Coding sucks

Last time I did coding was over 20 years ago.
Used Visual Basic to write a 3D software.
Then about 2 years ago, I wanted to use C++ to rewrite the code.
But after a few days, I just asked myself, "who send me message?"
Na there I off computer.

Congratulations

post=128226580]I graduated from the University 12 years ago. Since then I have been jumping from one job to another with no progress in sight. I discovered that I have been stagnant for Years, so I decided to learn a skill.

I started by learning how to make footwear, I learnt that for a year but I later discovered that it's not what I want to do, although I can make every type of footwear even boots.
Last year I took an online course in frontend web development, for 6 months I studied for an average of more than10 hours daily learning from HTML and now React.js. I learnt figma, scss, CSS, Version control, jquery, bootstrap, Chakra UI and react.js, it was a tough one because I had to forfeit other means of making money. I got hungry so many times, I used my last card to buy data so I can keep studying and doing my projects.

Earlier this month, I finished by portfolio project, I had already worked on 4 projects using react, Jquery, Chakra UI and bootstrap. I designed coupled of web pages using figma.

Earlier this month, my girlfriend who's a data analyst sent me a link for a front-end developer role. In my mind, I didn't feel like I was ripe enough so I didn't apply. 2 days later, I decided to give it a try and so I applied. I was called to come for interview this Monday.

On getting there, the company was working on this revenue web app project they are doing to for a particular state government. I was asked to develop the UI of one of the pages using react, CSS and Tailwind. I have heard of Tailwind before but I have never used it.
I told the interviewer that I have never used tailwind and that I'm proficient using bootstrap. He replied that I should go through tailwind documentation and then use it to style the page on top of react.

So I started reading the documentation, I discovered that it's syntax is somehow similar to Chakra UI which I have used once in my project, the are the same concept of class utility. So I decided to start coding, getting snippets from the documentation and then applying my Chakra UI knowledge to work around it.

To cut the long story short, I coded from 9am in the morning and delivered the page by 5pm.

I was sent an appointment letter today. So my tech journey officially started. It's a junior role though but I'm glad I broke the ice.

The salary is what I have never earned in a month since I was born. 😊[/quote]

Most cs graduates Dont have a skill in what is currently in demand in the job market . Doctor is the name but you have all types surgeons, gynaecologists, etc

Computer is the name but there are so many things you can do with a computer and areas of specialisation

Front end development
Back end development
Machine learning
Data science
Dev oops
Cyber security

All serious computer science graduates must be able to try and forge a speculation in these currently hot in demand fields before he or she graduates from school

There a millions of job career opportunities in these fields at the moment cos of how computerised and digitalised almost everything is becoming.

There is an app for almost everything now these days for instance and almost everything is going digital

At least a good Computer Science degree covers front-end, server side programming languages, databases, etc and will give you the skills and knowledge you need to learn any programming skills quickly. Computer Science is not like Medicine.

Getting a good front-end or programming job involves some connections. No one will come here and tell you what took place behind the screen.

Are you from a science background?

Does coding involve a lot of maths? Complex maths?

Coding is lucrative but sadly not for everyone.

It is a technical craft.

You are not meant to be brilliant, you only need to be extremely logical.

It is not heavy on mathematics at all, you only need to reason in a deeply logical manner.

Coding is hard. You need to learn a lot of things. Syntax is the least part,

If you know you have passion for it, welcome into the ABSTRACT world!

You do not need any connection to get a technical job.

You are required to solve real life scenario problem - I mean, you bring a real world problem into an abstract world! in a very logical manner.

For instance, you are to make a real car move. Your code will create a virtual car within its domain. A car that cannot be seen or touched, and u will virtually create other components that make up the car. Then, you enable the car to do anything you wish - like flying, moving etc. This software will then give real car the capabilities. I repeat, it is a craft.

No one will employ you into this field if you do not understand what is going on under the hood.

All the jobs I have got in my life, I never had any connection, be it abroad or in Nigeria.

It is a suicide mission for anyone to feel he can come into coding world without being technical. Trust me, he wont last a day on the job.

Minimum requirement for a programming job should be a degree in a programming related field. When it comes to technical front-end or back-end stuff in tech, programming related degree holders are the ones that can handle it better. Everywhere I have worked in programming, what I find is that self-taught guys who have been in the role for ages know very little and cannot handle complex challenging problems in programming and that's the only reason I can get into such jobs as I'm able to use the problem solving skills I gained from my CS degree to solve the complex issues for them.

Cs graduates are not front end developers

You dwleve into programming on its own either whilst you are at university or after you graduate. It helps knowing the tricks and cmd shortcuts of how a computer works

In other words the syllabus in a computer science university does not teach you how to for instance build an app from scratch with a notepad from beginning to the end user

You don’t need connections to get a front end developer job. It’s either you know it or you don’t

It’s either you can code in JavaScript or you can’t

Maybe govt jobs you need connections

If you are a very very good computer software programmer you will get jobs like water

And how many have you explained the power of a data analyst and they still refuses to hire one.

It's pointless whining that someone doesn't understand something when you know that no one has EVER informed them about that thing

chinasaekpere:
it's a nice one but note that many Nigerian companies seen not to yet appreciate or are yet to see a reason why they should hire a data analyst. They usually depend on the traditional way of analyzing data or cannot afford to pay a data analyst.

Go and take a degree in computer science and you'll be more enlightened. Truth is that if you are not connected as a self-taught person you will not be able to find a programming job.
Those providing programing trainning courses for self-taught without a degree in CS/programing related filed are just using this to cash in with a thread like this one.

It is what it is bro

Niaraland is originally from Simple Machine Forum (SMF) and was not built from scratch, you just download and use it, I have known Nairaland from when the front-end was still the one from SMF and after it was replaced with Python there is an issue which have not been fixed yet, like when you post some characters in the programing section it turns it to an emoji. If this issue was in a proper company's application and their clients are complaining they will have to get a CS grad in to fix it for them.

If a team of good CS grads should build a forum like this from scratch then it will be touch notch.

Truth is that getting a job as a self-taught person is who you know.

Well done bro. Cheers

chinasaekpere:
I graduated from the University 12 years ago.
