The Sigma Club of the University of Ibadan is set to organise the maiden edition of the Roseline Etuokwu Sigma National Secondary School Quiz Competition.

The Sigma Chief, said the quiz competition is one of the philanthropic initiatives of the club designed to inspire secondary school students and to provide guidance on how they can thrive as higher education students.

The Sigma Chief stated that the quiz competition was inaugurated in 2021. He added that in 2021, the competition was only held in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State; in 2022, it was held only in Oyo State; and in 2023, it was held only in the six South West states of Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti.

The Sigma Chief said that, for the 2024 edition of the quiz competition, which will be national, they are expecting over 20,000 students from about 6,000 secondary schools across the 36 states of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“To be fair and to accommodate every student, irrespective of their school or subject areas, the subjects we will be focusing on are English Language, mathematics, and general knowledge.

“Also, the quiz competition will be executed through the computer-based-test (CBT) mode; that is, it is going to be done through the computer. This is because, in this age and era, we want to encourage students and schools to embrace computer and ICT technologies,” he said.

He further said the competition will be divided into three stages – state, regional, and national stages. He added that a total of N8,900,000 has been budgeted for the cash prizes to be won; that each state winner goes home with N100,000; each regional winner, with N250,000; and the national winner, N1,000,000.

The planning committee chairman of the quiz competition, Goke Olaoluwa, stressed the criteria for the competition.

He said there is no registration fee for the competition, that all interested schools are required to register through their online registration portal, and that each participating school will provide two students, a male and a female unless the school is a boys-only or a girls-only school.

Olaoluwa noted that, before the online registration commences – which will last for a minimum of three weeks – they will send official communications to the Ministry of Education, the Association of Proprietors of Secondary Schools, the media, and other relevant stakeholders in the basic education sector in the country.

He said though there are no specific dates for the state and regional competitions yet, the national stage of the competition will be held on May 27, 2024, in commemoration of Children’s Day. He added that this day was chosen to celebrate children while inspiring and developing them through education,

Speaking about logistics, he assured that transportation, accommodation, and feeding for the students and their teachers will be covered by the organisers of the competition.

Sigma Chief, on behalf of the Sigma Club, expressed his gratitude to Old Sigmite Victor Etuokwu, founder of the RAMS Charity Foundation, for supporting the quiz competition and for sharing in the club’s vision of fostering quality education at the grassroots.
