Honestly I don't really understand why Nigeria is finding it difficult to exit this streak of backwardness. Is it overpopulation, lack of resources or just ineptitude of our leaders.

For me, I was thinking it wouldn't be hard to generate enough power to serve the country; especially after considering how much the government spends on generators to power up different agencies. Most times we borrow money as a country to supply generators and listers to power up the government agencies and projects. Can't the borrowed money be invested in power generation which is cheaper, cleaner and could also generate more revenue for the government.

Why can't we have a working refinery owned by the government. I understand crude oil has global price tag but the cost of shipping out crude and refined product back for local consumption could be channeled into something beneficial for the country.

We are eating up our animal hides here while other countries are tanning theirs and selling back to us as heathers. Some of these countries buy this hides from our local markets here.

We have a very expanse of uncultivated land yet we depend so much on importation of food.

Is national security that difficult to achieve?

What about setting up a plastic and ceramic recycling plants, it will clean up our environment and generate money at the same time.

What about establishing a textile industries?
Over 200M market is such a good place for textile industry to thrive.

I actually think turning the economy of Nigerian around is not a rocket science because I know so many areas our government is not doing well

What's your opinion?

We are blacks and the black man is cursed. There's no single black nation on earth doing well but you see Nigerians are a special type of cursed. If blacks are cursed, Nigerians are quadrupled cursed creatures.

Even if a derica of rice is N50,000 in 2027, trust that many from the president's tribe would still vote for him. The black race is cursed. I now believe the white colonialists that said the black man is incapable of self governance.

If i find myself anywhere close to power in Nigeria, I would fight to ensure that poor people and illiterates never vote again in Nigeria.

Are we the only black country on this earth? there's 24/7 of power in Ghana, Togo, Benin, Ivory-coast and many others

Exactly that's why I say our own curse is special grade. What happens in Nigeria doesn't even happen in countries poorer than Nigeria like Liberia or Burundi.

I laugh when I hear Nigerians complain that Nigeria isn't working. What did they expect? How will it work?

You call your self "federal Republic", yet there is nothing federal about you. You don't even have a constitution agreed to by the people.

You run a unitary system where a President and 36 State Governors have been given more powers than God to do and undo. Why will anything work? It's not in the interest of those in power for things to work

The only way Nigeria could have worked is if it had practiced true federalism, a system where the constituent parts are controlling their resources, and managing their own lands, semi independent of the Federal government

In other words, everyone is responsible for their own development.

The current system only allows "chop clean mouth every 4 years"

You have no constitution, you have the wrong system of government, you can't conduct internationally credible elections, you have no unity of purpose. How will things ever work?

The problem of Nigeria is in the foundation, it will never work

Nigeria wasn't designed to work.

We have already experimented this nonsense for over 100 years without tangible results.

I hope we realise soon enough that this country isn't meant to work as one unit.

We should go back to regionalism and federalism our founding fathers demanded for before gaining independence.

Let each region be responsible for her security and economy..it will stop unnecessary mutual suspicion !

Gerrard59:

Culture and ethnic/racial demographics play major roles in nation-building and cohesion. The vast majority of cultures in Nigeria are not pragmatic, egalitarian, enterprising, hard-working and promote integrity. Additionally, Nigeria has too many ethnic groups, creating a divisive society full of mistrust, disharmony and disunity. Looking at examples globally, the most successful/prosperous societies are those where the dominant ethnic/racial group promotes pragmatism, egalitarianism, entrepreneurship, hard work and integrity. In return, the most homogenous out of them tend to be the most successful, peaceful and safest as this homogeneity endears trust, peace and harmony. Examples abound globally and within Africa. So, if you expect component parts of Nigeria to be prosperous, you know what should be done.

Nigeria is a nation set against itself deliberately to fail. The people are as dogmatically and resistively different as any set of people can be on Earth.

Can the average Brit live and make progress, as they know it to be ,under Taliban rule if both are forced to share geographical space? Not possible yet that is what Nigerians, specially those with progressive and developmental mentality and temperament, are forced to live under.

Leaders deliberately pretend to not see these massive differences to then insist we all live under ‘one Nigeria’ that facilitates their centrist looting of our commonwealth and provides a system within which accountability and administrative checks-and-balances is virtually hopeless.

We the ordinary Nigerians, though power resides with us, further self-sabotage by refusing to rise up and say with one voice that we want the end of ‘one Nigeria’ today at least to try another governance system.

‘One Nigeria’ has endured since the military incursion into our politics and the unification decree of Aguyi Ironsi.

If Nigerians are not hopeless sufferheads, should it not be obvious to us all that “insanity is doing things the same way over and over again to expect a different outcome”?

We are going nowhere, not even under Jesus Christ or Mother Theresa, if we don’t kill .one Nigeria’ so that administrative regional autonomy can be born.

Quite well said.

The only thing to add is the need for strong institutions. Not enough attention is being paid to this. Without strong institutions, state governors will become the new tyrants. We can all see how state governors have successfully destroyed local government in Nigeria and we need to learn from this.

This question is not necessary. Elections are over and people should wait till next election to answer this question.
Nigerians had the opportunity to elect someone who was ready to be accountable to the masses but rather a lot of people prefer guy man kind of leadership.
