Nigeria Should Introduce Per Hour Minimum Wage by akingangan: 2:57pm On Feb 19
The best time to introduce per hour minimum wage is now.

By doing so a middle class will emerge and there will be dignity in labour

People will start working harder and smarter.

Exploitation of the likes of house help will stop instantly.

Nigeria will then catch up with the rest of the world.

Ask all the Japa people and they will tell you they are doing any work they see so far as it pays their bills.

Someone should tell this to Tinubu and Labour

A good minimum wage in line with international standards will be at least $5 per hour or 5000 Naira

We still dey!

I'm just wondering how they are going to be calculating my wage on an hourly basis.

I don hit jackpot be dat now!

Keeping me from 8am to 4pm will be at government 's disadvantage big time.

By @op's estimation that will be 40 dollars/day or 200k daily.

This one na die!

It's normal in a lot of sensible countries

Your quality of work will improve and your employer will expect more from you while respecting you.

In Nigeria it can't work. The clock timer will be set to slow such that you work 2 for 1hr, the machine will be miscalculating the due date, and sometimes even failed to recognize your Id.

This country is in a pathetic state. Deliberate acts of criminality

Imagine the productivity of teachers, doctors, nurses etc...

That is the trick these western countries are using to brain drain Nigerian trained workers who are working 7 to 7 almost half a day. That is a typical shift for doctors and nurses in UK.

A criminal penalty should attached to any worker not paying the rate.

$40 is around ₦60K, not ₦200K.

All these are futile in the land of Injustice

The Poor should not be punished for the Sins of the Rich looters
First they loot the money meant for the ,poor

Then the looted have to also suffer the hardship as a result of the looting

This is the Problem

The poor are looted and looted and looted without any Consequences to the point that looting is even attractive

This means you will have to work your ass off for every hour spent.

No room for laziness. It also means the civil servants will be downsized because many of them are unproductive.

Let me check my arithmetics.

The man said 5 dollars per hour or 5000 naira

Since I work 8 hours per day (8 to 4)

That's 5x 8 =40 dollars

Or

5000 x 8 = 40,000 naira

E be like we both failed the arithmetic o!

I used ₦1,500 per dollar to arrive at ₦60K.

I agree with you but we don't need to start base on international standard in Nigeria for now. The minimum wage per hour can be #400. But the consequence is that prices of goods and services will also shootup
Re: Nigeria Should Introduce Per Hour Minimum Wage by akingangan: 5:01pm On Feb 19
It is basically common sense.

Ok, using a private school as a scenario.

If a teacher must earn minimum wage of #5000 per hour, and parents are paying #200,000 per child.

If an employer decides minimum wage is too much and relieves people of their jobs.
Parents will remove their children and find a better quality school and the school owner loose #200,000 per child, so it will make sense for the school to pay the minimum wage or loose everything.

In a scenario where a banker has a child minder/house help and a driver. Having to pay the minimum wage with not enough for both will force the banker to choose the child minder otherwise no going to work. The driver can then find an executive driver position or go to start a business.

Farmers will have confidence farming and traders trading because the purchasing power comes from everyone including the child minder, driver, banker etc

This is the kind of economic revolution needed.

The op already gave us the yard stick.

My initial impression was that 5 dollars was = 5000.
That's how I converted the 40 dollar to 200k.

The truth be say all of us like money!
