I just listened to Water by Tyla. Not because I'm a Nigerian, Its a nice song but there's nothing spectacular about it. Rush by Arya Starr still better than it.

This is my take on the Grammy Award African category
1. None of the nominees really produces AFRICAN MUSIC. They are producing commercial music. and their nominations are influenced by AMERICAN RECORD LABELS. Was there any nominee not connected to an American label. Increasingly we are being made to accept that kind of music which is sweet to American ears as the best. There is nothing wrong with winning any award but we must be awake to the influence of. Money and how that dictates to us what we must like. Fela did not gain fame by trying to Westernize his message.
It seems to me that it is better business for the American labels to bring a new winner rather than recycle the usual Nigerian suspects. I urge our musicians to remain original and not try to please anyone

2. It is a shame and a sign of colonialism that Africans should be waiting for America to tell us the best African songs each year. We should be able to do that ourselves in an African capital
3. Even more shameful that we mill around to celebrate like fools totally oblivious to the cultural participation and our own shameless validation craving. no doubt many would have felt good if one of our own bad won but that would merely be feeding a growing addiction
4. Why can't we have our own award in Yaounde or Abidjan or Abuja
5. One final word on money. The Grammy awards in 2020 made $110 million from advertising alone. It is business.
Africa has 54 countries we should wake up . Start having our own
...

point of correction her name is norah Jones .she won three Grammies or so DT year.even mtv no dey play her song I think it was 2002 or 2003 .album of d year eminem.,Nelly and other big heavyweight na em we hear norah Jones MTV no dey play her song even after d award only play her song once a while
If u notice they always nominated kutis,Angelique kodjo.even when 2baba won at MTV EMA 2008
No beef to tyla .the issue is she might end up dumping amapaiano identity to more American identity like tems .
My advice is make Nigeria afrobeat use wisdom on d America validation thing.if nt dem go suck us like orange throwaway us .we go break enter but na like two years.
U notice na pple where don fad like usher ludacris dey come feature our artist easily na to light up their faded career .only Chris brown is being genuine
I think Nigeria artiste need to start looking up Asia and Latino music if we want to continue global outreach

We're all been paid that Tyla worn the category but do we know what the category really represents? BEST AFRICAN MUSIC PERFORMANCE, not best African music. How many performance of unavailable by Davido, Rush by Arya or Asake's own could beat Tyla's Water performances?

TYLA deserves that win abeg. Nigerian acts should do more in their live performances and not just hire a hype man and a DJ for their shows. They should also do more TV appearances. That'll help them for next year.

Congrats Tyla

that's not the point dear. The category is for best music performance not how sweet the song is. Arya never performed the hit song as good as Tyla performed water. Also let's not forget she always hired a dance group and live bands for her performances. Also she sang live with occasional backing vocals and not the whole song singing in the background and a hype man shouting everywhere.

Also Tyla was everywhere on TV shows performing the song. SNL, JIMMY FALLON, ETC. Those where wat was considered.
Re: Davido Congratulates Tyla As She Wins Her First Grammy Award by ifegen(m): 9:58am On Feb 06
We forget that the award was for performance, the artist with the best performance for the submitted song for the year under review. And with Rush, the song was a hit no doubt, enjoyed international and local radio play, but there's just a hand full of live performance of the song from Ayra. Unlike Water by Tyla. Her team promoted the song so well, booked her shows on many live TV shows and her dancing and live singing skills won the voters over.

Water isn't as big as any of those songs in that category, but her live shows outperformed all the songs there. Davido would be the first Runner-up for me. His performance of unavailable on Jimmy Kimmel Live show was dope too.
ElasmoBranchii:

Omo some mistakes no dey easy to overlook o. They no even nominate am talk less of him not winning. Yet his album had up to 3 songs that made no 1 on billboard.
Still from the album to the songs none was nominated.

I used to hear Eminem say that they are corrupt but I only started to realize when they snubbed the weeknd. The weeknd also said they are corrupt. I can only take them serious when the weeknd decides that they are credible and starts submitting his music to them again. Even drake is snubbing them.

For Nigerian music tho I'll just say it's the type of music their fans want to hear.
I think if Grammy wanted to give intellectual music for that category I think arya starr should have won it for her song "Rush".

Personally I don't care what criteria they used to decide. If you check my previous comments you will see the reason I said they are corrupt. Unless you can come up with a reason the weeknd wasn't nominated for the 2021 awards.

I was only replying to the guy cause he said that tyla song was more intellectual than the rest.

I believe what you said should be right thanks for the info

That's not correct. The song is bigger than the other songs in the category. You can't use your experience in Nigeria to determine that. She has more radio plays and streams.

As at last year “Water” rises from No. 2 to rule the chart after a 15% jump in plays that made it the most played song on U.S. monitored rhythmic radio stations in the week of Dec. 1–7, according to Luminate.
A top stream song on Spotify where none of the other songs are not even in the top 20. I know it's not big in Nigeria but there's no single day the song is not played on radio from late last year till date.

You're missing my point, the category was for performance... Unless the performance is referring to performance on the charts, of which I'd say it was undeserving. I guess Grammys have to tell us the criteria for awarding any song from that particular category then.

As you're aware the category is new and similar to the Best Global Music Performance. It has nothing to stage performances like you claimed. I only wanted to draw your attention to the fact that the music is bigger than the others in terms of charts. I only responded because you said it's not big and I said the charts prove otherwise. These were the numbers in Spotify before the awards. Like they say numbers don't lie. So if it's in terms of charts it was deserving.

Tyla's Water 380 M
Ayra's Rush 320 M
Davido Unavaibale 123 M
Burna's City 104 M
Asake Amapiano 50 M
Re: Davido Congratulates Tyla As She Wins Her First Grammy Award by ifegen(m): 4:39am On Feb 08
The criteria for awarding the best music performance can vary depending on the context, such as the type of award (e.g., Grammy, MTV Music Awards, local music awards), the specific category (e.g., best solo performance, best group performance, best live performance), and the preferences of the judging panel or voting audience. Generally, factors like vocal quality, stage presence, technical skill, audience engagement, and overall entertainment value play a significant role in determining the winner. However, different awards may prioritize certain aspects over others, and sometimes factors like commercial success or cultural impact may also influence the decision.

GRAMMY AWARD CEO EXPLAINS

"The Grammys do not care if you have 100 million followers or 100 million streams on your song. When songs are nominated, we have a group of professional music experts from the United States who sit and listen to every song and album. Then, we evaluate the quality and content of each and every song before unanimously voting for a winner.

The Grammys have nothing to do with the number of followers, streams, or fans an artist has. We evaluate quality and content and choose the best to win. We have been doing so for 66 years now." — Grammy Award CEO @Harvey Masson Jr. explains what it takes to win a Grammy Award.

Music Base Africa

My point is that Water deserved the win because based on performance, vocal agility and all that, she performed better than the artists nominated. It's not about the streams.
