don't have bro. I lost a business deal just yesterday for the same reason. Cost.

Not just increase exports. Increase exports of manufactured products...whose prices we can control, and set. Not increasing exports of crude oil, groundnut, cocoa and palm oil, and cotton, whose prices are controlled by cartels, which even if we are a part of the cartel, it never favours us.

What do Japan, South Korea, China, the EU, USA, UK, Norway , Russia, and Switzerland all have in common?

They are ALL exporters of MANUFACTURED GOODS AND SERVICES.

And until Nigeria becomes one of them, we cannot have a strong currency.

The APC and PDP AND millitary governments are all inept because none of them are doing the above. Yes, that includes the Tinubu government too.

So you're political.... Atiku had the best plan of the three candidates.
Obi is better than Tinubu. You claim you don't like him because he lies which is fair. But Tinubu is a worse liar and not just that, worst is he's lied under oath several times which is perjury. So if you're choosing based on lies, Tinubu can't be better than Obi.

We should (and in a way we are eg Tax breaks to people like Dangote) but it does not mean we would get cheap fuel.

An honest/serious government will find a way to limit corruption by for example fixing our refineries, etc. Shouldn't be that difficult.

And fixing the refineries is one thing, keeping them running...that is where subsidy removal comes in...so that they earn enough of a profit to pay for themselves...like every sane business.

You want subsidy, then that is where we pay for it by improving our tax to gdp ratio.

Come on bro, we're discussing policies here and not personalities. And even though I don't like Tinubu, I don't have confidence in Atiku or Obi either. You are looking at someone here who does not support any of the names here, and who would never vote for any one of them. Yes, including Tinubu.

(And thanks for insuinating I am a tinubu supporter. Lord knows I get too much of it here because i don;t follow the nairaland crowd. Some even think I am an Obi supporter self).

I think if they put all the money they have been borrowing into good use, we'll be able to do the latter.

So how else do we raise money? Yeah we should cut costs. But at the end of the day, short term, taxes, long term diversification

It's cold reality. This oil we are dragging...it isn't enough unless we were 40 million people.

2. Our leaders' lavish lifestyle is not encouraging bro. You can't tell people who are barely surviving to sacrifice while you spend our meagre resources on SUVs and house renovations.

1.Please, again, you are annoying me by insuinating I back our leader's corrupt overspending.

2.Yes it should stop. But would it improve money available for the masses? No. That;s where we got to ....improve revenue.

3. I agree 100%.

4. You can't give what you don't have bro. I lost a business deal just yesterday for the same reason. Cost.

SO either we take hard decisions, or just accept our state. We want to be a bigger rich nation, we got to make the sacrifices the rich nations made...or we pretend we are rich, share the money and keep taking loans.

In Western nations, elites are not separate from the poor. Messi shopped at a normal mall in US when he first arrived and there wasn't much fuss about it. Most good things there are basically available to the average person.
So don't use your Nigerian mentality to judge others.
Like I already told you, Nigerians are exporting. Officially, we exported over 12trn worth of goods and services in the last quarter. In sane countries, that should see our naira rise in value. Why is that not the case here?

Bro I believe even if they would eventually float it, they should have been more intentional with it. I mean they should have known items that are required to improve local production and subsidised those. That's how the Chinese government is helping Huawei and co to stay alive in the mobile phone market.

The China you are quoting first of all is a communist country they rule by decrees ,
2. It took them 30 odd years to get to where they are.
3. Go and read about how many Chinese people died during these period ,nothing good comes easy ,Nigerians want to eat their cake and have it , they don't want to suffer or do any hard work they just want to be like dubai overnight and sadly politicians are more interested in winning elections s0 they keep running populist policies not because it will develop us but just to keep masses Happy.

They could cut cost, borrow less, reduce rent seeking, provide incentives for company to invest in expansion, encourage domestic consumption by they themselve patronizing made-in-Nugeria goods......many countries thrive without being export oriented and we do not have to wait until we have a net positive balance of trade before we experience growth and progress in the country.

Your claim is funny. There are homeless drug addicts in Nigeria too and I don't think the average Nigerian will also want to associate with them.
Let me give you an example. When Shoprite came to Nigeria, both poor and elites patronised it not so? That's because the facility while top class was affordable.
The standard of living of the average Joe in US is not so far from that of the elites over there. Unlike here that the gap is wide. That's the point I'm making
