In a post shared on his Instagram page, Reno decried the rate at which many Nigerian parents are giving their children English names. He opined that the Yoruba ethnic group have however stuck to giving their children local names. ”In England and America, you meet Western-born children of Western-born children of Yoruba parents, and they all have Yoruba names and can speak Yoruba. No exaggeration. Now, understand me. I am referring to children born to parents who were themselves born and raised abroad. These are third-generation immigrants. And they still speak Yoruba. Meanwhile, right there in Nigeria, many people can’t speak their native language, and God forbid that they bear their native names. Since you were born, how many Yoruba have you seen bearing Victor Moses or Joy James? But that is now the in thing in Southern Nigeria. You go to expensive private schools in Lagos and Abuja, and sadly, other than children of Yoruba parents, almost all the other children tend to bear European, Arabic or Hebrew names. Liam, Xavier, Aleona, Dwayne, Isabelle, Roberto. And when you see these children, you feel so sorry for them. Their parents do everything possible to de-Nigerianise them. Their hair, their dress, and sadly, even their skin. Oh yes. They now bleach children. I mean, how can you sit down and be in your right mind and then name your child Victor Moses? What a spectacular lack of imagination! Other than Yoruba, I am unsure how many Southern Nigerian languages will still be spoken in fifty years. In Nigeria and abroad, you have university professors of the Yoruba language. Professor Wande Abimbola, the former vice chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, is the first of many. He is not a professor of anything EXCEPT Yoruba. Yes. He read first degree, Masters and PhD in Yoruba and there are others like him! Let me ask you this question. How many professors of other Southern Nigerian languages have you heard about or seen? Learn from the Yoruba. Go to Peckham in London, and you will hear very serious Yoruba. If you are a JJC, you will think these are local Nigerians who just arrived in England. Try to speak English with them. But what Reno is saying is true regardless of his character and integrity which I sometimes question. There is this self loathing among black people which is a result of colonial mentality and loss of individual identity. Every unaware black man wants to walk, talk, eat, and dress like an European. We name our kids after them, abandon our spirituality and individuality for their religion, bleach our skins to look more white and soak our hairs in harmful chemicals to conform to European or western standards. I find this a norm to an extent within the Niger Delta 😁. At first, when I heard Tompolo's first name was 'Government', I dismissed it as a nickname when he got fame. But when I served on a Delta Island, Omo.. With surnames like Lucky, John, Stephen (their fathers' names), the children still bear stranger names like Courage or Federal, and a dizzying array of the more familiar foreign first names 😁 Imagine using such to troll a child; that's disgusting. This man is making a very big mistake. He has already lost his mind and psychological composure (that's the unfortunate fact) due to the barrage of cyber attacks obidients launched at him during the last elections (I never supported that though). If he truly wants to lecture his followers without tribal leanings, why should Yorubas be the only people he's always praising using different tactics?? Why not take some good sides of the Igbos too and write on that from time to time?? |

For me, the WORST is Parents who give their Children Natives Names such as Chinelo, Temitope, Osamudiamen, Ochuko, Iniobong, etc BUT don't teach them how to speak their native language.  When the Child tells his/her name to Pple of same Language, They start speaking the Language to the Child and CONFUSION/EMBARRASSMENT sets in.  1 Like |

Isobug:okay let me educate a bit about my tribe. First of, am Emmanuel Orlunda an from rumuolumeni in obio/akpor LGA, my mom is from omagwa in ikwerre LGA. First of the name IKWERRE is derived from my dialect akwerulem meaning (we agree) When the white first came to ikwerre land, they brought some good in exchange of slave and other nature resources. So when the interpreter Will explain to my fathers what the whites has said, they replied akwerulem meaning we agree. So that's where the name as a tribe derived from that word, to the ikwerres in similarities of the word of akwerulem. HOUSING almost all houses in Nigeria is almost the same from mud houses to the modern houses of today. So that doesn't make sense to include. GRANDPARENTS , so If an hausa man marries an igbo lady, does that make the hausa people igbos? This one too you mention don't make sense PROXIMITY DRESSING, my traditional dressing is etibo and George wrapper same with the ijaws, we don't share the same dress sense. Rivers state as a general that's our traditional dress, do you people wear etibo? Or are you going to call the kalabari's, the ogonis, the ahoada people of Rivers state igbo too?
