PORTUGUESE AMBASSADOR TO NIGERIA VISTS LASU, DISCUSSES COLLABORATION WITH UNIVERSITY

This is a historic visit - Vice Chancellor

Head of the Portuguese Mission and Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E Amb Paulo Santos, on Tuesday, 5th December 2023, paid a visit to the Lagos State University, where he was received by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji -Bello, mni, NPOM, and other members of nanagement of the institution. H.E. Amb. Santos, who was accompanied by Mrs Sandra Bento, said the visit was birthed out of interest for the large number of students studying the Portuguese language in the university.

He said, “At a recent engagement, I found out that there are quite a lot of students taking Portuguese, about 500 of them here in Lagos State University and I felt the need to familiarise myself and interact with them. I am very happy with the interest shown by the students in the language, and I intend to come back after their exams to interact with them.”

The Ambassador who arrived Nigeria about seven months ago also expressed enthusiasm at a potential partnership between LASU and the Portuguese government on various mutually beneficial areas saying “ I see a lot of possibilities in what we can do together “.

In her response, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olatunji Bello described the visit as a historic one. She said, “ This is a historic visit. We are happy to have your Excellency on our campus.

The visit, which lasted about 30 minutes, dwelt on extensive deliberations between officials of the University and the Ambassador’s team over areas of collaborations aimed at strengthening the teaching and learning of the Portuguese language in the university.

Prof. Tayo Ajayi, Director, Center for Afro-Brazilian Studies, who facilitated the meeting, was involved in the deliberations as the teams agreed to put action plans in place to achieve fruitful cooperation.

The visit took place at the office of the Vice Chancellor with officials of the VC’s office and Portuguese lecturers from the Department of Foreign Languages were also present.
