Hehe, right. Honestly just learning the difference now. I've often head the "shrimps" or "prawns" being thrown around maybe in a few conversations. But if you're hoping to get it at a market, you want to look for it using its generally adopted name

"Small crayfish" || "big crayfish"

I guess it's just one of those things with our Naija English that just got lot in translation and remained a defacto name due to popularity.

Interesting thread

The proper and right name for crayfish is Krill fish.
Surprised nobody mentioned krill fish which is the actual name for the crayfish we know.

I fact the name cray fish was coined from the real name krill fish by we Nigerians.

wrong. We don't eat krill fish in Nigeria. Besides they are extremely small. They are better suited for feeding fishes. Look at the image below have you ever seen crayfish this small being sold in Nigeria? That is an adult krill fish and look how tiny it is

I think it has to do with the way pidgin English tends to try to simplify the English language so brand names or "interesting" names get used for all things of that type. For instance, all types of diapers are called 'Pampers', all seasoning cubes are 'Maggi', all satchet water is 'pure water'. Similarly all dried little crustaceans are 'crayfish'. I think it makes conversations on that level simpler by just conveying a general idea without going into details. If you say dat man dey wear Pampers, the idea you are conveying is the man wears diapers without being specific on what brand of diaper. Crayfish just captures the entire type too without going into specifics. No doubt ignorance plays into it since most people don't care to know the difference, in fact to most people they are as good as being the same.

yeah, I understand this. That is why I am asking, "if we don't eat crayfish (it is not popular in Nigeria) why do we call all these crustaceans crayfish? "

British or Scottish influence I am guessing. Probably when the colonialists were here they spoke of crayfish, likened them to the little crustaceans found here and the name caught on. Crayfish flows much better than shrimp or prawn in pidgin though. I don put crayfish inside di soup compared to I don put shrimp inside di soup, don't sound the same. LoLz.

In an area I visited some years back, the locals there had much of that (the main 'red' crayfish) in plenty, they mainly got it from forest water bodies that comes in seasons.
