Chapter one

The beeping sound from my alarm kept disturbing my wonderful sleep. What can I do? I have to reckon with its call. Getting up from my bed, I grabbed my phone from my mini table and turned it off. My eyes wandered to the message notification at the top of my screen.

"Ah!! Zainab'' I unconsciously muttered, attempting to open the message. But that tiny little voice in my head…. That voice that gets me pissed off most times reminded me that I haven't prayed yet. At this point, I was tempted to change the system of praying first before any other thing in the morning. I mean, this is Zainab we are talking about, every gist or message from her was always fascinating. She should have been a blogger or something cause she always has something interesting especially when it comes to things happening in the company. Most times, I wonder how she gets them because they always appear to be true.

Inhaling deeply, I decided to pray first. I won't completely say that I am a devoted Christian but my late mom would always emphasize the importance of prayer up until she passed away.

"Baby girl, I think Mrs Douglas is going to make us smile today" it reads.

I read it over and over again with a broad smile on my face. If this happens, as usual, we both will go to our favorite restaurant and have our stomachs filled up with all the food. I love food!!. Then at night, Zainab would drive down to my house, to drag me to a club for more celebration.

Zainab is a vibe giver, there's never a dull moment around her. I remember once when she came to the office wearing a Santa outfit. I mean, it was hilarious…. Interestingly, we had an important meeting that same day with some investors. My boss was very mad at her because of the outfit, thinking it would make it seem like we were some bunch of unserious people with every form of unprofessionalism hovering around us. Funny enough, we got the deal.

"Your employee appears hilarious but I like the aura, the comfort her appearance brings"

Those were the exact words they had said to us. That day, my boss credited me and Zainab with some good cash. I'm not as energetic as Zainab…. But I'm not a boring person either. I just love doing my things my way and my name is….. Nora Raymond.

The hustling and buzzing in the city of Lagos is something we all have become accustomed to. Everyday, there's always something to either amuse, annoy or frustrate you. This particular cold hamattan morning, it's the drama from my bus driver. He practically parked his old looking bus by the side of a gas station, only to rush into the station to demand debt from one of the station's attendant who has been owing him for months now. Did I just say demand?. I got it wrong.... Cause he's out there throwing punches at the hungry looking attendant.

How can this be happening on a Monday morning??!. You need to see the reactions from my fellow passengers. Some yelled in anger cussing and swearing, calling on the gods of their lands. Some resolved to quarreling the bus conductor and asking for a refund of their transportation fare, which wasn't easy as the young sharp tongued bus conductor was ready to give them back hot hot. While the rest like myself, got down from the bus murmuring and complaining under our breath as we boarded another taxi.

"Miss early bird arrived late today". Zainab teased immediately I walked into the office we shared with one other colleague. She was dressed in a black chiffon and a yellow penciled skirt, a perfect combo for her sweet shape, then a small ijab on her head.

"All thanks to all these annoying Lagos drivers, always ruining my mornings" I replied, getting annoyed all over again.

"Gist me" she said giving me a mocking look. I rolled my eyes at her.

"Abeg jor, give me gist". She nudged making herself comfortable on her seat.

Zainab almost had herself rolling on the floor in laughter after I narrated my experience to her.

"Do you mean the aboki man called the conductor an epileptic squirrel?. Omo!! See aboki man ohh". Zainab asked as she bursted into laughter again. This time I joined her, the whole anger disappearing into thin air. That's what happens when you're with someone like Zainab.

Chapter 2

Most people in the Company would always gossip about me and Mrs Douglas's relationship. Most believed I was some sort of a distant relation, others felt I was like an unofficial help to her. I never really had the time to clear up their confusion and don't even plan to do so. I wouldn't blame them cause the love and special treatment I've always received from her is enough to make such a conclusion. Everything I have today is all thanks to her, and I'd be forever grateful to her. How can I possibly explain to them that I'm only an OND holder occupying a position in the company which most of them are more qualified to hold, and earning more than most of them?. I can't do that, so I rather keep my mouth shut. Sometimes, I feel like telling Zainab about it but I can't bring myself to do it. I really can't. That may bring some friction to our friendship and I wouldn't want that. I even pleaded with Mrs Douglas to let me share an office with some staff even though I am their line manager, with the intention of creating some sort of relationship as some of them were already treating me differently.

“Aren't you done” Zainab half yelled. It's closing time and she's ready to leave.

“Not yet, just some report to-”

“Madam pack up jor. You can do it at home. Mrs Douglas… or should I say, your office mother?......” She paused and raised an eyebrow at me “.......wouldn't mind” She completed daring me to counter her.

“Yes, she wouldn't mind but I do mind. I have to finish up. See ya tomorrow”. I said dismissively.

Just then my phone beeped. I peeped into the screen and sighed in disapproval.

“Who's it from?. A new boo?” Zainab teased appearing in front of my desk all of a sudden. I thought she was leaving already.

“It's no one”. With eyes focused on my laptop. I continued typing.

“Then I'll just…....” I immediately grabbed my phone before she could take it. She bursted into laughter. A mocking one at that.

“I thought you were so focused on typing?. When did you suddenly turn to flash?. Oshey, Berry Allen” I rolled my eyes in response.

“Fine….” I paused, raising her curiosity, knowing how much she hated such acts.

“Nora!” She yelled threatening me with her big eyes.

“Fine, fine” I raised my hands in surrender as I chuckled at her facial expression.

“Well, it's a former coursemate of mine. He just completed his house and he wants our set to have a get together at his house this Christmas” I explained, relaxing myself on my seat.

For some reason, I could feel my heart tightening.

Zainab rolled her eyes in confusion.

“So….. why aren't you excited about it? I mean, you'll get to see some old friends” She asked with furrowed brows.

"That's it. I do not want to see them".

She scoffed in disbelief.

"Why?"

I inhaled tiredly, exhaling almost immediately while running my hands through my long artificial hair.

“My ex would be there”

“What!!? You have an ex?” She looks so bewildered, like I said something abominable.

“Excuse me?”

“Madam, you are excused. You have an ex?” She repeated again, scoffing in disbelief.

“You know, I would have sworn with my life that you are a virgin. What the Bleep? How much more do I have to unveil about you?” Her eyes were piercing into mine accusingly.

“Well I never told you that” I defended, which was the truth. I never did. She just assumed that, and it's wrong to make assumptions about people's lives.

“Yes, you never did but you never accepted to be with a man. You decline whenever they approach you and turn down the ones I introduced you to, don't-”

“I go on dates” I cut in, defensively.

“Yes but you never accept going home with them. You don't even let anyone touch you when we go to a club”.

“Well, that's how I choose to live,” I simply replied.

We remained quiet for a while. I was slightly afraid to speak, at the same time afraid of what she would ask.

“You still have to go” she finally broke the silence. I gazed at her, am I really ready to face them?.

“I don't know if I can,” I muttered, almost to myself. But she heard it because she asked 'why’.

“We all have exes, so? Abeg babe you are going for that reunion, get-together…. Whatever it is. Where is it happening?” She asked with a don't-dare-me look.

“Port Harcourt” I replied.

“Ah! PH City!!! This Christmas will be a blessing for some people, oh” she said teasingly, I couldn't help but smile.

Well, everything that happened was six years ago. I should stop bothering myself and hope for a blissful Christmas get-together.

“Madam, better catch one fine rich Bobo oh. Na so I for just die for one Oracle front, if to say I go swear for you”

I chuckled but said nothing. What could I possibly say?

“Have you heard me?” This girl will never rest.

“Yes Mother. I will make sure to catch one fine rich Bobo and drag him back here to Lagos”.

“If that your ex is still single, you can-”

“Enough abeg. I'm going there to mind my business. I'm too busy to even keep a relationship” I cut in.

“But you are not busy going to the club abi?. This girl, your way no pure” she fired with a very amusing expression. Making me burst into laughter.

❤️❤️❤️❤️

Before going home, I stopped at the mall to shop for some items I'd be needing for my one week vacation. Sometimes I'd get excited over it, other times, a strong sad feeling will envelop me. It's been over six years since I left Rivers State. Over six years since I last saw my friends. Over six years since I moved one from all the sad memories and experiences I faced. Now, I'm going back there. Not the same person anymore. But someone stronger and more successful. I'd make sure to have fun and be as happy as ever.

I got home and rushed into the shower. Letting the warm water caress my soft skin while I imagined what the event would be like, at the same time, reminding myself that I have to let Mrs Douglas know of it.

I remained in the shower longer than usual, until...... Wait!!! Is that the smell of something burning??. My eyes almost popped out. I immediately grabbed my towel, wrapped it round my wet body and rushed out of the bathroom.

I have never felt so stupid like I feel right now. I rushed to my kitchen to realize I wasn't even cooking anything and the smell is from my neighbors house. Sighing in annoyance, I headed for the location.

With all seriousness I knocked on the supposed door. Gradually I was choking from the smoke and wondered if there's no one in the house. I knocked harder.

"Neighbor!!" I managed to scream.

In a little while, my always-at-home neighbor came rushing out with a lady, while they coughed and spat.

"Do you people want to burn down the place?" I scolded, obviously pissed.

"Nothing serious happened. it wasn't intentional anyways" he replied casually.

"Next time be more intentional, people live here too" I replied. He almost burned down the place and here he is talking as if it's a small thing.

"You too have to be intentional about yourself. You don't stand here wrapped in a towel, dishing out advice to people ''....

Did he say towel?. I looked down at myself and realized I was still wrapped on my towel. Kill me already.

Chapter 3

The journey down to Port Harcourt was very exciting even though the beginning almost spoilt my mood. I had woken up very high-spirited, got ready, and waited for the bolt driver I booked to take me down to the airport. He arrived after twenty minutes. I was upset at first but had to let it slide as he apologized honestly, explaining that his car broke down on his way to my house. I got in and he drove off. I got to the airport and was told that my flight that was scheduled for 10 am had been moved to noon for some reasons I don't seem to understand. Deciding to make the best out of the situation, I got out my laptop and began to finish up the work I hadn't completed the previous day.

A scream suddenly was heard, distracting me from my work. I swiftly turned towards its direction, it was a lady happily in the arms of who I assume was her man. Both couples were filled with smiles. It seems everyone around was captivated by the admirable scene. Slowly, he let go of her and went on his knees. I opened my mouth in awe, clasping it with my hands almost immediately to avoid screaming. Afterward, he got out of a box…. Yes, you guessed right. A box which contained a glittering ring with a diamond stone at the top. A louder scream erupted from the extremely excited lady's mouth, she was hopping so much that one would think that she learned it from a grasshopper. The observers like myself and the rest began to clap joyfully, some urging her to say yes, even though it was obvious the Bambi would say ‘yes’. She did say yes as she straightened her nicely manicured fingers for the ring to slide in.

“No be to jump like tennis ball oh, she go fit stay for the marriage?”. A baritone voice said behind me.

How I hate to tear my eyes from the romantic display of affection by the love birds but I had to. I needed to see where the negativity was from. I turned my gaze in its direction to see a man who seemed to be in his mid-thirties, wearing a red face cap, a blue shirt, and black jeans. I observed his facial features. He had small eyes, a sharp nose, big lips, and a beard. He didn't look like a bad guy.

“You should be happy for them,” I replied.

He chuckled.

“I am happy for them but the question remains if she would be able to stay when the wave of excitement, pleasure, and romance seems to dwindle into the ocean” came his reply.

“Why are you emphasizing on the lady alone?. It takes two to tangle. For marriage to work both parties needs to put in effort”.

He turned to me completely, keeping his phone inside the bag close to him.

“You talk like you don't know Nigerian girls. Of course, you would defend them cause you're one”

It was my turn to chuckle and face him completely.

“You talk like you don't know Nigerian men, of course, you would defend them cause you're one”.

He smiled broadly at me, revealing his gap tooth.

“How long couples last shouldn't be based on sex or nationality. It depends on the individuals involved. You should leave them to find that out themselves. They may last forever, who knows?”.

He stared at me like he was trying to figure out the kind of person I was, with a ghost of a smile appearing on his lips. I held his gaze urging him to say further.

“Evans” he introduced, stretching forth his hands for a handshake.

“Nora”

Surprisingly we continued the discussion but didn't end there. Seems like someone who could hold a conversation. Trust me, I love people who can hold a conversation. It irks me terribly to sit or converse with someone who finds it hard to hold a meaningful conversation for at least twenty minutes. The ones that annoy me most are those over chat that have nothing to say other than; hi, hey, xup, have you eaten? Etc every single day. We talked about business, politics, weather, sport, and so many other things.

He is a very nice person to keep around and I enjoyed his company. We parted ways not after exchanging contacts with him promising to give me a call later in the day.

💙💙💙💙

I wasn't even aware we had arrived at Omagwa airport until the pilot announced our arrival, I was asleep all through. Preye, my ex-coursemate and the main organizer of the get-together was already there waiting for me. We chatted all through the ride.

Here we are, parked outside, waiting for the gateman to open the blue gigantic gate. He did in no time and we drove in. It was a beauty to behold. Reminds me of a house at Banana Island. On the left side is a spacious garage with lines of expensive cars parked there. At this moment, I felt a pang of regret why up until now I haven't bought my car. Not like I don't have the funds. Besides the garage is a snooker spot. How fun can this place be?

A large swimming pool is located on the right with lots of flowers surrounding it. Some seats and a shield for relaxation. I like it here already. Being someone from a riverine area, I know how to swim so well. Is that a waterfall? My eyes widened in amazement. It was a molding of a lady half nude and a child in her hands, which seems like Mary and Jesus, but not particularly because Mary was never seen or mentioned naked. The water was gushing out from her eyes.

“Nora, c'mon, the others are waiting,” Preye said as he locked the car.

While we walked towards the White House, I felt goosebumps all over my body. The reason?.... I'm not sure.

A pretty fair lady opened the door and immediately wrapped her arms around Preye who reciprocated the gesture.

“Baby, is she Nora?” She asked.

Baby means she is his date or wife. How nice. They fit perfectly.

“Yes she is, isn't-”.

“Welcome!!!!.... I've heard so much about you” She didn't even let him finish speaking before letting go of him and rushing towards me. I was surprised and happy at her reaction.

“Thank you,” I said happily. It's gonna be an exciting Christmas after all.

“I'm Sofia” she introduced beaming with a smile. One I returned cheerfully.

Immediately we walked into the house, the loud laughter and cheering began to die down slowly, to my amazement. In no time, the room was as quiet as a graveyard, leaving me to wonder why.

Chapter 4

The stare from everyone was baffling, making me suddenly conscious of myself. I mentally began to assess my appearance again even though I knew I looked impeccable. I am dressed in a thigh-length floral blue gown, black heels, and a black Gucci handbag to compliment it. A simple dress if you ask me. My hair? It was beautifully done in a bridal gel style the previous day and my makeup? Simple but perfect. Oh…. I forgot to say I smelt so nice. Yes, I applied some oil perfume on my skin before I got out of the car. Smelling nice is part of fashion too if you must know. I smiled internally at myself. Kudos to me.

Then I began to take note of the faces staring at me, some I could recognize. The others I couldn't. One after the other I gazed at them with a smile on my face. And then, my eyes landed on a certain someone, his stare piercing into mine. The emotions it held I can't describe, the energy it eluded had me tearing my eyes off of his gray small ones in no time and focusing on the next person.

“Hi, everyone” Someone certainly had to put an end to the staring contest so I did. It's a relief to see that the population isn't as much as I had anticipated it to be. Great!!.

The reply wasn't bad. Some beamed with smiles while they welcomed me, the others, especially those who didn't know me, were casual with their reactions.

“Nora, na you be this? Omo!! See agbani that year dun large finish oh…” Kendra, who used to be our assistant course rep, said with so much disbelief. She is heavily pregnant, thus resulting in her laying on one of the huge cushions alone.

“You do BBL?” I couldn't help but chuckle at this question and how the others concurred with it

“Abeg oh, I didn't do anything” I defended lightly, whilst placing my boxes by the side and making myself comfortable on an empty seat

“Where have you been sef?” The one I recognize to be Emeka said, smiling so broadly.

“Yes oh. You didn't continue your HND with us, where did you do yours or did you do a direct entry to another a Uni?” Casmir asked. Casmir used to crush on me a lot those days.

“Guys, guys make una relax now. The babe just landed” Preye said, indirectly coming to my rescue.

“Preye you never see wetin we dey see?” Emeka attacked him. “Ah, you na married man. Thank God, leave the view for us way still dey search” he added laughing loudly afterward.

This got more reaction from the others. I just sat there laughing at their silly jokes. I was asked if I had a man, if not then a ring was coming my way. It's so funny seeing Emeka and Casmir, arguing about who would propose first.

We had a long chat from which I got to know the others better and what they are all into at the moment. We were all studying to be Surveyors but not many of us are in that sector. Emeka is into real estate, and Casmir is a businessman. Kendra is married and runs a big boutique, etc. Preye and his wife Sofia jointly run a company. Only Oscar and two other persons I couldn't recognize are Surveyors.

Talking about Oscar, he hasn't changed much so far, just got more handsome and taller. I got to know that the clingy lady by his side, is his girlfriend, the daughter of a business tycoon. Perfect combination. I mean, a son of a wealthy philanthropist, Professor, businessman, and a daughter of a business tycoon. A typical upper-class arrangement.

🖤🖤🖤🖤

Oscar's POV

It's been two days since the reunion began. It has been interesting all the way, at least to others. But to me, it all feels like a dream. I never would believe that I’d ever set my eyes on her ever again. Even though she has always been on my mind.

I didn't notice she had come in on the day of arrival until everywhere became quiet and then my eyes fell on her.

I felt a rush of multiple emotions all at once. Excitement, relief, hope, sadness, heartbreak, anger, hatred….. name it. I felt all of it. But amongst all, Confusion was the most dominant feeling. I had so many questions that I needed answers to, but only she had the answers.

I must confess, she's damn gorgeous and smelt like heaven, life must have been treating her well. We've spent only two days here and she has been avoidant towards me. She only greets and then avoids any other form of communication with me but doesn't with others. I guess that's how she wants it to be. But all I want are answers, I just want to know why she left without a goodbye. I want to know where she has been. I wonder if I'd ever get any.

“What do you plan to do?” Preye asked. We are both seated in the garden, at the back of the house. It's late already and everyone's asleep.

“About what?”

“Nora now. Which one be about what again?” He asked, obviously annoyed.

“Omo guy I don't know. I've thought about it over and over again. The part that annoys me the most is that she acts like I don't even exist, like-”

“You know that's how chicks are now….. Dem sabi form die. She's just forming. It's not like you want to continue the relationship or anything. This may be the only chance you'd get to know what happened”. I stared at him for a while, then picked up my glass of whiskey, and emptied it all into my throat.

“Nora is not forming Preye. She certainly does not want to have a conversation with me. It's as if she's trying very hard to stay clear from me and Amanda's part. I guess this part of her hasn't changed”.

“What do you mean?”. He asked, dropping his glass on the mini table.

“You act like you haven't noticed that Amanda has been trying consistently to step on her toes. Nora on the other hand knows why Amanda is acting all possessed and is trying her best to stay off my path to avoid drama” I explained.

“The side talks, unnecessary questions, and bad mouths…. All those are targeted at Nora and she knows why. Yes, I'm mad at her for how she left, and some part of me hates her for it, but I'm not stupid not to notice that she's trying her best to respect my relationship and herself”.

“I still dey wonder wetin you dey do with that Amanda ohh….. like, she doesn't even have manners. I've been telling you even before now. Let that girl go, na you know sha”

I sighed tiredly but said nothing.

“Look, I'm going in to join my lovely wife inside. Aren't you joining me?” Preye said standing to leave.

“Nah, I'm good….. will go in later”. Seeing Amanda right now is the last thing I want. I would rather stay out here and enjoy the free air nature has to offer.

I remained outside until it became extremely cold, and then I got up to leave but stopped when I heard a sound. At first, I wasn't sure whether to check but decided to. I paused on my track when I turned to the front of the compound to see Nora seated beside the pool, her laptop on her lap, some papers by the side, and a glass of wine.

I checked the time to see it was 1 am already. She is so engrossed in her work that she didn't even notice I have been standing over here watching her.

I couldn't even get myself to look or walk away. Even under the moonlight, she shines so bright. Radiating with elegance and tranquility.

She suddenly stopped typing, and swiftly turned her gaze in my direction, at this point my heart skipped a beat. Bleep!! I've been caught.

Chapter 5

Just when I thought I'd been caught, a smile formed on her face making me slightly confused. Nora would certainly not be smiling at me, not when it seems like I am creeping on her. The smile grew broader that it almost got to her ears. I can confidently say they aren't for me, and that's right. In no time, Casmir was walking up to her from the other direction.

Wait, why is he here by this time of the night?. The way they are both smiling at each other got me intrigued. Is something going on between them?.

He got to her and enveloped her in a big hug making me frown unconsciously. She playfully hit him on his arms while he faked being in pain. Really?. I can't describe how I feel right now, but I can certainly tell it's not a good feeling.

I stood watching as they both whispered softly while they gulped down some glass of wine. I never even realized there were two glasses, not until now.

In no time, Casmir was leading her to the snooker spot. Are they really going to play snooker at this time of the night?. What the Bleep is suddenly going on with this two?.

I don't know how long I've been standing here but I think it's time to leave, so I turned back, making sure not to make a single noise and went into the house from the back door.

Amanda was deep asleep when I walked in, perfect. Out there is a woman who hurt me terribly with her actions and here I am, feeling all worked up after seeing her with some other guy, why??.

I know why, she hurt me and she's out there living her best life and rubbing it on my face. She suddenly disappeared into thin air, she broke my heart yet she's the one avoiding me, interesting.I can literally feel the hate in me increasing by a multiple fold.

I slid into bed, shutting my eyes tightly while I forced myself not to think about what just happened. In no time, I drifted into an uncomfortable sleep.

💚💚💚💚

Nora's POV

I slowly opened my eyes to realize I was in a room. For the next few seconds I tried recollecting where I am and how I got to be here while my head aches so terribly. I looked around and realized I am in the room I shared with Kendra, silly me. But how did I get to be here?. The last thing I remembered was playing snooker with Casmir and…… what next?. I managed to sit up while rubbing my pounding head. Oh yeah, after the game we had another section of drinking and chatting, then…. I guess I fell asleep.

“Sleeping beauty is up”. Slowly I turned to meet Kendra. She just finished having her bath.

“Must be wondering how you got here?” I nodded like a lizard making her chuckle softly.

“Well, Casmir brought you in. I woke up to ease myself when I saw him carrying you in like a baby….. Awww, I suddenly started missing my husband…..” she paused.

One, two, three…… and more minutes have gone by and she's still quiet. Wait, are those tears I see?.

“Kendra are you crying?” a rather foolish question if you ask me cause obviously she is crying.

“Kendra?!” I'm shocked. What the Bleep.

“I want to go home to my husband….. I miss him sooo muchhhhhhhhhh”.

Is this pregnancy hormones or is Kendra just being funny right now. How do I deal with a terrible headache and a crying pregnant woman?!.

Before I could say 'cheese’, Kendra was already wailing like one who lost her husband.

“Kendra, Kendra please calm down okay, calm down”. See me see wahala oh, who send me last night kwanu?.

In no time, the door bursts open with the others rushing in with curiosity written all over their faces.

“What did you do to her?”. Amanda half yelled.

“And what makes you think I did something to her?”. I fired. What exactly is wrong with this girl?. Ever since I got here, she has been on my case.

“Then why is she crying?!”.

I hissed in return. The others are now begging Kendra to stop crying. While they kept asking what happened.

“Well…. I woke up and in no time, she walked in from the bathroom. She told me, Casmir was the one who brought me in last night while-”

“Casmir did?..... Wait, where una go?” Emeka asked sharply.

C'mon, what is wrong with this people?.

“Emeka you want make she start to dey explain where them go?. Wait make she talk finish jor” Ola, one of us countered.

I swallowed.

“She said he carried me in his arms like a baby and then bursted into tears, cause she misses her husband and wants him to carry her just like that”. The look on their faces did some justice to my headache, it was hilarious.

“So na only that thing make Kendra dey shout like that?. Na wa oh, I think say the pikin dun comot sef!” All eyes turned to Emeka in no time. How can he think such a thing?

“Guy which kin talk be that now?”

“You no hear how she dey shout for this kin early morning!”

In no time, the room became a market place, as everyone yelled. Some defending Emeka and blaming Kendra and the others sympathizing with Kendra while scolding Emeka for saying such a thing.

Kendra herself wasn't left out of the yelling, as she suddenly stopped crying and began defending herself, adjusting her towel from time to time.

“Stop!!!!” A rather fake high pitched voice shouted, making everyone go quiet.

“You guys should stop. The person to be blamed is Nora, not the innocent woman” really?. Sometimes I wonder where Oscar got this dumb girl from.

“How the hell am I responsible?” I asked, coming down from the bed to face her properly..

“If you hadn't been up all night, drinking, laughing and rubbing yourself all over Casmir like a slut that you are, then this rubbish wouldn't have happened….”

Did she just call me a slut?.

“..... You think I didn't see you guys?....” She now has a daring look on her face. “I did, by 3am I was up and I saw how you two were-”. A very hot slap suddenly stopped her from talking.

Everyone's eyes widened in shock, including herself.

“Nora, did you slap me?”

“I'll do that again if you open those gutter mouths of yours. I don't mind making it double”.

She scoffed in disbelief as she rubbed her cheeks which I'm sure is burning in pains right now.

She turned to Oscar.

“Won't you say anything?”.

My eyes darted towards him. He didn't look pleased by my actions but didn't mutter a word. Instead he walked away, pulling her along with him.

I walked away also, I think I need some air.

~~~~ Writer's POV
Oscar got to their room and shut the door.
“What in heaven's name was that about?” He asked, obviously pissed. “Answer me Amanda!!” He half yelled when he didn't get a reply.
“Don't raise your voice at me. Why don't you ask her? She dared slapped me and you did nothing”
“You deserve it”
“What?”
“Yes, you deserve that slap and even more. Any reasonable person would know that Kendra's actions are caused by pregnancy hormones. You are a nurse for crying out loud, you know this. But no….. you decided to use the opportunity to bully Nora”.
“Yeah…. Of course you would take her side. Your almighty ex”. She fired accusingly.
“This is not about her being my ex. This is about you being troublesome and unreasonable”.
Amanda suddenly started laughing, at first it wasn't loud but later she increased the volume then stopped abruptly.
“I see the way you look at her, you've never looked at me that way. Not even for once. Yes, you told me you weren't ready for a relationship but I thought you would fall for me as time went by….. it's two and half years already. Two fucking years and you still choose her over me”. Tears rolled down her eyes but she quickly wiped them off.
“I am not choosing anybody over anybody. Can you stop being overly dramatic?. I have told you countless times to stop picking on Nora but you wouldn't listen. You brought this one yourself” with this he walked out of the room, banging the door behind him.
Chapter 6
Nora remained seated by the side of the pool with her legs dipped inside while letting the fresh morning air graze her skin. She chuckled sadly remembering how her morning began.
“What an awful way to begin the day” she muttered to herself.
The sound of 'Black and Blue’ by Sia began to play disrupting her peaceful moment. Her eyes lazily looked over at her phone which laid close by to see it was Zainab calling. It's not gonna be a bad morning after all.
“Good morning Sunshine” Zainab's voice boomed over the phone.
“Sunshine for person way dun wake up since…. Fight one round join” she replied dryly, with a bored expression on her face
“Fight ke?, Boo, who you fight with?” Curious Zainab inquired hastily.
“Relax, you too like gist”.
“Talk jor….. wait let me guess, that unfortunate rebound girl?”
“I've told you to stop calling her that now, besides how do you know she's a rebound……”
“Madam leave that talk and give me gist. Me sef have a juicy gist for you”.
Nora explained everything that happened to her, not leaving a single part out of it.
“Ahhh!!! Why wasn't I there?. We for join hand beat that girl wetin no nice. I wonder who she think she is. I swear to-”
“Abeg abeg before you start to swear, what is your own juicy gist?” Nora cut in immediately.
“Na you dey do for her sef. I for just go kiss that her Bobo way dey shark her head for her front. Use this my juicy lips like this sulk em own, ah, by the time I kiss-”
“Zainab!, It's okay”
“Fine……”
“Well, Alhaji has agreed to buy me a house at lekki….”
Nora's eyes widened in amazement as she let out a loud scream.
“Ah baby girl, you dey run things ohh” she hailed, still wondering how her friend manages to get these big Alhajis to do her biddings.
Her laughter slowly died down when she saw Oscar walking towards her. He had a blank expression as he walked calmly, hands tucked into his pocket as he stared at nowhere other than her.
“Babe, let me call you back”.
He got to her and stopped, saying nothing for a while. She on the other hand remained quiet, staring at nothing in particular.
“Hey, how're you doing?” He asked.
“I'm okay”
“About this morning….. I apologize-”
“You don't have to, it's okay” she cut in sharply now staring into the pool.
He paused for a while, nodding his head all through.
“But that doesn't mean I'm pleased by your actions... I mean, you could have handled it without resorting to violence” he said, both hands in his pocket.
Nora scoffed. Giving a little laugh afterwards.
“I'd pretend I didn't hear that”
“Just like you pretend that everything is okay between us?” He asked, raising a brow quizzically.
“Look, I'm not having this conversation with you” she said as she got up to leave.
“Yeah, running as usual. I mean, that's what you know how to do best” this made her stop.
“Can't you see I'm trying to have a conversation with you?” He asked, almost appearing frustrated.
“Can't you see I don't want to have that particular conversation with you?. In Fact I do not want to have any conversation with you. Stay away from me….” she said almost like a warning and made to leave, but stopped.
“.....Your girlfriend too” with this she walked straight into the big mansion, leaving him to stare at her retreating figure.
Walking in, she met the others already seated on their favorite positions at the dining table.
“Nora…. I was about to come get you” Sonia said, flashing her a smile.
For the first time, the dining was quiet except for the sounds of cutleries and glasses. No one seems to be in the mood for chats and gist. It's obvious the early morning drama got to everyone.
“Everyone…..” Casmir called out the attention of the others just after breakfast. Sonia and Nora took it upon themselves to clear the table and wash the dishes afterwards while the rest made themselves comfortable in the spacious living room watching movies on Netflix.
“I think we should go out tonight” they all stared at him attentively. “I mean, it has been a very gloomy day and I don't like it. Let's party tonight”
No one said anything, they just stared like he was speaking the heavenly language. All of a sudden, Emeka got up.
“My gee!!, You see why I like you?. Swears oh. Since morning everybody just dey carry face up…..” he gives Casmir a handshake.
“I agree with Casmir and Emeka. I really need to dance off the bad energy hovering around me” Amanda added, laughing and whining.
“What then happens to me, I'm not carrying my precious baby to a party or club, how will I cope here alone”
The rest got thinking about Kendra's question. Someone certainly has to stay with her, especially after the little drama she acted in earlier.
“I…. I'll stay back with her. I have some work to do….” Nora said, coming out from the kitchen with some sliced apples for everyone.
They all took from it except Amanda rolled her eyes at the gesture. She seemed pleased to know that Nora won't be attending the party and didn't bother to hide her pleasure.
“Even though I'm not pleased with Nora not coming…… We will party tonight!!!” Emeka shouted while the others hailed in reply.
💚💚💚💚
Nora's POV
It's 10pm already and the others aren't yet back. Though I'm a little bit concerned, I prefer the tranquility their absence brings. Besides, I have enough time to look into the company's financial report without being distracted. Mrs Douglas had asked me to assume the role of an audit team leader as the previous one was guilty of fraud. A position most people desired and hated me for.
The integrity of the financial information emailed to me seems to be questionable, also contradicting the one I have been monitoring for a while now.
I picked up my phone and dialed a number. In a few seconds, it connected to the company's Chief financial officer.
I began with an apology for calling at this late hour. For some reason, he seems not to like me, so I wouldn't want my late hour call to be a reason for an argument tonight. What I'm about to talk to him about is very important and nothing must come in between the conversation.
I explained the issue to him, hoping to get some clarification but he claims that every information before me is accurate and there's nothing like a mistake or configuration and If there seems to be some mix or confusion, it's probably from my end.
How possible is that?. I have been very meticulous and attentive to every financial detail and activity going on in the company. Something is certainly not right and this raises my suspicions.
My heart suddenly skipped at the sound of a loud scream coming from one of the rooms. Who could possibly be screaming like…….
“Kendra?!”. Realization hit me hard as I quickly got up and rushed to the rooms. I had completely forgotten about her, very bad of me.
The sight before me had me freezing at the spot. There she laid on the cold tiles bleeding profusely while she cried out in pain. For the next few seconds, I couldn't get myself to move. How did this happen?My eyes caught sight of a stool by the side, was she trying to climb on it?
“Plea….seeee, help…”
“Oh my God, no, no ,no…” I panicked as I hurried towards her.
What do I do?. I tried to help her up but couldn't so I quickly rushed out and got my phone, dialing Casmir's number immediately. Why the Bleep isn't he answering?!!. This is so terrifying. I tried countless times to no avail, same as Preye.
I rushed out of the house, calling on the gateman like a lunatic. I couldn't even get myself to tell him the problem as I was trembling terribly. He smartly followed me inside the house.
“Ah madam, we need to rush am go hospital , oh. Call Oga”.
“Preye isn't picking up!!!”
“I mean Oga…. My Oga Oscar”. What is he talking about?.
“I do not have his contact”.
He rushed out while I rushed to Kendra.
“Nora…. Pleeeease, help… help….”
My eyes flooded with tears as I embraced her. I hope nothing happens to her and the baby. The sight of us soaked in her blood, freaked the living hell out of me.
There's no way to get a taxi on this estate, especially at the time of the night. Oscar now is our only savior.
The gateman returns after a little while.
“Make we carry her up” he instructed.
We both managed to carry her from the messy floor to the sofa, not minding if it gets stained by blood.
Dear Lord please, please send us help. Her eyes are now beginning to close, resulting in an increase in my heartbeat and profuse sweat rolling down my body.
“No, no, Kendra please open your eyes, please stay with me!!” I pleaded tearfully, holding unto her closely but my plea feel on deaf ears as her eyes finally closed.
Chapter 7
Oscar's POV
I was having a nice time at the party when my phone rang. My eyes widened at the sight of the name on the screen.
“Nora?” I scoffed in disbelief as I made my way outside. The place was blasting with loud music and the screams of drunk men and women vibing to it, one could barely hear another.
I kept asking myself so many questions as to why she would be calling me until I got to the parking lot and answered the call which kept ringing.
All I could hear at first was someone sobbing, raising my curiosity.
“Nora?” I called, guess she didn't know I had picked up the call.
“Oscar?…. Oscar please come back home… please, Kendra fell” I said amidst sobs.
Without wasting more time, I got out my car keys and sped off, not minding to tell the others. I'll do that later.
Kendra had already passed out before I got home. We quickly put her in the back seat and drove off. In no time we were at the hospital, thanks to the few vehicles on the way as it was almost midnight.
Immediately we got there, the nurses and doctors took over while I and Nora sat outside waiting.
She had lost a lot of blood and I feared for the baby. From what I know, her husband is outside the country and there's no way to reach out to him until she regains consciousness. I just hope everything turns out well.
Turning my eyes away from my phone, I got a glimpse of Nora, her head resting on her thighs as she sniffs from time to time. I looked closely to realize she was still trembling.
“Hey,” I called softly as I placed my hand on hers, making her look up at me. I was shocked to see her face all puffed up, eyes all red and watery.
“Hey, calm down okay, she'll be fine” I assured but she broke down in tears again.
“Will the baby be okay?” She asked, managing to wipe off the tears which rolled down freely.
“Yes, the ba-”
“Promise?” she cut in quickly, making me swallow the saliva that had formed in my mouth. I isn't sure but I can't tell her that. She looked at me with so much hope, and I can't afford to make her more broken than she already is.
“I promise” I replied, hoping and praying.
She nodded trustingly, wiping off her tears and trying to steady her breath. In no time, she slept off while I remained awake, watching to see when the doctor would come out.
It's been a long wait and the doctor isn't out yet. Just some nurses running out and in from time to time, making me very anxious and uncomfortable.
“No…. No, my baby… my baby…” My attention was drawn to Nora who was now talking in her sleep. She looked so restless, holding onto the seat tightly.
Her voice got louder in no time. I quickly moved closer to her.
“Nora, Nora”. She continued calling on ‘her baby’, I shook her continuously until she jerked up from her dream.
“Oscar, my baby!!.... Don't let me…” she suddenly stopped talking as realization hit her.
She was sweating so profusely and breathing hard.
“A… a bad dream,” she said nervously. What exactly is going on with her? I understand that it must have been a frightening experience for her earlier, but right now, I'm beginning to feel like there's more to this. I mean, she's overly concerned about the whole thing, or is it me reading more meaning into her display of emotions? To add up to the whole issue, she's now biting her fingers, something she does whenever she's anxious. I guess, habits never die.
“I guess, Kendra's situation got to me,” she said, giving a nervous laugh as she adjusted herself on the seat.
I nodded in agreement.
The doctor came out almost immediately.
“Are you her husband?”
“No, I'm not. But we are the closest people to her right now. Her husband is out of the country”. I replied. He looked like someone who wanted to say something very important.
“We’ve been able to stop the bleeding, and she's conscious now. She happened to have fallen hard on her belly. Falls that happen during the late second trimester and third trimester could be more harmful. That's especially true if you fall into your belle, or if you just put your belly on something during the fall. That kind of fall may cause contractions-”
“Doctor, summary, please. I don't like this suspense” I interrupted. All this explanation is annoying.
“The fall led to a premature labor, so we're getting ready to take her into the theater. We need someone to sign a consent form”.
“That's not a problem, lead the way”. I replied.
“Can we see her?” Nora asked as her eyes lit up with excitement.
“Sure you can”. I left with the doctor to sign the consent form, then went in to see her.
She was smiling weakly as she whispered inaudibly to Nora. She seemed pleased to see me there too. Thank God she's okay.
“My head hurts like hell” she complained, placing a hand on her head.
In a little while, the nurses came in to move her into the theater.
We waited outside, praying silently for a successful surgery. Thankfully, the doctor came out in fifty minutes to announce that the surgery was successful. Both mother and child are alive. The baby, which is a girl, was then taken into the newborn intensive care unit.
The happiness of I and Nora knew no bounds, we sang and praised the Lord as some nurses and patients joined in the celebration. She was moved back into the patient ward some minutes later.
💛💛💛💛
I opened my eyes to see it's morning already, I yearned tiredly as I stretched my body. A very uncomfortable sleep I must say. Nora was by my side sleeping peacefully.
“My guy!!!” That's Emeka's voice if I'm not mistaken. I got it right cause he and some others are now walking towards us.
I had called him right after the surgery to share the good news since the others weren't picking up.
“We dun get reunion baby ohh,” Ayo said cheerfully as he shook hands with me. Indeed, she is a reunion baby.
Nora woke up at the sound of our voices.
“Guys, good morning,” she said almost in a whisper.
“My Love… hope you slept well?”. Does Casmir always have to be like this? I thought we all were focused on the baby right now.
She only nodded, smiling tiredly.
“Omo, make una go house go baff. We gallant here” Emeka said, bringing my attention to our clothes which look rough and dirty.
“Yeah, I look a mess,” Nora replied, staring down at herself.
“Let's go”. I said as I made to leave.
“I'll get a cab”. Really?. I thought we were past this level.
“We are going to the same place”.
“I know”.
“Why do you have to be like this? You're enjoying this right?” I asked, getting angry all of a sudden.
“Enjoying what?”
Without saying another word. I grabbed her wrist and made for the door. Ignoring her resistance and not minding if the others were staring. Her stubbornness is driving me crazy.
I didn't let go until we got to my car. I opened it and sent her inside, shutting the door violently. I turned around and got in too.
“What in heaven's name is wrong with you?!. What was that for?” She yelled, throwing her hands up in the air, obviously pissed.
I didn't mutter a word. This got her infuriated as she ranted more, cursing and swearing. I ignored her. At some point, I turned the radio on, increasing the volume to the highest, singing along.
Immediately we drove in, she rushed out of the car, banging on the door. I watched as she stormed into the house like a soldier. I couldn't help but smile. She looks so adorable when angry.
I walked into the house after instructing the gateman to wash my car, only to see her and Amanda arguing. Oh, God!!. Come to think of it, Amanda didn't come with the others to the hospital.
Nora looks so furious, making me wonder what Amanda must have done this time or is it a case of transfer of aggression?
“Step out of my way!” Amanda demanded Nora be standing in her way, obstructing her from leaving the scene.
But the wounded tigress wouldn't concur.
“Nora, would you quit the drama? What is this about?” I asked. No amount of workload has stressed me the way these two ladies have, for the past few days. Can a day ever go by without one of them annoying me?
“Not until you ask your girlfriend what took her into my room” she replied adamantly.
The way she personalized the room, kind of made me happy.
I turned my eyes to Nora, giving her a quizzical look.
“Well… I, I….” Why does she look nervous?
“Baby I was simply looking for my phone. Yes, my phone”. She replied, smiling sheepishly.
“Inside her room?”
“Well… em, I can't remember where I kept it so I decided to search everywhere”.
“You can lie to your boyfriend but certainly not me…. I just hope nothing goes missing in there” Nora said with a threatening look before leaving.
I stared at Amanda, not knowing what to think. All I need right now is a cold bath and some food, not this drama. But why do I feel like she's up to something? I just hope she hasn't done something.
“I'll be waiting for you in the living room,” she said as she walked away.
I stood right there, this girl was up to something, something weird.
I made to climb upstairs where my room was but stopped by the call of the gateman. He said he had something to say. What I ended up hearing from him had me boiling in anger.
Chapter 8
Nora's POV
I laid on my back on the soft, big bed and took a moment to rest. My body aches so much, I think a massage will help. My mind wandered back to the time I woke up from my nightmare to see Oscar looking down at me. I wonder how much I must have blurted out. What if I had said something I wasn't supposed to say? He looked like he was trying to solve a puzzle, does he suspect anything? No, I don't think so.
Tiredly, I got up. My growling tummy tells me it's time to fill it up, and at the same time, my bowels pressing on me to be relieved. Omo, it's not easy to be a human oh. I mean, spirits, ghosts, and robots don't have to deal with all this stuff to exist.
I managed to drag my tired self out of the bed to the toilet. I entered to ease myself but ended up having a bath. I mean, it's more like double work to return here again to shower. It's better to do it all at once. Something I regretted a few minutes later, as my belly kept growling. I think the worms are done eating my intestines, they're headed for my kidney, lungs, or maybe my precious heart. I panicked unconsciously at the thought of it. Quickly, I rushed the bathing process, scrubbing some parts of my body and leaving the rest for God-knows-who.
Putting on a crop top and matching trousers, I rushed out of the room. Perfume and cream will come later. Right now I have to save my organs before the organ harvesters in me will cause havoc in there.
The house is unexpectedly quiet. Good for me then. I proceeded into the kitchen, what the Bleep!!. Ah, God. Dirty dishes lay on the sink smiling and waving at me. Don't ask me how I got to know this, when you're very hungry, you'll get to understand things that ordinarily you won't. I was about to get angry but caught myself on time. Adding anger to tiredness and hunger is suicide. I can't afford to put myself in such a state.
I walked to the sink and began to wash the dishes. After which I got ready to make jollof rice. Kendra needs to have her stomach filled up with some delicious yummy food on a beautiful Christmas morning….. Wait!!. Today is the twenty-fifth!! Ah, na wa oh. How is it possible for one to forget the well-known and celebrated Christmas day? Ah, I just hope Jesus forgives me oh, his birthday of all days. Happy birthday darling Jesus. Thank you for all you do.
I took my time to prepare this delicious meal right here. I cook very well, even better than Hilda Bassey. Argue all you want. I packaged the food in a big cooler, dishing Kendra's own in a separate cooler. Since everyone is at the hospital, we can eat there too. Don't say anything abeg, like this I don't have strength.
I'm ready to leave. Ah, how can I go like this now, Christmas day for that matter? I turned around and went into the room. Had a quick shower, arranged my hair, and applied some makeup and perfume. Shebi na me talk say na double work before? Confusion at its peak.
Omo, the rest were so happy to see me, and the coolers I carried along. Emeka did not even waste much time before bringing out the plates from the other bag I carried, telling me to dish his.
“Foodie!!!”
“Something must kill a man, na food and woman go kill me” he admitted, licking his lips seductively.
It's a private hospital so we had enough space and privacy. Sonia and Preye are here too, I heard they lodged at a hotel after the party, reason why they didn't return the previous day. I've not set my eyes on Amanda since I got in. Then Oscar was seated at the end of the curved cushion. I wonder when they both left the house. He doesn't seem cheerful at all, more like he's angry about something. I contemplated whether to serve him or not. Like this, I don't have the strength to fight with anyone so I decided to mind my business, but…. It would be very unfair, everyone is eating. Well, since I've already decided to play the role of Mother Teresa today, let me finish what I started. I got a plate and dished for him.
“Oscar…. You should eat” I said, appearing in front of him.
“Take it,” I said when he kept staring at me, saying or doing nothing. He did take the food.
Mother Teresa's role, is done and dusted. I heaved a sigh of relief as I walked back.
As usual, we are happily eating, gisting and laughing. All thanks to Emeka who doesn't run out of something funny to say.
~~~~

We all remained there until evening. I must say, this is the best Christmas celebration I've had in the past six years.

One by one our attention was drawn to the door, which opened slowly and Amanda walked in briskly.

“Hi, everyone. Sorry, I'm late” I said with a fake smile plastered on her face. Don't ask me how I know.

“Ah ah, where have you been now?” Ayo asked, still picking his teeth with the toothpick.

“Was looking for something-”

“This?” We all turned to Oscar, who had a phone held up.

“Ye…. Yeah, where did you see it?” She asked nervously.

“Adamu gave it to me”.

“Oh… that's so lovely. I'll thank him when I get home. Thank you baby”.

Why does Oscar look like he wants to rip her apart?

“He said he found it in Nora's room, ringing continuously….. there's no point getting agitated, just tell us how it got there”. He's pissed.

“I don't know. I really can't tell… maybe you should ask Nora. I mean… I searched for it everywhere”.

“What?. You better don't start with me. What is even wrong with this girl?” I wondered.

“Explain how my phone got to”

“Nora!!!!” Oscar yelled. He looked pissed, annoyed, and angry as he stared at her with an unimpressed glare.

He got out his phone, and in a little while a record was playing.

My eyes widened in shock to hear the gateman, explaining how he saw Amanda from the window, keeping something at the top of the wardrobe then pouring some liquid on the stool beside it.

The room was quiet for a while as everyone was left to get the point of the record.

“Amanda, you did this to me..” Kendra said, still in shock. “Why…. What did I ever do to you?”

“I was in the room when a phone began to ring. It wasn't mine and I knew it wasn't Nora's too cause I knew her ringing tone, I was so curious to know how owned the phone and how it got to be there. Without giving it a thought, I climbed the stool that almost sent me to my Waterloo. I slipped immediately…..” Kendra narrated, glaring daggers at the culprit.

“Kendra… Please, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for this to happen…” A thunderous slap landed on her face, shutting her up immediately. When did Kendra leave the bed? How she got to her in no time is still a wonder to me.

“Kendra I'm sorry….. it wasn't even planned for you” Amanda cried out, still holding the spot she had been slapped.

I folded my arms beneath my chest watching the drama displaying before me. It feels like a movie, maybe a Zee World series.

“You had it planned for Nora right? What is wrong with you Amanda?!” Sonia scolded, obviously disappointed.

“I've had enough of your excesses. I need you to go back, get your things, and leave” She gasped on hearing such words from Oscar, her eyes watered the more.

“Baby please, I'm sorry” she pleaded, making a move towards him.

“You better do as I say, else I'll call the police”.

“Girls Sha… na wa oo”

“Amanda you went too far this time, why did-”

“You all want to know why?” She suddenly asked. Cutting off Preye while she forcefully wiped off the tears on her face. I watched in silence, too exhausted to join.

“It drives me crazy to know that I am not good enough. To know that you'd choose her over and over again, even after she left you….” She paused and made herself comfortable on a seat.

“Did you guys know that my beloved boyfriend here, organized this whole get-together so he could see his ex?” She asked searching our faces one by one.

“What?, What do you mean?” I asked even before I knew it. “Preye organized….”

“You think so because they made you think so,” she said pointing at Preye, Sonia, and Oscar.

This is the point I'd say I'm lost. From the look on the other's faces, I can tell they are too.

Amanda suddenly began laughing.

“That house? It belongs to Oscar, but he never mentioned it to me” she said loudly, turning to him now.

“You think I didn't know? I know everything. I agreed to be here so I could see for myself the woman who had me fighting for your love, the one with the key to your heart. I was curious, I wanted to see what she looked like, what she had that I did not have….. I-”

“Come here” At this point, Oscar was already pulling her out.

Chapter 9

The room was drop dead silent after they both exited the door. From the looks on everyone's face it's obvious they all had something to say but preferred to keep it to themselves. My thoughts went to the other day when the gateman mentioned him as his 'oga’. I never gave it a thought, not until now. To think that he went this far for me even after many years makes me feel like shit. I never would have imagined. The urge to reach out to him suddenly envelops me but I fear if he would even want that. Not after how impossible I made it for him to have a conversation with me, or after the messy break up that just happened here.

I can feel my anxiety building up massively in me. I think I need some air, which led me to leave the room.

I got to a quiet place and had my butts seated on the bare grass which was neatly cut. I didn't plan or wish for any of this. The emotions I feel right now, are those I've been avoiding for a while now. You may call me stupid but that's it. I had just planned to come here to mingle and have fun, without raising up any dust from my past. But with everything that has happened, that plan is impossible to accomplish.

“Mind if I join you?” Casmir stood behind me. He must have followed me out. He made himself comfortable beside me even before I could give a reply. One I don't think I'd give anyways.

We sat in silence, just the sound of birds chirping happily. How I admire them. They don't have to deal with all this emotional baggage like us. Just eat, sing, reproduce and sleep.

“I guess I no longer have a chance”

“Huh?” I think I didn't hear him right, not when my mind is fixed on other things.

Casmir smiled sadly. The look of defeat was slightly evident on his face. He took my hands into his, looking deep into my eyes.

“I really thought I would have a chance with you. Something I've always wanted from the first day I saw you at the school library….” He chuckled softly. “..... But, I think what had stood as an obstacle will still stand this time”.

I held onto his gaze, searching his eyes. His sincerity aching my heart. I believed that time changes things but I guess I'm wrong. The person right here still looks at me the way he did some years ago. Does this mean feelings never change?

“It's obvious the feelings both of you have for each other, hasn't changed one bit”. Did he perhaps read my mind?

I swallowed.

“Look, it's not what you think, okay. I and Oscar's just have unresolved-”

His unexpected sarcastic laughter had me stopping abruptly.

“Just stop living in denial okay. You still feel something for him. Look at you”, he had a ghost of a smile on.

“I agree I have lots of emotions lingering in me, but I won't say I still have feelings for Oscar. C'mon, No!”

“Oscar is a good guy, don't let shakara make you lose him” with a pat on my shoulders, he left me to be on my own.

~~~~
By the time I got back to the ward, they'd all gone back except Casmir, Preye and Sonia. They were in the middle of a conversation when I walked in.
I told them I need to go back and rest. Well, Preye offered to drop me, along with Sonia, while Casmir remained with Kendra. They were able to contact her husband who has assured us to be here in no time.
The drive back home was serene as expected. The couples exchange glances at each other from time to time. More like they were communicating in a way I can't understand. Not like I even care to understand, especially in the state of mind.
Emeka had packed his belongings and left before we got there. I heard he was upset that Oscar had made him leave his life at Delta State to come over here in the name of a reunion with an ulterior motive. I don't even want to think about it. I do not want to think about anybody and their decisions. All I care about right now is meeting Oscar….. My conscience is dealing with me terribly and if I don't clear it, I may have a panic attack.
I first had a cold bath then proceeded to his room.
I hesitated a little before knocking on the large door before me. My heart was racing suddenly. I had a faint come in before turning the doorknob and stepping my foot inside.
The interior is nothing compared to the other rooms. The others looked awesome, but this right here is impeccably gorgeous. He has always had an eye for quality and stylish things.
“Leave” my spirit almost jerked out of my body on her cold unexpected reply from an unknown direction. I didn't realize he was standing by the window all this while.
“You startled me” I blurted.
“Nora leave”, his voice was firm and void of any emotions. The look on his face was that one one who meant serious business.
I paused for a while, contemplating whether to heed his instructions or not.
“I just want to”
“Get the hell outta my room!!” He yelled, eyes burning in intense anger.
I know you would be saying that serves me right, right? I agree with you. Why do I suddenly feel the urge to cry? I mean, he is just angry at the moment, I shouldn't let it get to me. But deep down within me, I'm hurt by his outburst. I guess the drama has gotten to a whole new dimension.
I took myself out of the room and headed straight to mine. I feel like a knife has been sent straight to my heart.
Chapter 10
I woke up to the ringing of my phone. It's a bright Friday morning. Funny how stressed I still feel even after having a long period of sleep.
Mmmm, Zainab.
I threw the phone back on the bed, certainly not in the mood to talk. If someone had told me that a day would come when I wouldn't want to take a call from not just anyone but Zainab, I would have laughed in the person's face. Zainab is a vibe giver. I guess, it's not every moment someone wants such vibes, there are moments too when one just needs to be left to their thoughts. Not everything is meant to be 'cruise’. She did nothing wrong but I just don't feel like talking to anyone.
But then, I still need to talk to God, even though for a minute. I mean, he's not the cause of my problems, but rather a help in time of need. So I bowed my head in prayer. I should have just let go of the prayer cause I kept rambling and murmuring things I didn't even understand, repeating them continuously in an attempt to say something that made sense. Confusion at its peak. May God have mercy on me.
Slipping my foot into my big palm slippers, I managed to drag myself to the bathroom to freshen up.
It's been three days since the drama. Ayo left two days ago, claiming that the whole fun at the gathering had been ruined. Casmir left yesterday and said he had an emergency. The house feels empty though Preye and his wife are still around. Same as Oscar. Kendra is still at the hospital, her husband arrived as promised and she will soon be discharged. She named her little princess after me. I was filled with Joy when she announced our reunion baby's name is Nora. For me, I'm hoping to leave soon, but that's after I've been able to speak to Oscar and take away the large burden placed on me.
It hasn't been easy trying to get him to talk to me. He's barely around these days and when he is, he's either having a good time with Preye, in a Zoom meeting, or at the hospital. Most nights, I'd stay up until he returned just to speak with him, but he wouldn't even spare me a glance. The thought of getting my things and leaving like the rest kept coming into my mind but that would be foolish of me, right?
Sonia on the other hand has been very supportive.
“He's just upset, he'll come around” she would always say, whenever my attempt to talk to him fails.
One of the nights, we both sat by the pool and she had narrated to me how my sudden disappearance had hurt him terribly. Then she had just started dating Preye. Since Preye and Oscar had been best friends, she had to get acquainted with him too. I could imagine how emotionally unbearable it was for him. She inquired why I left but I said nothing to her. Oscar deserves to know first, before any other person.
I got out of the bathroom and dressed up. The thought of leaving the room scares me. What if I come across him? Of course, he would snub me as usual, and that hits on my pride. The fact that I get all emotional when he does this terrifies me.
I find myself wanting to be close to him, needing his attention and forgiveness like my life depends on it, and this scares the living daylight out of me. How did I get here? I wasn't like this when I arrived, this is so crazy and it's messing with my mental health.
🤍🤍🤍🤍
Oscar's POV
I've been working here at the living for a long period now but had to stop, on the call of my kid sister Christabel. A video call from her means it's gonna be a long conversation.
“Big bro!!!!!!” Excitement is the perfect word for her current state. I smiled broadly, shaking my head slowly. Crazy girl.
“How are you doing?” I asked, temporarily removing my eyes from her to access her room. “Where's your twin sister Annabel?” I asked, seeing she was nowhere visible.
“I don't know. Can you imagine Annable got herself a teddy of ninety thousand naira, is she a baby?”
“What?!. Why?” By now I'm not supposed to be surprised at the extravagant spending of these girls, but this is just out of it.
“Loudmouth, must you tell?” Here comes the queen, appearing on the screen. Rolling her eyes at her sister in annoyance. While Christabel smirked in satisfaction.
“Anna, what did Chris just say now? I mean, you have lots of teddy tears, what is it with wasting money besides you're no longer a teenager”
“Big bro, hope she told you how she spent a hundred and fifty thousand on aa
“You know what, it's enough” she kept quiet, glaring maliciously at her other twin.
“You girls can't go about spending money like it's nothing, okay? You should learn to save and invest”
“Dad gives us lots of money. You do too, same with Mom and Grandma and-”
“Chris you will not interrupt me while I speak” I scolded. These girls are just something else.
“C'mon big bro….. You know we're your only siblings and spending money makes us happy. You should let us be happy” Anna whined, making a puppy face with Christable joining her. I couldn't help but smile at their cute faces.
Not like there's anything I can do. They'll still go ahead and do what they want, all thanks to my dad who raised them like some golden eggs.
“When are you guys going back to school?” I asked, taking a look at my wristwatch. I have a meeting in the next one hour and wouldn't want to be late.
I looked back at the screen to see them wearing a boring look.
“In a week time”, Annable replied dryly
“Okay ladies, I have to
“Who's that?” Christabel asked curiously, pointing at me.
“Who's….” I turned to see Nora walking into the kitchen. “It's no one”.
“No one and she's on a bum shorts and a crop top. Looks sexy to me…” she scoffed.
I pretended not to hear her.
“I have to go, ladies, enjoy-”
“Please, will you send us some money?” Interruption again?!!
“What money?”
“Like….. a hundred and fifty thou-”
“Madam, leave my screen, please. Bye” With a tone of finality I ended the call. These girls never get tired of money. Jesus Christ!!!.
“Why you cut them off like that now” Preye asked amusingly, sitting beside me.
“Omo ehh. These girls tire me. Make them finish school go join the family businessdayy earn their own money” I said, slightly annoyed.
“Free them jor… make them enjoy the benefit of coming from a rich home. No be people like me way struggle before we make am….. My kids will suffer no shit. They will get any and everything they ask for” he said proudly.
“You better don't spoil your kids oh. Well, I trust Sonia to make a good mother. No beabouti like you”. I said, hissing afterward.
While having a little chat with him. Nora and Sonia came to let us know breakfast was ready but I declined. I'm not interested. I decided it was time to go get ready
Chapter 11
I scanned the room for the tenth time, making sure I have no belongings left. Smiling in satisfaction, I dragged my boxes out. Kendra who was discharged the previous day had left with her husband and today, I'm about doing the same.
A sharp strike of lightning and the sound of thunderstorms roared outside. Really?. Na wa ohhh, some parts of the country are still experiencing serious harmattan and here is Port Harcourt warming up for a rainfall.
Mtcheew!!!
I'm leaving anyway, whether the weather likes it or not. By fire by brimstone. I mean, there's obviously no reason why I should still be here, the party is over, it's not even like Oscar wants to see me. Or, is it until he throws me out himself?. God knows I've tried my best, I can't come and kill myself ontop man matter.
Preye and Sonia haven't left yet but will certainly do. These days, they prefer to stay locked up in the room.
Omo!! Boredom dun finish me. Oya to your tent oh Nora.
I paused on remembering it's about to rain. So? Just because it's rainy on your way to the airport doesn't mean it's going to be a rough flight. Besides, thousands of aircrafts across the world operate through rain and snow without any air crash reported. Regulatory institutions all over the world also have strict rules and regulations that guide flights during harsh weather conditions and for which airlines are bound to obey or risk sanctions.
I smiled at how knowledgeable I am, a sense of pride swelling up my head. On a second thought, na 9ja I dey oh, nothing way no fit happen.
I rolled my eyes internally, hissing afterwards.
Well, if I'm able to get to the airport and remain on the ground prior to any boarding and take off, that will be good. After all, the air traffic controllers will not clear an aircraft for take off if the weather conditions are dangerous. Las Las, na to delay the flight. I kuku find one hotel lodge. Better than staying here all alone.
My ride was already waiting for me by the time I got outside. The driver rushed out to help me get my stuff in, immediately he saw me. A perfect gentleman. Not all those harsh bolt drivers at Lagos.
“If you no ready to put your stuff inside, that one concern you. Who come this world come do boy for another person” one of them had told me some months ago, with a serious face. I had to drag the plenty of foodstuffs I had bought that day all by myself into the boot. I begin to wonder what differentiates them from the regular taxi driver.
I made sure to give him no star.
With everything in, we are set to leave. The driver reversed and drove to the gate. The gate man was seated outside but made no move to get up, talk more of opening the gate. He felt so relaxed as he stared directly at us.
“Please open the gate” I said warmly.
“My Oga say make I no open gate”.
Is this some sort of a prank?. He let the driver in, so what's this all about?.
I concluded it wasn't a joke as he kept a straight face. What the hell?.
“What do you mean, aren't I allowed to leave?” I asked. This is shocking, the look on my driver's face tells me he thinks so too.
“Madam, my Oga talk say make I no open gate” the tone of finality evident in his voice as he looked away unbothered.
The man seated close to me looked like someone who now has something to say but just decided to be quiet. The weather on the other hand keeps threatening to do what it knows how to do best
I got down from the car, not knowing what to do, this is becoming distressing.
It's obvious Oscar is out to frustrate me, I mean, what sort of silly order is this na?. Am I his prisoner?.
“Madam if the waka no go work out tell me na. See rain wan fall and I get person to-”
“Oga abeg no vex, just give me small time”. My plea was able to calm the angry looking man for a while, cause I'm sure if nothing happens soon, he will explode. Something I don't want.
I got out my phone out, dialing Oscar's number, I got a busy reply. My eyes wandered to the gateman to see he was on a call. Is it possible Oscar is the one he's speaking with?.
“Madam e be like say you no dey serious. Shebi na like this I go take feed my family?. Mtcheew!!” The driver is already out, dragging my belongings out of his boot angrily.
Ewoooo…. We dun comot for gentleman mode, enter street mode. Odikwa very serious.
I just remained quiet and let him do his wish, before person go change am for me.
“Come mumu open that gate make I comot here jor!!” He fired at the gateman. Wahala.
To my amazement he opened the gate…
“Come adamu or whatever your name is. So you open gate make em drive enter ba, when em wan carry me comot na em you know say your Oga talk say make you no open gate?. Now too, you still open gate for am. Which kin yeye play be this now!!”
The gateman still sat unbothered.
Alright now, no wahala.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
I remained outside until 1pm, replaying everything that had just happened in my head. It feels like a dream to me. The human being remained in his position so relaxed, glancing at me from time to time. I thought of calling Preye but decided not to. What's the point anyways.
In a little while, a car honked. I quickly got up from where I was seated by the side of the pool, eager to see who it was.
A blue Range Rover drove in, with loud music blasting from it . The anger in me rose by a hundred degrees, as I stared at the only person responsible for my distress.
He got out of the car, dressed in a white senator, shiny black shoes to compliment and a black shade. He looked so handsome and….. Am I seriously checking him out?!. Oh God.
“What is the meaning of this rubbish stunt you just pulled?” I asked immediately he got down from the car.
If he heard anything, he didn't show it as he walked past me, slapping me hard with his heavenly alluring fragrance.
“Oscar, I'm talking to you?!” I yelled after him. He continued his walk without a flinch.
“Oscar!!”
“Can't you see I don't want to have that particular conversation with you?. In Fact I do not want to have any conversation with you. Stay away from me….” he said more like a warning as he continued walking.
Why does this sound so familiar?...... My mouth suddenly opened on realizing he just used my own words on me.
I rushed after him, standing at his front while spreading my arms wide open in an attempt to cover the large space remaining.
He paused and took his shade off, a blank expression on his face.
“You are throwing yourself at me. Stop it, it's irritating”
I whipped my head around so fast that I could have sworn I heard it crack. My eyes widening at how cocky and bold he is to say such to me. My arms suddenly got weak as I slowly laid them down to my side.
“You are just a miserable asshole, that is what you are” I spat venomously.
He stepped even closer so that we can now face each other, a smirk on his face.
“Proudly an asshole” he said, as he turned away from me, walking into the house triumphantly.
I still can't believe this. Look at how calm and collected he is, while I'm here, all worked up and frustrated. What sort of rubbish is this?.
Jeez!! I angrily grabbed my wig, dragging it out of my head in annoyance.
Few minutes after he had disappeared into the house, came a heavy downpour.
Call it showers of blessings cause it helped calm my nerves.
Chapter 12
I stood in front of a large mirror. An image staring back at me. She looked different, extremely beautiful and sophisticated. Her hair was beautifully made by an international stylist and adorned with a diamond crown, her make up was simple yet perfect. A beautiful diamond ring laid comfortably in her manicured finger. And she was dressed in a Cinderella-like wedding dress making me wonder if she was some sort of Disney princess. She was a beauty to behold. She had just gotten married, in other words, I've just gotten married. I smiled broadly, still staring at my beautiful self…….
“Nora”
I turned my eyes away from the mirror but couldn't find who called my name.
And why does it sound so close?
“Nora, wake up!”
My eyes suddenly snapped open like a fire spark from two stones scratched against each other during the stone age.
So all that was a dream?. The glamor, beauty and everything is all a dream?!!.
I contemplated whether to pray for, or against the dream. From what I know, getting married in the dream is demonic…. That's what my grandma and the older women would always have us believe. Just like eating in the dream. But ehh, this dream is too beautiful to cast and bind oh, ah!!! I'm sure if they had served me some food, I would have eaten all of it, probably use my tongue to lick the plate, that's if the food is delicious.
“Madam, why are you smiling?” I had totally forgotten about the intruder.
I looked up, slightly irritated to see Sonia mopping at me. Why does she have a weird look on her face?
“Good morning” My grumpy voice comes out almost in a whisper.
“At midnight you were sweating profusely in such cold weather, while your temperature almost burnt the duvet. Now, you're sleeping and smiling like a cow. Do you need to see the doctor?” Is that a question or a suggestion?
“What…. What midnight?” I inquired, peeping into her shiny eyes.
She looked at me like I've grown seven heads.
“What happened at midnight?” I asked, now trying to sound casual and relaxed.
“Well, I had a fight with Preye late in the night and decided I didn't want to share the room with him, for the moment… so I went and laid in the living room only to see Oscar coming out of your room, rushing to the kitchen and rushing back in with a towel and a bowel…. I just had to follow him”. She paused.
What happens to going straight to the point? And why would she pause at the moment when my curiosity has gotten to its highest point.
“Eeehhhh??” I urged her to continue, while I pushed the duvet away.
“You were talking in your sleep….. No, you were having a nightmare and had a fever”. She placed her palm on my forehead.
How come I don't seem to remember?. Does that mean this recent dream is nothing but a post fever symptom?.
“Oscar had your body dapped with the towel until you fell back asleep”
This got me laughing seriously, I laughed so much that tears began to roll down my eyes. This here is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a while. Maybe this is just another dream.
“What’s funny?”
“I can actually believe I had that dream, nightmare…. Whatever. But I can also swearrrrrr……” I stressed the 'swear’ so much that my throat became itchy.
“......Oscar didn't even come close to me. That little boy in a grown man’s body would prefer to stand and watch my temperature burn down the building rather than help me out. He is a terrible asshole. I mean, if he don't want to talk to me or see me, why don't he just let me go…..” I ranted.
“Am I his property?What sort of immaturity is that….”my rants went on and on and on….
Why does she have to mention his name? The thought of what he did the previous day suddenly replaced the memory of my beautiful post fever symptom.
I was drenched by the rain all because of that jerk. You better don't ask me how it was his fault, especially not after the stunt he pulled. I stood there because I was upset, mad, crazy…. Name it. And he's the reason behind those feelings. That automatically makes him the reason I was drenched.
On the other hand, I did enjoy the shower. It felt good, making me remember the good old days as kids, running around the neighborhood only in oversized pants, under the rain. Some of the pants have been terribly redesigned with needle and thread, yet they were still worn as there's no plan of disposing them. Infact, oversized pants were trending as it was assumed that we would grow up with them and with time, they would fit perfectly.
Not until Cold came knocking. I had to grab my boxes which took part in the shower and rush inside, removed my clothes, had a hot bath and curled into bed like a millipede.
“Madam are you done?. Oscar is this, Oscar is that…. See as you dey swell like garri way Dem soak for water. Shey if you see gun now you go fit shot am”
I looked away from her, blinking my lashes continuously, while I tried to steady my breath. Oscar has me feeling like this, everything is all because of that jerk!! All because of him.
“Look at your clothes, littered all over the place……. Why are your boxes wet?” She's now carrying one of my empty boxes in her hands. Holding it like it was a piece of trash.
Someone should please tell Sonia to leave me alone now….
I exhaled tiredly, I think I might have a headache if this conversation keeps going.
“It was drenched by the rain….. please no more questions, I'm tired” I added the last part when she opened her mouth to speak again.
Which kind of early morning wahala be this?.
🤎🤎🤎🤎
Oscar's POV
I had gone for a friend's traditional marriage when my gateman called to inform me that Nora's about to leave. I immediately ordered him to make sure the vehicle didn't leave with her. Her purpose of coming hasn't been accomplished yet. I call the shots now, her time of reign is over.
You can judge me all you want but I don't care. She needs to have a taste of her own medicine. After all, first to do, nedey pain. Second to do na em dey pain pass.
Do you know what it took me to get her here?. Let me tell you how it all began. Preye had called me up one of the days, showing me a group picture. He said, one of the person's there is a distant relation who is based at Lagos. But he thinks the lady in the red gown is my ex. Some part of me wanted to believe him, while the other didn't….. Nora has been gone for years, all attempts to find her were unsuccessful.
I looked at the picture…. There's a striking resemblance but I still did not believe it. So, Preye asked for my permission to investigate who the lady was. I gave him a go-ahead. After some days, he returned with some evidence proving she's the Nora I've been looking for. That was when I brought up the reunion idea. Making available every resource needed for it to be a success but made Preye take all the credit. She may not want to come if she knows I'm the main planner, besides I didn't want to be the center of attention in my own story, something Amanda didn't let happen.
This reunion alone has cost me so much money, as I made every necessary thing available for everybody….. at least to compensate them for making them an add-up in the story.
And all I get in return is frustration and stress from the same person I had done all this for….. Well, I must confess, her drama and actions have been interesting so far. It challenges me, only God knows how long I've been yearning for a Chase. I mean, I'm used to women flocking around me…. Throwing themselves at me without me stressing. Even the ones I never expect to do so. It's as if they lose their senses whenever they see me. That's too boring. Nora here, did spice up my life.
You needed to see her yesterday, she looked like she could rip me apart and have the birds feed on my body. It was really hilarious but I made sure not to laugh. No woman has ever had me feeling this way. If I give her chance she fit even beat me sef…… Nora!!. Well, I have no plans of hurting her, just want to make her feel a little of the frustration I felt.
I almost regretted my actions when I heard her voice in the middle of the night. At first, I wanted to act like I didn't notice anything and move on, but hearing “my baby” had me dragging my feet into her room. The door was surprisingly opened giving me access. Just like the other time, she was sweating profusely, holding unto the sheets so tightly while breathing heavily. She was clothed in a thick hoodie making me conclude she must have been very cold before now.
I made it close to her, attempting to wake her up but paused when my hand touched her skin. It was so hot. I quickly placed it on her forehead…. Omo! She was burning. I quickly rushed out to get water and a towel. I spent so much time trying to calm her temperature. All the while I did this, she never opened her eyes, only her whispering and breathing hard.
“Kendra’s accident still terrifies her?” I said to Sonia, attempting to distract her even though I suspect this reoccurring nightmare isn't all about Kendra, there's more to this.
“Oh…. Chai. No wonder Kendra kept thanking her. She must have been really, really terrified” I think Sonia bought it, cause she had a sympathetic look on her face.
After some time, she became relaxed…. Her temperature went down and we left.
Odougwu like me dun suddenly turn caregiver, because of woman…. Wahala!.
