History
Founded by the Royal Charter of the UK in 1964, Lancaster University emerged as a response to the post-World War II demand for higher education. It was among the 'glass-plate universities' proposed between 1958 and 1961. Princess Alexandra of Kent served as the inaugural chancellor until 2004. The university admitted its first cohort of students in 1964, expanding to include science students in 1965. The establishment of Bowland and Lonsdale colleges in 1964 marked the beginning of its collegiate system, with the first college building erected in 1966.
