In a decisive step to address the growing concern of social vices plaguing tertiary institutions across Nigeria, The Senior Special Assistant To the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Students Engagement, Hon. Comr. Sunday Asefon (GCNS)
has announced the formation of a Special Committee on Campaign Against Social Vices in Tertiary Institutions.


Drug abuse, cultism, cybercrime, sexual harassment, and academic dishonesty among others are some of the social vices which not only hinder academic performance and personal development but also threaten the overall safety and well-being of students thereby casting a shadow over the vibrant environment of Nigerian Tertiary Institutions.


Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Hon. Sunday Asefon emphasized that the formation of the Special Committee underscores a significant commitment of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to safeguard the future of Nigerian Students and the need for a comprehensive and collaborative approach in tackling the menace of social vices in Nigeria's Tertiary institutions.


The newly formed Special Committee for the Eradication of Social Vices in Tertiary Institutions (SESV-TI), boasts a diverse membership drawn from various stakeholder, renowned educationist, students activists, patriotic leaders among others.



Major General SZ Kazaure Rtd, former Director General, National Youth Service Corps and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Nigeria Army University Biu was named the Chairman of the committee,
Comrade Maxwell SC Okoye, Secretary, while prominent figures include Prof. Amb. Jerry Ugokwe OON, A Professor of Legislative Studies and two times member of the Federal House of Representatives, former Ambassador of Nigeria to Austria, Slovakia, Nigeria's former Permanent Resident Representative to United Nations Offices in Vienna and Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).


Other renowned members include RT. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche OFR, former Deputy Speaker, Federal House of Representatives, Former Governor of Adamawa State,
His Excellency Bala James Nggilari Esq, former FCT Minister of State, Amb. Dr. Ramat Tijjani, The Archbishop of the African Church Abuja and Vice Chairman, Pentecostal Bishop Forum of Northern Nigeria, Arch Bishop Peter ogunmuyiwa, Dr. Abubakar Rimi Jnr, , Bishop Dr. Sunday Onuoha, Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu LLB, Comrade Ismail Lawanson, Comrade Tayyiba Abdulrazak and Representatives of security agencies are among the multifaceted composition ensured to have a well-rounded inclusion of crucial voices of relevant stakeholders.


The mandate of the committee is to develop and implement comprehensive awareness campaigns, educate students about the dangers of social vices and promote positive values, Collaborate with Tertiary institutions administrators to strengthen security measures and implement stricter disciplinary codes while providing support and rehabilitation services to students struggling with addiction, mental health issues, or the aftermath of victimization.


Hon. Comr. Asefon emphasised that the success of the Anti- Social Vices campaign is hinged on the continued commitment of the government, unwavering support from stakeholders, and active participation from students themselves noting that only through collective effort can a brighter future be secured for Nigeria's future generation of leaders.
