As a Nigerian farmer we need to embrace smart way of farming on small space to improve our crop yield .Let's use oil palm tree as a case study .

If you can take your time to plant 10 oil palm tree on a plot of farmland,provided the seeds are improved hybrid tenera or Supergene and you are able to adopt a good fertilization programme for the next 3 to 5 years ,your average oil yield expectation should be between 250 to 300 litres of fresh palm oil per plot .this is excluding palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake derivative from processing the fruits .Adapalm plantation ,JB oil palm plantation and okomu are one of the few commercial oil palm farms in Nigeria with their plantation producing more than 1800 litres per acre annually ,this is due to the superior seeds they planted and the age of their palm trees .what is stopping you from embarking on this journey with your 1 or 2 acres lying idle in the village ?

An acre of land is between 6 to 8 plots depending on the area you farmland is located .if 10 mature oil palm trees can give you 300 litres of oil, that means on an acre where you can plant minimum of 60 plants and maximum of 70 plants your palm oil yield expectation should be between 1,800 litres to 2400 litres per acre and if sold at the rate of 1000 naira current price per litre then your revenue after sales would be 1.8million to 2.4million from an acre .In countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and other Asian countries where they plant superior hybrid oil palm trees like SUPERGENE specie in Malaysia and YANGAMBI specie in Indonesia ,their average oil palm yield is between 5000 to 6000 litres .We do not mention other product that comes with processing oil palm such as palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake which is used as animal feeds.If this countries are creating jobs and adding value to their lives through oil palm farming why can't achieve the same in Nigeria where they pick their first tenera seed from in the 1960th ?


As interesting the above analysis may sound oil palm farming is not for an inpatient farmer and it is not a get rich quick farming scheme .We are talking about a business that you will work and invest money for 3 years without generating any income but once it get to stage of oil production within the 3rd and 4th year it will reward you in multiple folds with valuable products such as palm oil ,palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake which products demand is more than the supply and the trend Wil continue in the next 3 to 4 years if you decide to set up your own oil palm plantation .this product when processed you can continue to make returns on your investment for next 20 to 30 years .You really do not need to own 20 acres or 30 acres ,it takes just an acre of well managed oil palm tree to generate more than a million worth of oil products associate with oil palm tree .

Specie of oil palm tree you planted

Your level of fertilization which is key to a productive oil palm tree .

Regular weeding .
