You may find yourself asking "Who are the Aros?"

If so, then just kick back and let our photos speak for themselves.

Above is the picture of the three "Ezes" of Arochukwu.

Although Arochukwu is ruled by only ONE Eze, we do have three Ezes who are the representatives of the three lineages of Arochukwu. The three Ezes: are "Eze Ibom Isii" (head of the six [Akpa] villages of Arochukwu and of the Akpa lineage), Eze Agwu (head of the Agwu lineage), and Eze Nnachi (head of the Nnachi lineage). However the current Eze Aro is the "Eze Nnachi".

Isi Ojojo bu isi umunwanyi n'ebu. It is meant to represent the importance of women in culture, and during the dance, all of the women take part in singing and procession. They sing "Onyi iro hapum aka ka mpkawa nganga lewd ibem anya".

The three lineages and their villages are:

Eze Agwu:
Part of Oro
Asaga
Amoba

Amannagwu
Ugwuakuma
Amankwu
Agbagwu.

Eze Kennachi:
Utughugwu

Ugwuafor
Part of Oror.

Eze Ibom Isi: (These villages are mainly from the Akpa lineage which came from across the Cross river)

Nice. Some curious questions.

1. Aro 'Oke Igbo'; How recent is that 'Oke Igbo' qualifier? Is it post-colonial or pre-colonial?
2. Any specific reason as to why you are toggling between "odo" and "ozo"? Also, which one of the two is the one said by Arochukwu?
3. "Lekwa Kanu na nye ya"; Nye, is that an Aro word?
Re: Arochukwu (in Pictures) by odumchi: 7:40pm On Nov 06, 2011
Oke Igbo isn't a recent thing. The term was established in the 18th century after Arochukwu went from a Kingdom to a Confederacy.
I used both "ozo" and "odo" because I didn't want to keep repeating the same word. However, "odo" is our dialect.
"Nye" is also our dialect and means the same thing as "Nwuye".

Thanks for the interest.

@torch, Arochukwu is in Abia State. If you have been to Ohafia then locating Arochukwu will not be a problem. To get to Arochukwu you will pass Ohafia, Ihechiowa, Ututu then Aro. Arochukwu are very gud people with rich cultural heritage. Concerning there relationship or resemblance with ibibio, Arochukwu has common boundary with cross river and akwa ibom, and in the acient days they had business ties with them.

Very good pictures, but to more serious issues. I understand the Aro played the prominent role in spreading the slave trade in Igbo land. The wealth and land gained by the prior generations still benefit Aros to this day. Now that Aros are hopefully educated and enlightened, any plans to apologize for the roles of their priests and ancestors in the slave trade? It would really start the healing of Ndigbo.
