Giving Up On Front End Development - 2024 Is Not Smiling by refsilva: 6:37pm On Jan 03
I am a Frontend Developer .. let me call myself intermediate; however, i haven't had any full-time role before. The only thing I have done is an internship, and throughout the internship, I was able to get some on the job training.

The journey hasn't been easy so far.. Looking back at everything i have invested well close to 500k on this web dev stuff, yet i haven't gotten a job yet

To me it seems like this tech of a thing is just another Gold rush that seem to go nowhere. The stuff is to me more like luck, and i am getting tired of the whole thing all together

You will see guys posting tech as a pathway to wealth, but is it really...

I was doing marketing jejely before jumping into Tech.. Now i'm soo soo jobless
I have submitted countless applications, yet no evidence.. Most won't even reply, and some will respectfully send a rejection.

I don't know if i should pivot to another thing or give up altogether... Cause this stuff isn't bringing money, and someone has to sort out oneself else one will end up marrying at 35..

What do you guys think about this? Are you earning any money off front-end... Please be realistic...

If you are, How do you do it, If you aren't, how are you juggling expenses?

Well, first thing is self realization and I really appreciate the fact that you have call yourself to reality.

I would advise you get on something that would put money in pocket more often so that if Front End Dev is still a passion, you can run it on the side but not as a major source of income.

If you wanna reach out, just email me.

How old are you ?
When did you start learning programing ?
How long have been doing internship ?
How many projects do you have on github. (Share github account).
Do you have a person you call a mentor?
Where do you apply for jobs ?
How do you network with other developers tech events, WhatsApp groups maybe workplace?
Let me see you LinkedIn account and cv ?
How often to do you code daily?
Put your financial investment aside, is it something you love to do ? If yes, don't give up on your dreams!

Your portfolio is beautiful. I will advise you find a specific niche and learn It deep down. Look at things like Salesforce marketing cloud, servicenow, splunk or sap. There's much more. It will still be harder to get a job from Nigeria with any of this but your odds are better than with just frontend and the knowledge applies to them

Front end is saturated just like web design especially in js and it's shitty frame works

You can do PHP and specialise in WP

Every one can do it even my 8 years sister can do perfectly build a website and deploy it on nginx

Specialise in something like backend or database admin or perhaps PHP

Your website sucks tbh

It takes time to load all those shitty components , I had to disable js for it to run properly

Your projects are just clones of what you watched on YouTube, any mf indian or Mohamed can do what you did even better

Deploy real life projects for people
Start with yuur church, family members that need a website etc.

Use PHP next time and try to stand out from other web devs by making your portfolio unique

Imagine if nairaland was running on js , do you think much people will be here

Sometimes I wish Nairaland has a downvote button just like Reddit. Atleast we would have downvoted this comment to oblivion.

What's special or terrible about marrying at 35? Those of us older than that should do what, sir? I don't pray you have to wait until then, though. smiley

Don't give up yet, if you have passion for what you do. It will eventually pay off in that case. Just keep seeing or learning what you can do to try and improve your opportunities.

You wrote that you're into marketing previously. Why not consider continuing to do that, at least on a part-time basis, for some earnings to take care of your expenses in the meantime. If that's not digital marketing, you may also explore that.

Without the insults, he has a point, today's learning is too bootcamp oriented vs actual product building

You nailed it. I like your contribution. Tech over hyped on Twitter you will see everyone campaigning for tech up and down without telling people the harsh truth behind it. Painting it as quick road to success

I'm thinking of picking java as a starter because I want to focus on web app and software backends. Is this a good idea?

Use your tongue to count your teeth. If your passion isn't putting food on your table make it a hobby then.

You used to be a Wordpress expert specialist, why did you switch to salesforce?
And also would you still recommend learning Wordpress development or should I begin with trailhead salesforce learning Sir.

Just do anything you want and pray hard. There's no sure skill to learn so long as your location is Nigeria. Make I no lie give you.

I appreciate the response, my location fit change soon if things go as planned. Oya give me advice on which one to chose and also tell me why you switched away from Wordpress development

refsilva, you're yet to answer this question. Answer so we can better understand your situation. Generally, it takes 1 - 2 years to be job-ready if you're consistent and committed to learning. If I were you, I would not give up.

Anyone can be a marketer. I can train one in 1 week. But a software developer takes months/years of training to become one. Thus, software developers are more indispensable, and the field pays more. It makes more sense to pursue a career that makes you indispensable. As it's said, if you want an easier life, solve harder problems. Software development is a hard problem; stick with it so in the long run you can live a more comfortable easier life".

By the way, start learning backend and work towards becoming full-stack. It would increase your hireability in this brutal market.

Also know that people spend 2-4 years (or more) in school abroad to become nurses or fit into careers that guarantee them for life. You cant spend only 6 months in tech and start crying that you want to quit.

Like i heard said somewhere: Tech is not a "get rich quick scheme", it's a "get upper-middle class slow scheme" rather.
