Is paying bills not what our salary here does too? Why do a job if they aren't bills to be paid??
Doesn't matter how you want to look at it, the average worker in Canada is certainly better off to the one in Nigeria, no need to promote a fallacy just cause you want to be pro-Naija. Hope you know some of them get tax refunds?

Earning a Salary should give you more than just paying rents and co, it should also give you money to enjoy life.

Please share how a minimum wager that earns 30k (is that the new minimum wage now) can rent a single room in Nigeria.

A student who works 20 hours/week in Canada let's say 20 cad per hr (new rate) can earn up to
1200 CAD less tax. He or she pays 550 CAD for a single room in a shared flat inclusive of 24hrs power (uses power for cooking), Data and heat. He has 650 CAD extra to manage his life of which he can save like 300 to 400 CAD if he lives low-key.

Tell us how a Nigerian earning 30k can match the above soft life? How much can a minimum wage earner save after paying his month bills.

We are not even talking about Canada's access to food bank, good roads, security, health care etc.

Una dey promote 9ja with sufferness.

Those earning minimum wage won't be talking about renting what is being discussed here be it in Nigeria or anywhere else.

There is no where in the world those earning minimum wage are comfortable, none whatsoever, hence the reason their government often time provide welfare for those within such bracket.

And pls, quit this student stuff you keep talking about. (Funny he even said students earn 1200 after tax and even said they earn 20/hr) highest is $16 CAD as general minimum wage which is to come to effect in April 2024.

This thread is not about student. Students should not even be working in the first place.

Talk about families and rent.

That's if you're paying your bills with it in Nigeria.

Why do you think we enjoy life better than Canadians?

This is relative

Someone earning ₦1m in Nigeria is likely to enjoy life better than someone earning 3k CAD in Canada but I can't really quantify or compare enjoyment.

Like I said, it's relative.

If you actually have money in Nigeria, you're going to be balling!

Those not earning below ₦1m in Nigeria knows how far.

Enough said.

Most Nigerians are numerate illiterates. I was like that due to a poor math foundation, but continous improvement by reading and understanding various economic metrics changed my thought process.

We have a poor way at looking at numbers in Nigeria due to how poorly taught mathematics is done in the country.

It is not about mathematics but the emotional way of looking at issues like this, is the major contention here.

Your contribution is true.

One can build a duplex for that amount in just 3years but they can't build such a house in Canada except through 20 to 30years mortgage.

The truth is,if u have money here in Nigeria,u will go a long way in life.

Saving ₦400k monthly from a ₦1m salary should get you a bungalow within 3 years (excluding land).

Saving 1k CAD (Not even possible) from your less than 2k3 CAD (After tax/vat) can't even get you a one bed house in 3 years anywhere in Canada.

Should we blame the landlords?

Hell no!!! You can't blame them when cost of building materials is steadily increasing...

Reminds me of 2022 when I paraded some yahoo boys who were looking for a 2-bed room apartment....We finally got to find one and the landlord pinned the house rent down to #850k yearly.....I almost OFF that moment......Money wey dem take buy keke carry give me as higher purchase nai these boys wan splash throway just like that, that was the thought that was running in my mind cheesy. The landlord was even saying his own was the cheapest in the area angry. Like WTF....... Y'all need to see the kind bad eye wey I take look am like say na me get the money cheesy

Omoh,I like where I dey right now abeg......Very cheap, peaceful, water dey, well tiled and pvc ceiling grin. And most importantly, fine bannies come still surround me join as a bonus tongue

Cost of building materials is not really the cause, most of this landlord build their houses 10 to 8 years ago and are still increasing rent to the current rate landlords with new houses are charging, which is very bad. And most of the times the house is not in good shape.

Am a real estate agent, sometimes I do quarrel with this landlords because of this issue. To me it's pure wickedness.

A lot of people are really dumb and I don't think their brain is functioning at optimal.

We are complaining about rent in Nigeria and you are talking about Europe, do you want to compare minimum wage Purchasing power ? In Nigeria minimum wage is 30k. Compare that with the price of drivers licence or international passport or even fine. Half bag of rice is how much again ?? Add cost of transportation. In UK how much do they earn per hour In USA how much do they earn per hour?? In Canada how much do they earn per hour ?? I'm very sure three hours of work is more than 30k if you convert that in Naira.

Na God go punish you if you compare Nigeria with Europe again.

A landlord that built is how far back as 15years ago is putting his house for rent at an exorbitant price because of building materials is expensive, how is he affected by that ??

To all you idiots saying you stay in Canada and we should thank God because houses are cheaper in Nigeria, what is stopping you from coming back to Nigeria ?? Abi you won make I pray for you so them go deport you ?? Stu*** c*unt*

the are not talking if people life in Nigeria is safe,u can imagine de level of insecurity going on,u can be kidnapped in next min, just becos one ply de road y travelling, dem de kidnapped fr Canada or u.k or u.s,even if ur money will go in rent or bills over there make ur life dey, please liv dis country, don't mind them saying de are paying 40million dollar in rent ,yet can com bck in nigeria

So again I am telling you this to prove to you that the problem is more system than the landlords we say that have raised the cost of houses. Govt need to create a more viable economic environment and a working wage structure not the death minimum wage we have. They also need to regulate the activities of House Agents to ensure they are not sabotaging end users (tenants).

If you dont agree it is either because you are a promoter of the fraud govt.

so again If student with limited hours can earn that much talk more of families with full time work.

For your Information, Canada has raised minimum wage earning to 20 Cad per hour. Some province like Ontario earn more.

My point you have missed so far remains:

Newly built houses can use inflation and cost of building materials as reason for the exhorbitant rent they're collecting but not old houses with no modem facilities nor renovation.

You can't build your house 20yrs+ ago and be claiming same rent rate with newly built houses with modern amenities.

The landlords are not really to blame. It's housing agents like marida and mayorcastle that surreptitiously inflate the value of the apartments for rent. Just imagine a mini flat going for over 700,000 in run down areas like Shomolu and bariga. They are joyless and almost soulless in their pursuit for profit. Its only God that can save us.
This can only work in situations where the landlord isn't in the state or country, and hands over the property to a particular agent to manage. So if he (the landlord) pegs his 2 bedroom flat at 800k, the agent can advertise it at 1m and call the 200k service charge.

But in situations where a landlord/landlady is living on the property or living in the state that houses the property, and contracts an agent to get him/her tenant(s) the best the agent can do is to inflate the commission and not the rent. I cannot tell you that my house is 700k and you'll go and start telling people that it's 1m. I'll just cut off from you contract another serious agent.

The keys to the property is with the landlord, meaning the tenant would eventually meet with the landlord for inspection before facilitating payment. So which landlord would allow any agent make almost half of the rent of the house for doing almost nothing?

As you mention presco it brought back so much memory it reminded me of when I was serving in Abakaliki in 2019. I lived around presco then, Behind the then presco campus. As at that time a single room self contain at Democracy estate was already going for between 100k-120k... I was lucky to get the one I was staying then at God's own hostel for 80k.. Over all sha ebonyi state is cheap to live in, I stayed back for another year after NYSC before I left because there isn't much opportunities for young graduate.
If you had crossed the road and walked towards Hope Inn (before G hostel) you would have gotten one room self con for less than 60k that 2019.

Unfortunately, Democracy estate is very expensive now. You know it's close to PRESCO campus. Single room self con there starts from 200k and above.

And yes Ebonyi is relatively cheap because most of her inhabitants pratice subsistence farming. So you can easily get things like garri, rice, corn, yam, palm oil...etc at a very cheap rate from your neighbor who just returned from the farm.

The high rents currently being experienced there is as a result of inflation and high cost of building materials.
