It's about time we put a stop to this tribal/ethnic contest. The dick measuring contest is not doing us any good and it hurts to see our dear Nairaland go down the abyss.

Both Igbos and we Yorubas have a share of the blame. Elections have come and gone. Lets put the past behind us and chart a common cause for the future.

To my Igbo fellows, attack APC/Tinubu but leave out Yorubas.

To the Yorubas, lets separate constructive criticism from Obi/SE or the Igbo race.

Enough is enough guys. We are brothers.

Time to move on!

There is a difference between Yorubas and Fulanis.

Fulanis don't do social media, so it's very likely most of them never saw those divisive comments. Besides, the harsh reactions during Buhari was directly linked to his body attitude whenever killer herdsmen are at it.

The situation is different now because Yorubas are Tech savvy. They are everywhere from Nairaland to Twitter, etc. The heat generated when to ferocious groups clash won't be funny.

For someone like me, I never attacked Igbos until they started insulting Yorubas because Tinubu won the elections. Infact, I voted Peter Obi in February.

Like OP says, the blame goes to both tribes. And it's unfortunate our children will grow up to continue this if care is not taken.

sorry bro, I was just trying to say, that, you can't really take away the tribalistic bigotry away from Nigerians, especially the Igbos and Yorubas. The northerners may consider you on religious grounds, but Yoruba and Igbos....hmmmm

Na inferiority complex dey worry Yorubas and Igbos, them dey drag who pass each other.

They are both co-wife trying to outdo each other, seeking for whom to be loved more by their husband (Hausa/Fulani). The matter didn't start today and will never end, they've learned how to tolerate each other and live together without love for decades.

The kind of tolerance and no love lost Leah and Rachel Jacobs wives had for each other despite living in same house, marrying same husband is what the Yorubas and Igbos have for each other.

Let say the fact. The igbos really need to work on themselves on how they handle criticism. How come every tribe doesn't like them or they are the one who think people hate them when things doesn't go their ways. If you observe very well, Nigerians like them but they know not how to manage criticism.... I love the igbos and I love to experience their presidency... grin cheesy

An attack on Tinubu or APC is an attack on yoruba

- Yoruba Ronu

If you criticize the borrowing of $180m to buy vehicles for senators , you must be a sore loser or IPOB from the SE

If you dare make any comment against Tinubu/APC that does not involve singing praises , you’re a loser

- Yoruba Ronu

Abi no be so 🙄

Same here bro.

If you see me not responding to their banters, it is either I'm serving ban or I arrived when the party is over.

They started it and two can play the game very well.

Here comes the Fulani apologist

Even when his own people were slaughtered en masse by marauding herdsmen .

Where are the cows ?

Was it religion or party loyalty that blinded you to the atrocities of the herdsmen with the tacit support of the president ?

Own up to your tribal bigotry man and don’t hide under chivalry /need to defend Fulani

Re: Enough Of Online Ethnic Contest On Nairaland by nairalanda1(m): 5:38pm On Dec 04, 2023
Ethnic contest on this site is not going to end.

The problem with democracy in Africa (which is why people like Museveni attempted to run a no-party system, before he gave up and allowed parties) is that parties in Africa are basically complex tribal alliances. That has been seen in Nigeria in the first, second and third republic.

The whole Yourba v Igbo thing has its origins in the 2010-14 period. May even go back to the 1990's and even 1960's self. Anyway, logn story short, Igbos put their eggs in the PDP basket, as did anti-Tinubu yourbas. Pro-Tinubu yourbas, and a large contigent of the North put their eggs in the APC basket. APC won the war of 2010-14, and is still winning.

That has provoked the kind of bitter tribal online battle we see here.

Why is it important? You see, if your side wins elections, you get access to jobs, connections, national cake, for you and your relatives. Your side loses, you lose out on all of that. That is why any criticism of the government in charge is viewed as an attack on the tribe....even if it is legitimate criticisim.

As an example...my stance on some issues like subsidy has gotten me labelled an APC supporter...because the other side sees people who support subsidy removal now as having betrayed GEJ by oppositng subsidy removal...and by extension contributing to their loss of the 2015 election and all their chances. My stance on the kind of evil comments about Peter Obi and recently my maintaining that the SE is very productive and industrial...has got me labelled IPOB.

American politics it isn't....because in the USA if your party loses, so what? (Even government job...one family friend of my parents once commented that the US government was finding it difficult attracting academics to join the government...this was in the 1990's...because many of them did not want to leave their cushy private university jobs.).

That's why tis site is so bitter and angry. People are angry that their side lost, the APC side is gloating that they won. That;s why the war is not going to stop.

The following below was written for Sierra Leone, but it applies to Nigeria.(It also makes the call for coup by the PDP-LP side of the divide on this site understandable).

High unemployment mean lots of people want steady government jobs, she explains. This means the stakes are high during elections - people feel they need to be affiliated with certain parties in order to have access to state jobs and other benefits.

"If your political party loses, that means someone else comes in and if you've been open about your political affiliation you lose all you have: influence, opportunities and access."

Now what would have happened if Tinubu lost the election? I bet you there would be calls for Odua republic all over this site, there would be calls for Yourba people to wake up, and there would be calls for war , and meanwhile Biafra would be recast as a means of defence.

Remember when Sharia was popular? That was the North telling Obasanjo that they did not willingly hand over power to him. Had nothing to do with religion (jnfact, sharia is not working as it should. ...because it was never about the religion.).

That's why there would never be an end to this war. We are a nation reliant on government for employment and goodies, and he who controls that controls a lot. That is why the stakes are so high, and why there is so much bitterness here.

Indeed trying to be neutral is like opening one to abuse (today I have been called Agbado on one side, and IPOB on the other.).

Is there hope? No. Only way forward is if Nigeria becomes less dependent on government. Maybe Tinubu would get serious and remove subsides on power and petrol, and the resulting job growth would cause our private sector to grow...to the point where it does not matter if you have a government job or not. But this government is not serious at all.

Indeed both sides are so entrenched that they cannot see that the governments they support are essentially the same thing. Since 1999, all governments that have run Nigeria have done the same thing over and over again. It is getting sickening. But they can't see it because government is not about ideology for most Nigerians...it is about survival.

Rant over.

Tinubu supporters started the insults? Either you are simply mischievous or daft, whichever it won't change anything.

My first moniker on this forum was registered in 2007, after reading as a guest for more than a year.

The ibos brought in tribalism here, they kept insulting and calling everyone names. They started disparaging Awolowo.

To be fair, Tinubu supporters started the insults. Funnily, the Tinubu supporters have also been insulting South-Southerners in the name of insulting Igbos.
