Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, has declared that master’s degree is the minimum academic qualification for anyone wishing to teach in the state’s secondary schools.

The governor disclosed the plans by his government for the education sector during a dinner with journalists in Jalingo on January 7.

According to him, the minimum academic qualification for teachers in primary school will be a university first degree, stressing that the current era when the National Certificate of Education, NCE, is the minimum academic qualification for primary school teachers will soon be over.

He noted that the study of History as a subject would be reintroduced in the basic education curriculum starting from primary schools in the state.

Kefas said; “We are going to reintroduce History studies in our primary and secondary schools in the state to lay a solid foundation for accelerated development.

“In no distant time, primary school teachers in the state must be first degree holders while secondary school teachers must have a minimum of master’s degree to enhance the state’s education quality.

“This is the main reason we have slashed the school fees for undergraduates in the state university. We must secure a good future for our children. Our free education policy is not a joke and anybody who stands on the way to achieving this will be crushed.”

The governor called on journalists to monitor the implementation of the state government’s free education policy in primary and secondary schools to ensure that all the school administrators were doing the right thing.

While O'levels and fake certificates are enough for politicians to contest and occupy any office in the land.

If you can't reward the teachers with juicy salary packages with their present certificates, what's the motivation for them to seek higher qualifications?

More importantly, will you pay them appropriately...I wonder who cursed nigeria with all manner of shallow thinkers, across party lines...all dumb leaders. Focus should be on training the people you employ to be teachers not, the degree they carry.

😂😂, it is very obvious this dude knows nothing, even developed nations don't even have this requirement, and having a master's degree does not even equate to being a good teacher, it takes a special training and skill set to become a good teacher, how much is he going to pay a master's degree holder to come and be a secondary school teacher?

I agree with that of primary schools. People who couldn't score high in jamb to go to the University will resort to College of education and they'll now be the ones teaching primary school kids. It doesn't make sense.

The quality of education is on decline in Nigeria. If there is no urgent reform our university graduates won't compete at a global scale.

Nonsense. Another studpid govt policy in that taraba state. The governor spoke from deep ignorance...

1. Secondary (high) school teachers do not need masters at all. That is a global standard.

2. Masters is a path to professionalism in research. That is absolutely not needed for a teacher at high school level to do his/er job effectively.

3. Taraba is a northern state. I hope the call will retain up to 10 teachers in the school if this is to take immediate effect.

4. In the even the current teachers are allowed to go for masters, who will sponsor/fund the programs? Do the governor expect this teachers to pay for these expensive programs from the monthly stipends that is yet to adequately cater for them and their families?

5. While they are up to this irrelevant programs who will take care of the deficits in manpower in the schools?

6. Dose he also plan to create new ranks for the masters degree holders teaching at the high school level?

At the end, the catchment universities will only make more money, while the masters degree will impact little or no teaching expertise to the teachers. Some of the teachers may even get burnt out due to the stress of the program, and return to the classroom worse!
