Drivers with Primero Transport Services Limited, one of the companies operating the Lagos State Bus Rapid Transit, who embarked on a strike on Saturday over the non-payment of their December salary, have returned to work.

Our correspondent observed that the buses were also back on the road as of Monday morning when a check was carried out.

The PUNCH reports that passengers were stranded on Sunday as drivers of Primero TSL embarked on a strike over the non-payment of their December salary.

An employee of the company told our correspondent in a telephone chat that “the strike started (on Saturday). They are on strike because their December pay has not been given to them,” adding that the issue might be resolved by Monday.

The customer service department of Primero TSL, in a reply to an email of inquiry sent by The PUNCH, said on Monday that the issue that led to the strike had been resolved.

“The issue has been resolved and our buses are back on the road this morning,” the customer service department wrote.

Asked about how the issue was resolved, some of the busmen who pleaded anonymity told The PUNCH on Monday that the company was addressing the issue.

“The company has given us their word. They are addressing the issue,” one of them said.

Another busman alleged that Primero TSL was “not taking our welfare seriously. Imagine not being paid December salary; a festive season for that matter.”

Speaking with The PUNCH in a telephone interview, however, the Head, Corporate Communications, Primero TSL, Mutiu Yekeen, said the company prioritises its drivers’ welfare.

“We prioritise the welfare of our drivers. You need to understand that they are always being paid first before any other members of staff in the organisation.

“So, their salary and welfare are being prioritised. Apart from being paid their salary, they have allowances that they get. And those who perform outstandingly among the busmen, the drivers, are being given a reward monthly,” Yekeen said.

On the current issue, Yekeen said, “The issue that we have currently is beyond our control, but their salaries are being attended to as we speak.”
