10 Unprofessional Attitudes by Recruiters.

Creating a positive interview experience for candidates is key in the hiring process as it impacts on your brand and ability to attract top talent but often at times, in the bid to meet up with deadlines, we overlook some acceptable behaviors and gradually, these becomes entrenched as our culture. Some of these that have creeped into the way we treat candidates are:

1. Failing to apologise for delayed Interview sessions and thinking it is acceptable to keep candidates waiting endlessly.

2. Not stating the time period that candidates should expect to wait for their interview to aid their effective planning.

3. Sending out interview invites within 24 hours and expecting candidates to show up for it.

4. Inviting out of state candidates especially recent graduates for interview without any provision for a transport fare.

5. Not sending out timely feedback to unselected candidates especially those that have moved beyond the first stage. (Job profile should state that only qualified candidates would be invited except where there is an automated system in place).

6. Harassing candidates and disguising it as Stress- Interview.

7: Interviewing candidates that came later rather than following the order of arrival. (Contestable?).

8. Making an issue about employment gaps and disqualifying competent candidates on that basis.

9. Intentionally Intimidating candidates and making them feel uncomfortable either by staring hard at them and asking questions that are suggestive and full of innuendo.

10. Highlighting candidates mistake in a derogatory manner rather than correcting respectfully or making snide remarks during panel interviews.

(Do you have any that you can add or have you ever been subjected to any of these, please feel free to share).

Let me take a moment to get you into the Christmas mood.

This is truly one of the best things I've come across today.

Having personally experienced this, it has unfortunately become a common culture, something applicants expect and consider the norm.

I've seen individuals leave interviews with low self-esteem, even when they thought they would do well.

Making employees to lie because he or she is scared of not getting a job after saying the truth.

Not having a unified salary scale for a particular role thereby making some earn higher others lower on same position.

Inviting for an interview without prior examination of the employee Resume only for you to dismiss the employee with the reason that he or she is not qualified to be interviewed.

Please try and have a virtual interview with the employee before invitation. Cost of transportation is quite high to be wasted on an interview or better still try and be reimbursing tfare to those you are sure you won't employ at the end of the day.

11. Requesting for last salary and a payment prove. Asking candidates for 6 months previous pay slips.
It's.wrong and should be stopped. You already have a budget for the role. What the candidates takes where he is coming from shouldn't be a yardstick to determine what you will pay him. Only unstructured organizations do that.

Your acknowledgment of this issue is much appreciated. Thank you for calling it out.
