The 10 Foods To Take Along While On A Journey by Flusio: 5:15pm On Dec 28, 2023 |
Long journeys can be an interesting adventure or just boring depending on your mood. It’s even worse when you are hungry and can’t find anything to buy on the road. To avoid such problems when traveling, it’s better to pack light meals when you are on a long journey. We have listed 10 foods to take along while on a journey. 1. Plantain chips One of the foods to take along when traveling is plantain chips. While there is the possibility of buying them on the road, you should buy them before leaving the park. There are two reasons for this: It’s more expensive on the expressway. The seller might not have your balance (the driver will not wait for you). Pack a dozen plantain chips in your small bag—too much along the way. They don’t occupy space, are great, and are very delicious. These plantain chips provide 5.2 grams of fiber, which is great for your health. Also, this food is nice for those who want to control their cholesterol and blood sugar. It is also affordable, and about 6–10 hours will take you through a 10-hour journey. It is also great for people who don’t want to experience stomach aches or go to the toilet while traveling. 2. Potato Chips Another popular food you can take along while traveling is potato chips. You can prepare potato chips at home. With just 2,000 and 3,000 naira, you will get a potato chip that will take you on your journey. These potatoes are a great source of protein, vitamins, and potassium. You will need to get a bottle of water if you are taking potatoes and chips because it does dry the mouth. However, it will keep your stomach filled until you have a proper meal when you get home. For packaging, you can stick them in your pockets or the side parts of a traveling bag. 3. Fruits Fruits are one of the best foods to take along while on a journey. Fruits have many benefits they offer people. However, when taking fruits, ensure you avoid fruits like: Pineapple Cashew Mango Guava African Star Apple (Agbalumo) These fruits have excellent nutrients, but they come with certain drawbacks for travelers. Pineapple can make you want to defecate on your journey, which might inconvenience you and other travelers. Mangoes and cashews ooze so much water, which might be close to you. You might ask not to have a place to dispose of them. The same applies to guava and Agbalumo, which might cause stomach upset. If you want to travel, here are the recommended fruits: Oranges Water Melon Imported Apple Coconut Pear Garden Egg These are easily disposable fruits and will keep away hunger pangs. 4. Groundnuts and Popcorn Groundnuts and popcorn are other combinations you should consider when traveling on a journey. The benefits of these foods are enormous, and they can be a good companion for you on your journey. You can get a bottle of groundnut and popcorn at the mall. Like most snacks, ensure you take a bottle of water after ingestion of this food. While it won’t keep hunger away permanently, it will keep your stomach occupied till your journey elapses. 5. African Walnuts Foods to Take Along While on a Journey African walnuts, popularly known as Asala or ahusa, are one of the foods to take along while on a journey. Walnuts are one of the most healthy foods anyone can eat. Just six walnuts will keep your stomach full for 10 hours. These walnuts sell for around 200, 500, and 1,000 naira, respectively. However, ensure you check this walnut because some might have gone bad. 6. Suya Suya remains one of the most popular street foods in Nigeria. When traveling, Suya offers flavors that will whet your appetite. This Nigerian food is made from barbecue beef, chicken, or any protein. Preparing this food depends on individuals, but for many, it is infused with many spices that make it edible. Most suyas are prepared with onions, cabbage, and tomatoes. These days, you can find well-dried Suya in Shoprite and other malls. They are a good source of protein for people who are going on a journey. Suya is affordable, but it depends on the quantity you want. What makes it ideal is that it is easy to preserve and can last several weeks before it loses taste. Suya comes in small packs, so they can be inserted into your backpack for easy carriage. 7. Roasted Plantains (Boli) When thinking of foods to take along while on a journey, boli is an ideal choice. If you stay in Lagos or any of the southeast states, this is a common street food among many Nigerians. Boli is roasted plantain, which can be found in many garages and along the road. The main reason it is good to take along is because it doesn’t spoil easily and because it’s cheap. You can package this roasted plantain in your bag or a nylon bag. Depending on the size, roasted plantains go from 150.00 naira to 500.00 naira. Moreover, to enjoy this food, you can buy some wraps of groundnut or coconut. It doesn’t spoil easily, and neither does it smell. A boli of about 700 naira can fill your stomach for more than 15 hours. 8. Fried Yam Another edible food you can take along while on a journey is fried yam. Different names are given to this food. In Lagos, it is called ‘Isu din-din’ and can be found in many car parks. It’s a very sweet food that you can consider carrying along on your journey. Many people sell this yam with pepper stew. If you are traveling across the country, you can consider eating this food without the pepper. The reason is that the pepper might cause your stomach to turn, and you might want to use the toilet. Just get about 500–800 naira of fried yam, and you are good to go. 9. Boiled or Roasted Corn Corn is also another popular staple you can take along while on a journey. You can choose to buy roasted or boiled corn, depending on your needs. They cost the same price and are both nutritious. The advantage roasted corn has over boiled is that it lasts longer. If you buy 700 naira of corn, keep it inside the nylon, and it will serve you till you reach your journey. Get a bottle of water along to take down the corn. It’s one of the cheapest foods to take along on the journey. 10. Snacks One of the foods you should consider taking while on a journey is snacks. There are different types of snacks to consider when traveling. You could get: Puff Puff Egg Roll Chin Chin Samosa Meat Pie However, if you are buying these snacks, ensure they are fresh from the kitchen. This is because they have a low shelf life. Some of these snacks will go bad within 12 hours. Conclusion With the above 10 foods to take along while on a journey, you are covered. You will notice that I didn’t mention home-made meals such as rice, beans, moin-moin, and akara. This is because they are high-fiber diets and legumes. These meals might cause bowel disturbances during your journey. Taking light meals and refreshments is your best bet while on a journey. https://flusio.com/the-10-foods-to-take-along-while-on-a-journey/ |
