The downtime of one of Nigeria’s most popular websites, Nairaland.com, on Wednesday, entered the third day on Wednesday with users showing their displeasure over the site’s inaccessibility.

Nairaland, an online discussion forum, that has dominated Nigeria’s web rankings for almost 20 years, went down on Monday after it was “taken down” by the host of its server.

The forum’s founder, Seun Osewa, disclosed via tweets on his X profile early Tuesday that the downtime was due to an abusive report which he had “overlooked” after it was “originally sent on the 14th.”

He added that the server was taken down by the host after which he “removed the offensive content.”

However, he stated that after taking some hours to get support on how to resolve the issue, the forum was restored on the server.

Osewa added that matters took another turn when “they took the server down again with no warning.”

The forum’s founder, in a tweet early Wednesday, appealed to users and advertisers on the forum, adding that his “neglect of Nairaland is directly responsible.”

The tweet read, “Dear Nairaland members and advertisers, I’m very sorry for this unacceptable, ill-timed outage.

“My neglect of Nairaland is directly responsible. I was also unprepared to move to a new host at a moment’s notice after nine years with the current host. The process is ongoing but slow.”

However, users of the forum and tweeps of the social media app, X, have been expressing their displeasure and disappointment over the development.

A user, @BashirAhmaad, tweeted, “Does anyone have information on what’s happening with Nairaland? Typically, it is part of my nightly routine to check the site before bed, but it appears the page is down tonight. Could it be a technical issue, hacking, or something else?”

@jigslionheart wrote, “You mean you have never thought about investing in your own server? As big as NL is?”

Another tweep, @ebunleyi stated, “@seunosewa still think Nairaland is a joke. You overlook what? Imagine if Google experienced such downtime. You really do not rate Nairaland like we rate it sha. Get an active team in place and upscale this site. It means a lot to a lot of Nigerians.”

@rani_reine tweeted, “No wonder. I have tried logging in multiple times in the past six hours. Please get it back.”

Another user, @akintollgate, wrote, “Nairaland is bigger than being at the mercy of a host! Scale! Scale! Scale…..I open Nairaland at 7am, 12pm, 5pm and 11pm daily! You have built a true indigenous brand! It’s bigger than what your preferences are….build a team and let it unleash its potential! All the best…..”

One user, @Bimfo, stated, “Own the Abuse team. Have your server at your disposal. As you said in 2014 when we were hacked, Nairaland is bigger now. Oga Mii, Employ people. You are capable. If you really want to consider this advice, you can start by employing me, sir. I will manage any amount.”

Seun, clean up this forum.

People on X kept saying that you should fire Mynd44. That's if you aren't the person behind the moniker.

I don't understand how someone could be a moderator and still be taking tribal perspective on issues. I even thought I was the only person who noticed it.

Block all accounts that call ladies unprintable names and block female monikers that denigrate males. They should take their madness elsewhere.

Use IP addresses to block a bunch of people who rarely make reasonable contributions without getting tribalistic, attacking Igbos, Yorubas and Northerners.

It's high time you took what happens here more seriously!

It's a joke to him because he's always on Twitter more than his own forum. Who does that? Imagine Mack Zuckerberg tweeting continuously on Twitter while he abandons Facebook.

Just imagine!!

Nairaland needs a team for community notes and community standards.

For a start. Nairaland should vet some users before their threads appear public.

Seun need to sit up and ensure nairaland is free from tribalism or he sell this site for someone that is willing to do the needful. I saw him tweeting about nairaland issue on X.
He supposed to be happy that nairaland was down so that he can concentrate fully on X.

Seun,Seun,Seun, How many times did I call you

Seun, why now? Don't you understand how big Nairaland is,please I beg you in the name of whatever you believe. Get your own server, there is no reason why Nairaland should be at the mercy of third parties to host its website. It is unimaginable that owners of Nairaland cannot buy shares in a Hosting company considering how Vital this site is.

Nairaland is a National Treasure, it is the seventh most visited site in Nigerians both at home and in the Diaspora, please seun if you don't have the resources to buy and build your own server you need to look at the possibility of buying shares in a already established server to avoid this embarrassment
I can't imagine the money you lost in the last three or four days, and to imagine that Nairalanders were at the mercy of some individuals is really sad

Let me end by saying this: Never ever allow your business be at the mercy of individuals or corporations that can switch you off in a twinkle of an eye,it shows you are not big enough

Seun, grow your influence and become a player and not a spectator

Na wa oo. He should fire Mynd44 ? And leave the other Mods from your region so that he can continue deleting our counter-offensives?

Who are the so-called people on X calling for the head of Mynd44? Are they not your people hiding under their numerous fake accounts , just like they did during the elections.

They would open an account in Hausa or Muslim name and be praising Peter Obi - thinking we are daft.

How about the other Mods from your side that is sabotaging our own comments just to protect the interests of his own people? Abi you think say all the Mods on Nairaland are Yoruba?

Even if Seun hires foreigners to Moderate Nairaland, you and your people will still be crying foul that the foreigners are biased & taking sides because ALL OF YOU ARE BELLIGERENT & HATE-FILLED.

That is exactly how some of your arrogant & uncultured people were gaslighting Seun on Twitter to ban LeoTheKing & Omenka.

He should ban LeoTheKing & Omenka and leave your own bigoted tribal warriors that always trigger the tribal wars by going about looking for people’s trouble?

I am not surprised with your reasoning one bit, because it is genetic.

Now, if you want to respond to my comment, let your sentence begin with: “I am not Igbo but bla bla bla”.

All of you are so predictable & annoying.

how are you sure he is not the one behind that moniker? The same mynd44 that was caught engaging in ethnic banters and he quickly deleted it and locked the thread? Such an audacity can only come from the owner of the site.

Again, who approved the anti-Igbo advert from sanwoolu in the wake of Lagos governorship election?

Who pushes Reno Omokiri's ethnic profiling to front-page?

Hate nairaland or like it, it is still the only indigenous social media that we have.

The reason why a lot of people hate nairaland is because of the anonymity feature it offers. No room for assss licking. People can drop their comments without minding who is watching.

Unlike twitter and those other platforms where everyone is fighting for followers for validation. People come online to brag and seek validation just for followership. Some twitter users will be like "I have a list of websites where you can get remote jobs. Follow, like and retweet for me to send the list to your inbox" some will say "As a front end developer in an interview and your interviewer asks you bla bla bla, here's how to answer" others will say "How to be a developer in 2 days, bla BLA bla". All because they are looking for followers.

Nobody send your papa for nairaland. Drop your thread or comment and go. Nobody will asss lick you. Although some nairalanders have the ass licking traits in them but no room for that bullshit on this platform.

Once I see a topic that doesn't align with me, I won't even view the thread.

Unlike twitter and the others where you're forced to see everything. Then you start muting or blocking people.

I like nairaland more than every social media out there save for WhatsApp.

One thing you should asked yourself before wailing this much is, if Mynd44 is the only mod in this site. of all the mods here, why are people shouting for his head? Clearly, whoever that is behind that account has gone contrary to the ethics of his work many times. The way I have seen other mods behave here is not the way the so called Mynd44 behaves. Seun needs to purge that soul immediately from moderating this site, except he's the one behind the account.

Seun has not been serious with Nairaland, that's all. He has enjoyed grace which a lot of people don't have but if you misuse it, it will turn to disgrace. I was here since inception and only came back recently. Nairaland is built by the quality of people on the platform, once they go, it becomes garbage.

Many people have tried to have their forums which are not successful. But again, companies have survived for years and died because the owners have taken business for granted. Success is a drug, you don't defend it you keep going hungry. That's why it's easier for people to rise to the top than stay there. A wise king uses the counsel of fools and chiefs to reign successfully.

They can but they need training. You need matured people to do it. Nairaland started going down from 2007 elections of Yar Adua. Politics and tribalism have eaten the forum. A moderator who cannot be objective cannot do well. Seun also needs training and mentorship. Nairaland is not a PlayStation anymore.

If mods like Mynd44 continues to overlook tribalistic and ethnic bashing, you will hear from the hosts again.

In fact Seun should remove Mynd44 the tribalistic mod, if doesn't want another repeat.

I report tribalistic handles, yet they keep posting because the mods love the tribalistic posts they make.

The web hosts will regulate you, if you will not self-regulate properly.
