Discriminating Prospective Tenants In Lagos by babyfaze09: 6:38am On Oct 31, 2011
It is so sad to imagine where this country of ours is headed.

I work in one of the financial institutions in Nigeria and with stable income. I decided to go all out to search for accommodation. I placed several calls to agents from nairaland and out nairaland. On phone, deals were concluded as regards pricing and when I went for inspection of the proposed houses, I realize that either the houses in question are not worth it at all or the location where these houses are situated is nothing to write home about.

What baffles me is that fact the good houses are over priced and when either the landlords or care-takers sees the prospective tenant, they discriminate by saying they do not want 'non-yorubas'. Has it come to this level where tribalism is one of the criteria in providing accommodation when the prospective tenant has a good source of income? I wonder

I also learnt from a Lawyer (In Unilag) during my course of this search that landlords do not prepare tenancy agreements to prospective tenants anymore but rather prepare commercial lease agreement which protects them from the tenancy law in Lagos. Where are we going in this state or this country? The makers of the law are definitely the breakers of these laws as they are also landlords too.

God help us

Amen!!!
