Wannune, Nigeria.

The Wannune camp was a melting pot of all sorts of metals. And we were the metals. Graduates, the soldiers called us, sometimes, goats. We were to drop every ounce of human rights we thought we had at the camp gate, and be appreciative of some of the humane treatments we got. You were just a corper in a white and white PE outfit, whatever you thought you were outside the camp. Whenever any of the officials said “Weeee”, you had to open your mouth and say “Waaaah!” like a hungry child and take it all as a cruise and fun if you want to enjoy the camp experience.

The diversity was beautiful, but it was sometimes clashing and invoked emotions unprovoked. You could be washing your plate outside, preparing for the next kitchen meal before another parade under the sun. Then you overhear some girls most likely from the same school chatting away in Yoruba language with an undiluted Ekiti accent. They do not even care about appearances and you no longer have to wonder why your own Yoruba felt bland, characterless, and maybe boring because of the inflected ‘American-Nigerian accent’ on your Yoruba that made you sound sophisticated.

Just like a pot of Jollof rice where all ingredients are poured in at a go in unspecific proportions, you don’t expect a proper Nigerian jollof in all its glory. Except by luck, you most likely get a mess of coloured rice, maybe waterlogged and salty. However, I’m reminiscing about the 21 stressful days with officers from the Nigerian Army, Civil Defense, Man O’war, and Local government officials and can only see the essence of the new lens through which I’ve been forced to see.
