AFCON 2024 has finally come to an end, and in the championship match versus the Nigerian Super Eagles, host Ivory Coast accomplished nothing short of a miracle.

In the Africa Cup of Nations final, Sebastian Haller's winner led Ivory Coast to a 2-1 comeback victory over Nigeria, capping up the most incredible run in the tournament's history. On their road to securing an unlikely spot in the championship game, the hosts somehow won both of their group stage matches, fired their manager, and won on penalties.

However, a scant three weeks following their crushing 4-1 loss to Equatorial Guinea, which put an end to Jean-Louis Gasset's rule and left them in danger of elimination, Ivory Coast produced yet another unforgettable evening that triggered frenzied celebrations in Abidjan. They had the better of the first forty-five minutes, but Nigeria led at halftime thanks to a header from William Troost-Ekong against the flow of play. However, the Ivory Coast players were adamant about winning; perhaps this was due to the fact that they were playing at home, but they nevertheless exerted a great deal of muscle and force to take the lead. Nigeria attempted to force extra time by attempting a late equalizer. Still, after a tournament that had provided ample drama, there was to be no more. For a third time, Ivory Coast refused to back down and raised the AFCON trophy. Both nations produced a wonderful game, and even though the Super Eagles didn't win this time, they should have been happy of themselves for reaching thus far.
